What has FD got right in the game?

Well being one of those people who have complained about a few things the one thing which keeps my playing is now fracking amazing the core environment is. As others have said things like audio, ship & station models, planets and the scale is just top notch. It's a wonderful sandbox.

madwax....

The cockpits or ship interiors are awesome.
The UI and the panels.
The outfitting system with real depth.
The audio.
Some -but not all- graphic effects.
Sometimes the music.

And there is something special about the flying mechanics that makes the game very cinematic when on a Wing.

PS: I think some people often confuse criticism with whining, ironically, the same ones often end up whining about whining. Oh the irony!

Like others pointed out, the music, and the sound in general is fantastic. The sound when you blow up another ship with a good pair of headphones is priceless. I play bounty hunting mainly to hear that sound :D

The sound and visual aspects of the game are outstanding bordering on Oscar winning.

The game is an absolute Gem and is full of positive features. The positives far outweigh the negatives, in fact the positives are beyond comparison to the negatives.

IMHO, the negatives that many players, myself included, constantly gripe about is due to the fact that the game is a 'work in progress' and we have this Forum to sound off in the hopes that we may, individually and collectively, have input to the game's development. That alone is priceless!

This is a fantastic thread and hats off to the OP for starting it and please take stock and heart dear FD, we do love ya for this awesome game.

Crime and Punishment?

The Sol system?

Interesting thread: There is not a lot of 'positive feedback' here.

I guess, you can please some of the players, some of the time; but not all of the players, all of the time.

Enough to keep people coming back for more. From whiners to fanboys, they are all still here.

That speaks volumes.

Actually, in many cases that nostalgia was planted by the earlier Elite games, in my case Frontier: Elite 2.

And on topic:

Scale of things. Everything is big, ships are huuuge, stations are massiiiiive.

VR.

Audio - nice, but the sound of propellers in space on some ships is strange.

And as a programmer I have to admit that the galaxy is mind-blowingly big and planets are also big.

Will not post negative things here.

Nearly everything about ED has been done well. FD have made the right choices in almost every aspect.

I think the choice to allow players to be special nuggets in their super combat ships is a poor choice, but most players disagree with this. So even that was probably a good choice.

* Graphics are great, sounddesign is the best I ever heard.
* Flight model (as far as I can judge) is great.
* The sheer size of the "open world" is crazy.
* FD´s ambition to apply real world physics and star data. I love that point, it made me read so much about space and time, so I feel a little smarter now.
* FD´s approach to develop the game (the 10 year frame) paired with their own engine. Looking at the troubles SC is facing with engines, i believe this could be an important future factor
* The outstanding community

Everything about the game is great, throwing VR on to it blows it out of the water. BUT its major downside is that just about every single part of the game play feels like a placeholder. Even combat (not flight mechanics as such which I find fun) which has had much more done for it than exploration and mining, feels like something is missing. Wars feel empty and pointless, bounty hunting means lining up wave after wave of never ending bad guys in your sights.

BUT it's still an outstanding game, even before I put on a VR headset.

Pretty much everything is good considering the scale of the galaxy. Sure there are parts that are daft, is an engineer really going to get through 200 tonnes of brandy before their next customer arrives?

The ships are awesome, each has good points, but there's always a quirk you need to deal with. For me though (as a keen musician) the audio is amazing. It never goes stale even after years of play.

- scale of the galaxy even if is filled with beige it is impressive.
- flight model, I love it.
- economy, trade model, maybe it is not great, but much better than in other games I played.
- some graphic effects, sometimes produces really nice screenshots,
- some ships models,
- audio, traffic controllers
