Mass Effect 4

Really liking the Nomad so far, shame it doesn't have as much freedom of movement as an SRV, cant barrel roll the thing and it definitely feels heavier!

There is an upgrade path for the nomad, including better jump/boost thrusters, turning off traction control etc.. so it may improve as the game goes on :)

Random, no spoilers clip of me hoofing around on a low grav world, with a bit of combat at the end...

A good game (including the first Mass Effect) hooks you within the first 42 minutes.

I guess this is a matter of personal taste really, but I've just started the first Mass Effect game and am getting very close to ditching it at about 4 hours in due to the fact I don't care about any of the characters, nor the shonky storyline.

It's not helped by the fact the combat is dreadful, and there's far too much time spent running around empty corridors for my liking.

That's a perfectly valid opinion. I might need to add that it's a 2007 game and you can't reproduce my 2007 first hour experience with it a decade later. We for sure already played other better games which came after it (and got inspired by it), we are already used to better character development in serial entertainment and there won't be any jaw-dropping when you arrive at the Citadel for the first time. You simply missed that opportunity. Just like most of us missed watching Star Wars for the first time in 1977 like Chris Roberts did. :D

I agree that games usually don't age well. You are going to hate Mass Effect's asset-recycling (due to storage limitations) side quests. Nobody will get as excited today for their favorite 1984 franchise (Elite) as the old guard did back then.

Now Mass Effect: Andromeda doesn't compete with 1984 Elite or 2007 Mass Effect. It's a 2017 release with a 2017 price, so it's measured by current year's standards.

Certainly glad I didn't pre-order. Rest in Peace Mass Effect.

Ha :) it's not that bad by any stretch of imagination. Fair dues I've played 20 ish hours and it is just as good as anything ME was. Lots to do, fun combat etc. It's not witcher 3 levels of rpg goodness in terms of writing but that's a very high bar. This is a solid 8 game. The improvements are there but they have missed some opportunities to aspire to a truly legendary game.

Pick it up in sales but don't miss out eh :)

I've never been an ardent fan of the trilogy (I liked the first one and played all three.). I prefer KOTOR 1 and 2. But by far, this MEA is being the best of all for me.

So I got some new toys, went from an ancient Athlon II X4 630 to an 7th gen I5 7500, and from 6GB DDR3 1066 to 16GB DDR4: it makes quite the difference. :p With performance issues out of the way some updated impressions:

1) The SRV/buggy/Scarab/Whatever controls well. I actually enjoy the pointless and gimicky mode switching. Its very much on rails, but looking forward to exploring larger maps with it.
2) The actual on-mission gameplay is pretty much classic ME.
3) While the presentation of the story is pants, and I doubt it'll improve, there does appear to be an actual ME story hidden behind the Uncanny Valley.

Will continue the max 10 hours. So far I am expecting I might pick it up in a sale. :)

TotalBiscuit has just published a very long review on the game, which I agree with most of his points.

tl;dr: Very flawed but a game that he wants to keep playing.

His video on Andromeda is 2h long (!) but its worth checking out if you are on the fence of buying the game - TB covers most of the pros and cons pretty spot on. (but I still think characters are bland and the dialogue feels... cheep most of the time)

The amount of bad press the game seems to have generated, I expected every copy to be coming alive at night and strangling the world's kittehs and doggos. Yes, the writing seems to have been palmed off on a 16 year old work experience intern, the facial animations involve excess botox, the characters are blander than a take away based on traditional English food and I've had to Ctrl+Alt+Del several times just to get glitched missions to work, but...

...the environments look great (thanks Frostbite!), the lighting looks great (thanks Frostbite!), driving the buggy is great (thanks Frostbite!), the shooting is passable (thanks Frostbite!) and the desire to explore more is strong (I might have Ubisoft OCD-Icon syndrome surface-side, and the system exploration is still as fun as it ever was).

There also seems to be a lot of reused stuff from DA:I in here too: colonisation and outpost building, scourge = rifts etc.

I am still enjoying it. The world hasnt fallen in. I find keeping tabs on my objectives and tasks problematic but then I always do anyway even if theyre writ sky high in neon lights. The Nomad could use some weapons and the research/discovery thing is confusing as is the weapon bits and loadout stuff. But it is still fun. Ive managed to get to another planet after Eos and am currently trying to figure out what it is I am doing here. :)

For me the game is very good and also very beautiful.

Yep.

Yep. Personally I'm wondering whether moving to Frostbite was the source of some of the problems.

Although I do disagree with the system exploration... it's annoying, takes ~20s of canned animation to get between planets. Bah.

I've played about 15 mins of that game so haven't been ruined by it. The Scourge was in DAO; basically a McGuffin to move the story on. As I've been bimbling around MEA I've not invoked anything annoying yet.

Ah well.
