Had to describe ED to a colleague. I heard how boring I sounded! How would you describe to a non gamer?

Yeah

I was using my YouTube clips as illustrations too. They weren't sure of the point of putting videos on YouTube...

I guess I was being a bit too objective when describing ED. My colleagues looked, bemused.

What would you have used or said?

Thanks!

Don´t try, non gamer will never understand. [blah]

Avoid the gaming topic altogether or you will eventually get ridiculed. [yesnod]

Tell them its a Interactive Astronomy politics and Economics software simulation. The entire pupil population and staff will be made to use it and write essays about it. School trip will be arranged to visit Cambridge, along with the relevant "smiling publicity shots'

Well that's what my Comp Sci teacher said in 84 with regards to the Original Elite and that's what happened and why we are all here today.

It's like trying to explain astronomy as a hobby. A lot of the responses will be "so you sit there in the dark staring at tiny images through an eyepiece??"
Until you actually sit someone down in front of a telescope and tell them to take a look. The response is usually something like "holy crap, that's saturn!"

Some things are better experienced than explained.

ED is so niche, i cant even describe it to my gamer friends without sounding boring.

Many people kinda want wham bam thankyou man, this is more like wham bam (your thankyou man is waiting in Colonia).

my tagline

live life as a spaceman in a fairly accurately modelled simulation of the milky way in one of the most immersive VR games ever made.

My small print

The game is far far from complete with huge gaps in game mechanics, but the flight model is fun, combat is great, and there is other stuff to do as well. Its a game which for a lot of the time you may want an audiobook in the background. It is not for everyone and some research is essential before buying.

I love ED....... and I hate ED.... such is the way of it.

I generally go for: 'These crazy fools have made a 1:1 galaxy. (If they 'ooh' with any interest at this point I'll lay down some Stellar Forge stuff, or probably talk about Trappist 1 now). And you can kinda live out Han Solo dreams within it.'

A lot of non-gamers can get the impressiveness of those two aspects. Even if they look at you like you're some new form of talking gel throughout the process ;)

EDIT: Oh if you mean actual other gamers, I go with: Flight model is a lot of fun, especially FA off (make swooping motions with hands to describe Newtonian tricks), has that whole 'new car smell' progression; mad audio; makes you feel like you're actually a pilot in space when your canopy gets smashed or you see planets and suns align behind your favourite dingy space port. (And then if they're interested, I warn them about the travel times and the dangling gameplay infrastructure ;))

I wouldn't use words. I'd channel my best Chris Roberts

Violently shaking, pretending my hand is pulling a hard maneuvers on a joystick. Making pew pew sounds with my mouth. Throw in a "shhhwooosh" and a "neeerraaamm"

Then cry as I pretend to grip with space madness.

Then open my eyes and realize I'm alone.

"Its like trying to tell a stranger about rock & roll"

90% of my buds are gamers, so I just compare it to others we have played over the decades.
Most did over 10 years in EVE, and it soured them from space flight.

You mean like this...

right? ;)

I don't know that many non-gamers that I actually talk to.. but I generally describe Elite as:

"A space simulator that plays more like a flight simulator."

"Member when you were a kid and wanted to be an astronaut? Member when you were told to get out of the house and make your own fun? Combine these two things and spend five grand on gaming equipment and see if you're still smiling. Ah what the hell it's an old person's game I give up." It usually goes something like that for me, If I can be bothered at all. Even avid gamers eyes gloss over when you try to explain it.
