After Weeks Trapped In Solo...

... I'll soon™ be back in Open!

Back when i first started, i used to play in Solo, because i wasn't fond of the random Interdictions (only had a few) and i couldn't afford the losses (not that i had any), then i joined Mobius, and stayed there for a while. Meeting CMDRs was fun, made many friends, but everything felt a bit too safe.

Then finally, I moved to Open.
It's just so much more fun, the risk of random encounters really spices the game up if its feeling too samey.
I only switched back to Solo or Mobius for those silly Engineer commodities, back when we needed them, because finding them was a total pain in the backside, and the risk of loss was not my idea of fun. Lol

Then I moved from my new/old flat, with a fibre connection, to my new 200 year old house... with no internet connection. Lol

It took 3 weeks just to get BT out to connect it. And then it only ran at 400kb/s.... sometimes just 25kb/s. Or nothing at all! It's been dropping constantly for months, and BT are only just coming out to hopefully, finally fix it tomorrow! (Been saying that for ages too!)
In this time, I've spent nearly my entire time in Solo, because for some reason, hyperspace and supercruise in Open was nearly impossible, even if no one was around. And i didn't want to unintentionally log on someone, or lag them out.

The game simply, for me, is lame in Solo, there's no challenge for me, combat in any of my ships is a doddle, the only fun left, for me, is meeting people and being generally ridiculous. :p The last time i did that, was searching for the new alien ruins with a couple of other CMDRs.

But being trapped in solo has actually gotten so dull, that i brought 7 Days To Die, and played that for weeks, then brought No Man's Sky and played that for..Uh...Hours (already bored of that, wasted £20!).

But I'm almost back, hopefully!

Just in time for a major update. Lol
Which even if my internet works as intended, will take days. Lol

So if you see an overly chatty CMDR over the next few weeks, it's probably me!

Fly safe all!

Many will agree with you, me being one of them (solo, yuck). Many others will disagree with you.

The key words are challenge, saftey. You, like me; dont like to have the game insanely safe, with no challenge. Other do, others like that they are 95% safe with no challenge, they can just build their empire and are happy to do so.

I guess both have a place.

really enough of the thinly veiled insults against those who do not play in open already... its nothing to do with risk for many of us. bring on the chance to meet some hard as nails npcs please....

7 Days to Die is a good Early Accesss game, my best spend 10€ (with more than 2000 hours in - that's value for the money!!!).
IT's constantly improved, adding new features, and - to get back to Elite/FD somehow, the Developers make weekly Dev-Diaries in Video-Style with Let'sPlays and FAQs of questions which was put together in the forums...

This, my friends, is what I call Community-Work, building a Relationship with the community!

I don't think it's always about safety/challenge, though. Some people (and I'm very nearly one of them) simply aren't social gamers, and don't want any interaction with other people in-game. For instance, I have no interest in multi-crew or wings. I'll never be part of a group, or clan, or whatever. I'm happy to get and receive the occasional 'o7' from fellow hollow squares, but beyond that I have no interest in meeting and greeting.

I say this many nights I play...

...because CMDR StiTch! is a more beneficent chap than he lets off sometimes, and will on occasion log to PG once docked at an engineer base for extended stays.

He'd like to pretend it's because he has a heart of gold and wants to make docking easy for all, but he doesn't. He's just tired of getting disconnects while trying to roll.

NMS is definitely a bit of a Marmite game. I bought it on PS4 and played the hell out of it for weeks. It's got some interesting features, but ultimately doesn't have lasting appeal (for me). I've kept an eye on the development and I may spin it up again to see what's new, but I suspect it'll be a while before I jump back in properly.

Aye but i happen to know you play in Open almost exclusively :).

hope OP does not mind me going OT but... i saw this for £15 on ps4. never seen the PC version this cheap however. After all its updates if i saw it at that for PC i may bite..... that said, it really needs VR if i want to play it.

(I blame Sony for that being dropped) - possibly unfairly - but the devs were playing NMS on the oculus rift years ago before Sony got involved.

I really (REALLY) fancy hellion but its forced all online competitive PvP is putting me off. if private servers get announced and it has enough environmental challenges and some npcs i am definitely getting it, it looks really cool.

either way, even if ultimately not for me, i have so much respect for the devs of that. they have done an astounding job so far imo.

Its not an insult, but you may read it this way if you wish.

For the love of....get over yourself hero.
It's a game. A space ship video game.

VR wouldn't have changed that it was about the worst attempt at procedural generation I've ever seen.

I don't know if it has changed now...but when I played it, the game was basically the epitome of "seen one, seen them all".

Oh, for sure, but I almost didn't and I certainly wouldn't want to push anyone to play in Open if they didn't want to. I very nearly didn't play in Open, and i'm not sure it would take much more than a couple of bad encounters to make me leave Open. Seeing the odd hollow square just adds a tiny little bit more colour to the universe, but it's far from necessary (for me).

By itself, that means nothing. I could play in Open exclusively. Set up home in a fringe system, and never see another player except by happenstance.

What do you do in Open? Do you do trade at trade CGs? If so, i'll give you kudos. Do you go to trade CGs and shoot traders? Hmm... no kudos for that, that's even easier than killing NPCs.

In short, playing in Open by itself isn't praiseworthy. Its what you do there that might be. The same can be extended to PG or Solo. If someone makes the game a challenge for themselves, then regardless of mode, they get kudos. If someone doesn't, then kudos isn't going to be given.

Its enough though, seeing hollow squares is enough to make you re-think the way you approach a station, or even just check what they are flying to suss out their intentions. I dont find Open to be any more or any less social than Solo unless i want it to be, no one has ever randomly said hi to me, the occasional o7 in local but not to me.

It's one of those games where it's almost impossible to say if you're going to like it or not without playing it for a few hours.

The procedural generation of the planetary landscapes is very impressive. The fact that there are zero load screen (apart from hyperspace) is impressive.

But the ground-based combat is ropey, and the space combat is awful - to the extent that I wish they hadn't bothered with it.

I'm damning with faint praise - as I say, I played if for weeks (about 6) until I'd explored every aspect, learned all three languages, been to the centre of about 4 galaxies and then...got very bored very quickly.

I'd say neither are praiseworthy. People think saying that people like safety and less challenge is an insult but its true, alot of people on the forums openly admit it. Why should it be an insult though? If that's how a player has fun, go for it.

you are missing the point.... it is your assumption that "players in open are up for a challenge, players not in open want easy mode with no challenge"..... What about those in open who go out of their way to avoid contact, or those in open who solely play in wing of 4 and prey only on weak ships with no backup, or those in solo who desperately pine for the chance to meet some really tough npcs.

i am not on about the bugged npc weapins (the beam plasma was especially terrifying!) but it would be cool to get some pretty well modded up elite npcs imo (just not the lame invincible player builds which some have, that i simply refuse to do myself, so would NOT want npcs getting ;) )

my hope is thargoids scratches my itch. if they are weak, then i will be v dissaponted. Tough BUT not invincilbe is what i hope for . a tough balancing act considering so many different builds in the game, some with and some without access to eng mods.

Heh, its a frequent anecdote that saying hello to someone in Open causes them to high wake :D
