Fuel Scoops.

I have already deduced that its quite easy to run out of Fuel.So just how do Fuel Scoops actually work?

Equip a fuel scoop
Fly in supercruise around any KGB FOAM star at any supercruise speed. Don't get too close and have your ships nose in the general direction of the star.
It will fuel automatically.

They are an automatic device that takes up an internal slot. When you are close enough to a star that can be scooped from (any of the following types; KGB FOAM) the scoop will automatically trigger (assuming it has not been turned off in the modules screen), with both audio and visual messages ("Fuel Scooping" and a display in the HUD). Monitor the temperature, and pull away from the star if it goes over 70%, as it can then climb very quickly.

Once your tanks are full ("Fuel scooping complete") you can pull away from the star. If you are jumping to another system wait until you hear "Fuel scoop disengaged" and the display disappears from the HUD, otherwise it is possible to take heat damage when jumping. This is because the external heat (from the star) and the internal heat from the FSD spooling up could tip you over 100%.

Watch your temperature, I scoop at speed if I'm travelling a great distance in fast mode (rather than stopping at most systems to explore) but that involves knowing how close you can circle that particular star type.

You can, whilst getting used to scooping, zero throttle as you enter the system, gently throttle up and keep an eye on the temperature. If you drop speed as low as you can at about 61/62 percent heat you should scoop safely. Over 63% and even stationary you can carry on heating up.

Oh and get the best scoop you can afford, it vastly increases the scoop rate.

As said you need to be close to a star of type O B A F G K M (mnemonic is Oh Be A Fine Girl Kiss Me). You can filter for these on the galaxy map but make sure you tick the box apply to route.

Really all you have to do is lift the nose of your ship above the horizon of the star enough so you don't crash into the star and as you go past the scoop should just kick in and start scooping.

As said above... Here the stars are classified by value (exploration scan), from highest to lowest.

What I have noticed is a lot of the guides tell you to filter by this when doing long exploration, but won't you be missing out on lots of systems? Surely you don't need to fuel scoop *every* jump? Is there a tutorial for exploration which explains a better way?

I never do if exploring, you can just keep an eye on the fuel levels, start getting twitchy if it gets down to half and look on the map to make sure there's one in range. Sometimes though I just want to get to the destination (say a passenger mission 10k Ly out) so you could filter for that type of trip (although I normally don't personally).

Is it possible to unequip the fuel scoop once you reach your destination and replace it with something else?

Is there a way to tell how many ly you can travel with the current fuel you have onboard?

Fuel Scoops are an Internal module. If you feel you don't need the scoop you can remove it (or not even equip it but I keep mine equipped at all times if I use one (my Imperial Eagle doesn't have one). And most stations won't have every category or size of some items. You might find that a station is only carrying turrets for most weapons (Aulin Enterprise, Aulin), but if you become Elite, you have access to Shinrarta Dezhra which has EVERY ship and module. All ships are rather modular (pardon that...) so if you wanted to take a Type-9 Heavy Transport and kit it out for combat you can.
There is a menu on your Right-hand panel that that will tell you what your jump range is currently as well as your maximum range when low enough on fuel.
if you are about to run into combat, you can shut down modules to save on power so your bigger guns will have the energy to fire. There's few feelings worse than charging into combat and having your ship be unable to defend itself because the Planetary Hanger Bay, Fuel Scoop, Advanced Discovery Scanner, Collector Limpet Controller, and the microwave oven are all drawing power from the Power Plant, thus preventing the Plasma Accelerators from coming online.

Yes the Galaxy map, you can plot a route of up to 1000 Ly distance, a solid line on that route means you've got fuel to get that far, a dotted line means you'll have run out of fuel.

You can even park your ship at a star (make sure your below 63 % heat and throttle right back) and look at the map and watch the solid extend as you fuel scoop.

You don't miss out any if you use economical route plotting, but you will then be doing a lot of jumps to get where you want to go.

Also the kgbfoam filter doesn't have to filter your route, it can just show you the scoopable stars. Unless you have the filter route option ticked, it won't actually affect the route plotting.

If you find yourself in a brown dwarf field and getting low on fuel you can just do this to easily see a nearby scoopable.

There are lots of explorer videos about but, to be honest, if exploring, and you are at a scoopable, it makes sense to just fill up while there.

The max jump range is only really important if you have a fixed destination you want to get to asap. Otherwise, exploring is best done at a nice easy pace. Less accidental bumping into stars that way too!

Cool - thanks.

I have since found out that you can filter the Galactic Map to show Stars that will allow Fuel Scooping,so that makes things a LOT easier.
