Can we turn off seeing Commander Ship Names..?

Dude wants some choice about what his kids see in a game that's rated for children and half of you jump down his throat, I'll assume those being about it either don't have kids or don't care about how they grow up and see the world but that's no reason to have a go at a parent wanting to protect his kids from other players who think getting a rude word into a computer game is high comedy.

Well great, i can see why some of you need a ship named after male genitalia.

But the OP is concerned about looking at immature names and not about UI clutter, thus my response to the OP. There's a whole galaxy of immature names out there so I don't really get the point of this thread. Either develop a sense of humour for yourself or if young children are the concern (as the OP has stated) then simply exhibit some parental discretion when letting them watch. Simple common sense in my opinion.

If UI clutter is your primary concern I suggest making a separate thread about it because this one isn't about that.

This thread is about turning ship names off. I don't want to have to see them, that is why I posted.

Wild assumptions about who people are and what they actually do. There should be censorship for this too.

Actually my 13 yr old daughter just looks at me cross eyed when I mention some of the off color stuff I see in games. Kids aren't stupid but a lot of adults are.

FWIW, Elite is rated Teen in the US (13 and up).

Furthermore, online content is typically unrated. Meaning, people with sensitive situations to whatever might show up in a multiplayer online environment should stick to single player modes.

Now, am I against FDev giving us control over HUD elements? No, not at all. I've been an advocate for customizable HUD since beta. However, I don't think FDev should feel obligated to cater to every little potentially offensive situation. If they did that they'd never have time to push any updates out since people will always find new and interesting ways to be offensive.

It is a choice between freedom or heavy restrictions. You can't have both.

Nothing wild about my assumptions, in fact they are based on the reactions put down in public for everyone to read, you can't censor someones opinion of you, you can only alter it by how you deal with them.

I don't think kids ARE stupid, I have a 15 year old daughter who is aware I am no angel but she does know that I expect good behaviour and polite respect in the house, what she sees and hears when in the house are my responsibility and are under my control. She knows right from wrong and she knows there are appropriate times for swearing and other not so savoury activities.

It was mostly in jest.

Just because I don't think language and expression should be limited doesn't meant that I'm the type of person that would put sexual innuendo or offensive content in a ship name. However, I do appreciate the clever folks that can be offensive without being overtly offensive.

Yup! Would really like to shut off the display of my own ship and reduce it to show the absolute number (not the percentage) of remaining hull and shields. I don't need it to help in orientation or to determine where fire is coming from. The radar does that just fine. Also, I'd like to stack the comms panel and the info panel as accordions on the right.

I'm probably biased from my time in flight sims flying older aircraft or maybe I'm just old but the fluff doesn't add anything for me. If I want a piece of information i will use the menu or whatever I need to to get it.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but (ship) names will never harm me. Whatever happened to the idea that we could just 'ignore' something?

But for those who cannot just ignore...sure...have an option to uncheck for displaying ship names. Seems simple enough.

How does the potential for ships named after male genitalia compare to 'knowing' you are playing a game that promotes human trafficking? Violence? Maybe some compartmentalization of thought is going on here.

Maybe my ship will be named the "Redacted" . :)

Do not say to others how they should play their game and how they should name their ship.

I never said that - you might want to stop putting words in others mouths it's an ugly character trait. But I see from your reply to Kaa that you don't know how easy it would be to add a toggle for the feature - please let the developers develop.

As for the player base being 'around 30' you would expect grown adults to be done with childish names and as for nobody caring about the PEGI rating... I guess your not a parent either from that comment.

Goodbye.

Tbh seeing someones idea of what is a suitable name for a ship is probably another means of identifying the mental age of the owner and might serve as a pre-warning for any unpleasantness.

Am quite looking forward to it really..

And as far as people "outgrowing" using juvenile names I think it was a new arctic survey ship (or something like that) that the British navy held an online competition to name. If they hadn't stepped in it was going to be called Boaty Mcboatface !

:)

I understand what you are getting at but Boaty McBoatface (Which is being built just down the road form where I live and is to be called the Sir David Attenborough now ;)) is a fun name, it has no swearing or use of profanity. Some of us do not think every other word needs to be a swear word or something with a sexual meaning to a teenager.

I also don't see changing mode as a viable alternative, why should I change the way I play the game just because little CMDR Jonny Noticeme wants to call his ship MeagBewbs!!1!¬! Chances are hes a ganker (pun intended? :D) so he'll just end up on the block list. I figure this will be the way I manage which ship's and CMDR's I see.
