How very PC of Frontier....

First of all, nothing "[slipped] backwards" in November. Our rights are exactly the same now as they were before and I imagine they will be for the next four years or more. It shouldn't surprise you that there are people who don't agree with our sexuality or lifestyle. With ~330 million people in the States from a plethora of backgrounds and cultures, it should be expected that not everyone will agree.

Second, my issue wasn't with this showing up in the game or suggesting the game was announcing it; my issue was that the OP felt it was "newsworthy" as if the presence of a gay character needs to be announced as something super special. It isn't. We are normal and the presence of a gay character should be treated as normal--not something to celebrate. "Positive pressure," as you call it, just makes the other side more hardened against us ("Why do they have to shove this in our faces?!"). There's a gay character in Elite. Cool, moving on.

We can disagree on politics, there's nothing wrong with that. I'll admit that the phrase "slipped backwards" was partisan rhetoric. But our rights aren't the same, as of Tuesday. The current administration has revoked Executive Order 13673. It may be a small step, but it isn't a good one.

I guess we have different standards for announcing or shoving content in people's faces. The OP posted something innocuous that they appreciated; it wasn't even Frontier publicizing the info. That isn't inflammatory. By "positive pressure," all I meant was we should let Frontier know that we appreciate these diverse bios, even it's a small thing or accident. How is a single thread saying thanks going to harden people against us? Should we never mention that someone has a same-sex spouse or mention that ME:A lets you romance who you want?

Too true. Same thing happens with Religion and other Political items.

It's just a female pilot with a wife! Why is pointing that out in a casual, tepidly positive way bad?

You should watch your phrasing.

With the timestamps on the posts I'm assuming this is an American thread. Elite is a British game and I thought Britain was a few years ahead of USA in its social attitudes, but with the election of Donald Trump, maybe we are a few decades ahead.

The lassie's hair is cut short, but the in-game explanation is that short hair is more manageable in microgravity.

Here's hoping that the people so incensed by all this PC mumbo jumbo will refuse to play the game. Their voluntary exclusion will make the game a nicer place.

That's exactly the point, it's just that, a female pilot with a wife. It was pointed out as if it's somehow noteworthy or extraordinary. It simply isn't to me. It also starts with "How very PC Frontier..." and how 'surprised' the OP was. Why is it surprising? Is it really that PC? It feels pretty normal and natural to me. It'd be like creating a thread to point out an ethnicity in the game. Cool, so the game is emulating real life diversity, now what? I guess when things like this are just normal, it doesn't feel like there's a reason to point it out. Especially with my wife owning a restaurant in West Hollywood, it's also like pointing out the sky appears to be blue to me. Yep, sure is! Yep, people sure do have same sex preferences!

It's not that it's inherently bad, but I do agree with playfuldreamer that it could be construed as negative by some. That 'positive pressure' if you will. I personally roll my eyes when Religious things are constantly shoved in my face by people I know. I don't go burning bridges over it or make a stink, but being constantly reminded that someone exists as X (Christian, Muslim, Black, Hispanic, Liberal, Democrat, whatever it is) does get a bit trying. This isn't what this is of course, I'm just elaborating on my agreement with playfuldreamer. Someone could take it that way.

To be completely clear in summary, it's not that it's bad, the reaction was more like "Cool, and?" that's all. Hope that's acceptable.

Because shes a lesbian? I dont get how thats "politically correct" in any regard.

Fact is all the bios of NPC crew is like a mad-lib. It has a fill in the blank style setting and there's a group of things to pull from. They all follow the same style, starting out with their past like parents/significant others, to who they worked for or aspire to, then ends with their experience as a pilot ie. killing pirates or saving slaves etc. The RNG is so obvious the OP is borderline trolling.

Perhaps I shouldn't have used the word pressure. To be clear, that wasn't in reference to other players; I'm not saying everyone needs to stop by this thread and laud FDev for their revolutionary space lesbians. All I meant was players that do appreciate diversity in their games should let developers know. How many criticisms of ME:A are claiming "SJW capitulation" is the cause of any problems? I think there should be a counter balance to that, by people who are so inclined.

No one in this thread is acting as if they are surprised. Most of the comments are along the lines of "Cool, and?" I'm just confused by the handful of posters saying that we shouldn't mention this at all. What's the harm in pointing out an innocuous bit of positivity?

This. This so much.

I'm surprised to read the 'wife' concept still exists in 3303.

I think it's a slang term that has stuck. Galnet uses the therm 'life partner', which is probably more up to date and official.

I miss the personal ads from FFE. They presented some really interesting life choices. :)

'LOUSY SENSE OF HUMOUR? Me too. Break free of the ad-time stereotype and join me in a little plain, unadulterated hedonism in the space between the worlds. If you're at least partially human ( or can fake it convincingly) and are looking for commitment-free fun with a like-minded fellow-being then send me a mail. Only interesting letters answered.'

odd. strange. and really really ultra PC if it's not a bug. i bought elite in expectation that every character's straightness will be stated obsessively, often and with a massive redundancy a la anything from last century 60s...but it's not. it's a weird choice but not worrying me anywhere so much as the fact that there won't be Woodstock this year.

On the bright side Star Citizen saves the day again: there are zero women in their universe at all. You can never be too safe, what with all those stealth lesbians we have nowadays. :)

I hate that kind of pc/sjw crap.

What sleutelbos and Enderby just said. Times change thankfully. My kids have friends that have two mums and no-one bats an eyelid. The internet is a breeding ground for SJW's, I'll grant you that, but this just isn't an example of that.

Much more controverial is how FD promotes that horrible CQC gamemode! I'd never hire this npc on those grounds alone. "So...you developed your skills in CQC and thereby supported a gamemode that we all loathe? NEXT"
