David Braben interview

Please leave solo mode ... :) :p

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

What a pointless response. Picking a faction has no bearing on this game what-so-ever and it doesn't matter if you are in solo or open, because with the right mechanics any mode of play will be a joy to play, because the right mechanic will make you feel like you are in the universe of Elite, the one they sold to start the project and the one they sold down the river.

I remember when he said that it would be disappointing if you landed on a planet and it was just another height map

Lol, did he really say that?

I'd love to see the link to that quote.

If anyone sees him game please ask him if he remembers saying that and what his reaction is now

And then people complain about others having distorted expectations. To the white knights; just look at the trailer played in the background, with the two capital ships. If that is not false advertisement, then what is?

One thing is for sure; Elite trailers are not to be trusted same as DB interviews taking for granted.
I remenber DB describing galaxy full of life with great exploration features and mehanics through 10 years dev plan, well 5years after we have completley different game with only us-ship's with pew pew features.
But who knows maybe 2.4 and 3.0 is something grounbraking.

I don't get the whole Braben fanboi routine...possibly because until now and a brief fling in '84 with the original, this is the first and possibly last frontier game I have ever played. Brabens name was utterly unknown to me before this, so I really don't get the whole hero worship thing. Guys just another lead dev to me, really nothng any more special than that, and I sure as hell don't hang on every word the guy says.

He promised so much in the beginning and delivered pew pew...basically Id take what this guys says with a humungous dose of salt...basically Ill believe it when I see it and as I aint seeing anything other than a dev using a sales pitch. That's really my most honest and heartfelt opinion on this Braben guy...which wont go down well but whatever...never cared before and don't cae now. I'll speak my mind and to hell with the white knights salty reactions ^

Oh silly, haven't you been reading the forums? The game is doomed. Nothing is coming. Everything is pointless.

On a positive note, I like this slow build-up in story. I look forward to every update. It going to be interesting for sure!

Slow build up? Excruciating is a better word. It's terrible.

I get the Braben love completely.

Back in the 80's, he and Ian created THE space game. It was revolutionary, and Braben had a direct hand in it. He helped code and design it. Then he made the sequels, and they were equally loved by space game fans worldwide. For me, his name is up there with the likes of Shigeru Miyamoto, Jeff Minter, Yuji Naka, Sid Meier and all the other developers from the early days of video games, developers that broke new ground.

However, nowadays Braben isn't a designer, coder, producer or whatever. He's a CEO. He has no day to day input on ED's development. At the most, he gives the team nebulous instructions and leaves them to implement it. Braben is a figurehead now, nothing more.

More Elite:Lalaland vision. There's a serious disconnect between what DB perceives ED to be and what we've actually got...

So atmo landing and gas géants are in the pipe... made my day [yesnod]

I think that will be the next big thing (season 3), I can very well imagine we'll be able to "land" on gas giants only at launch, then it will be extended to worlds without water... :)

- - - Updated - - -

DB is imo a man with passion which was able follow his dreams and make (making) them alive. A lot space for envy here ... :)

Indeed, and there is a huge gap between games built on boardroom business cases (EA, Ubisoft stuff) and those built on vision and passion. Whatever the whiners say, E : D is truly a landmark game.

I hope that this means that in 2.4 they'll finally add the military career they talked about. I just don't know how that would work after 3 years, when a lot of players already grinded their ranks.

Oh God.

Is DB still going on about the precise graphic realisation of planetary vulcanism, or have we moved on from that now?

He is so boring he makes my mammaries hurt, and I don't even have any.

Braben, I fear, was being used as marketing - which is very sad.

Also, and I think this is fair to say, his job of inciting interest in Elite is done, as the majority of console owners most likely don't know who he is.

It would be very interesting to know just how much input he has in the design phases of the game.

I would say a massive influence. He is, afterall, the main man. And he never wanted a game, that much is clear.

It is his vanity project with some lame and repetitive game elements attached.

That's obvious considering the current direction ED is taking, but whatever, not gonna argue the point on this thread...it would go south fast.

I was a teenager in the 80s too although having a computer was something kids where I grew up either stole, or got from the back of a van, and it wasn't until the 90s where I started actually gaming hard, so my first outing with the original elite was at a m8s house cos they were from a nice area. My life took a somewhat different direction so the whole "greatest space game ever made" is totally lost on me. Fer me, that's freelancer but that's ancient history now ^
