Maaan these birds, when they gonna stop?
I blame the spice girls with all that "girl power nonsense" back in the 1990's

Just why did I read this as "Mostly HAIRLESS fem pilot" is beyond my comprehension.
I disagree with you here. Firstly, the character isn't being praised or put on a pedestal for being gay. She's a procedurally generated image and a paragraph of text; not much character to judge! It's Frontier getting a small kudos for doing a teeny bit of effort. Secondly, this isn't really news, as people have pointed it out. It's just one person saying "Hey, neat." I think we should be encouraging stuff like that; it's just a bit of positive pressure to keep things rolling along. As a gay man in the States, I saw last November how things can slip backwards.
Freudian Slip showing?
Ooooh you just made me think. FDev could have simpled cocked up the text and it was actually meant for a guy LOL
As a straight man, I long for the day this kind of thing isn't worthy of being seen as "news" as well. No one should care who loves who, how, where, why, when - it's really not any of anyone else's business anyways and it's not a big deal. It's not even a little deal. Hell, it's not a deal at all. People so need to learn the art of minding their own business. Granted, I get the whole social engineering aspect of it - to get people to accept something they are not accustomed to accepting means you have to shove it in their faces at every opportunity until they simply stop reacting at all. Hollywood and the media have been doing this for quite some time, and are not going to relent, unless it starts costing them too much money - at which time they will switch they position to "The only reason the rest of you aren't spending your money on us is because you still hate us" because that's what the mindset for them is.
That is actually a possibility. I saw a male say this and thought, "If they haven`t really worked on it, a female could end up saying this."
But either way they probably thought, "What the heck! It`s 2016, leave it in!"

?
Again, this really doesn't qualify as news or shoving content in people's faces. FDev didn't send out a newsletter. I understand why people wouldn't want some explicit political manifesto from Frontier. But, instead of just expressing a lack of interest, you make it sound like we shouldn't be talking about a casually introduced gay "character." I don't think you intended the latter, but its effect can be rather pernicious.
I mean, you didn't see me complaining whenever someone posted a crew member that mentioned an opposite-sex partner. If we never discuss this, or character bios never mention same-sex partners, what are people going to assume? They (likely including myself) are going to assume that every single one is straight. I don't what that to happen, so I'm happy when things like this show up.
As a gay man, I long for the day this kind of thing isn't worthy of being seen as "news." I'd really just like to be treated as anyone else--which doesn't mean being put up on a pedestal every time some gay character gets found in a video game. So what? It's great we're being represented, but that's enough; it doesn't need to be announced.
Still, I, personally, appreciate the find, OP.
I'm not arguing, this is certainly not "news-worthy", not even Donald Trump "fake news-worthy".
Should we talk about it? There is no way to type out the expression that question invokes, so let me try to explain...
Is it something that matters, one way or another? Is it actually discussion-worthy? To some, yes, probably. To others, probably not, and to others still, even the thought that such a thing could even exist is likely to incite them to torches and pitchforks, so they're probably better off not even knowing. I can't make that call. It's not a big deal to me, whoever, whatever, where ever - I have my life, other people have theirs, and that's all it takes for me to get by from one day to the next. There isn't enough time in all eternity to spend worrying about things like that.
I'm not complaining - in fact, I plead complete apathy on the matter. If the character bios don't mention the characters partners, I'm going to assume they are NPC's and I don't care what their history is, as long as they can fly and shoot my enemies. What they do in their spare time is their business. Or, in reality, they're just imaginary characters, and their bios really don't mean much anyways.
Now, if M. Virginia Goodman above happened to gain a combat bonus vs. Slave Traders, or suffered a penalty when engaging enemy ships with slaves onboard, then that bio would mean something, otherwise it's just flavor text, and it has the flavor of cardboard.
all right love, don't get your knickers in twist
Eh, I think this is just a classic internet argument: no one wants to admit they pretty much agree with each other.
I guess the crux of it is that I'm uncomfortable with the overlap I perceive between "Meh, this is kinda neat but not news" and "we shouldn't talk about people being gay unless it's absolutely necessary." I don't think anyone genuinely means the latter, but that's what I sense from those who wish we weren't in this thread.

The fact that we get a thread like this, frankly in my eyes, is scary, that homosexuality is still a 'topic' is a bit insane in my book, but unfortunately not surprising.

I'm not sure where your sentences start and end here, but here's the deal - No matter how far into the future this spinning blue ball takes us, it will never ever ever ever not be a thing. It will always be a major concern of a large group of people somewhere, and will always be of minor concern to smaller groups of people and individuals everywhere else. That's just the way it is. Both positive and negative attitudes on the subject are going to wax and wane among various people and societies until the end of time.
