What has FD got right in the game?

The flight model, the ship/station design, sounds effecs/music, stellar forge (but they have created big map but can't fill it with anything). A lot of stuff were done right, they have strong foundations, but they have had that foundation since the first beta release i played 2.5 years ago, they haven't been able to build on that with same quality. There is big quality difference between stuff they have created/added before the first beta and after the first beta. What they have put on top of the foundation are mostly unfinished, rushed or/and buggy features that never got same care and detail as the stellar forge. Could you image the game we would have if they had spend time and care to develop the game instead of stellar forge.

The fact that every player, regardless of game mode or platform, affects and experiences the single shared galaxy state. Also that all content is implemented in every game mode (except Wings / Multi-Crew in Solo, of course).

As well as the galaxy itself, the fact that we are simply pilots in the void (and not "The Chosen One"), the sound, the graphics, the flight model and the BGS that ties everything together.

I like to play both, get my moneys worth ;).

I should prolly point out what i meant by that is the more vocal crowd on every game forum ever are the displeased ones. Which is why it always seems that people dislike things/moan more on forums than is actually true.

Flight model, sound, visuals and procedural generation. Beyond that, everything is in dire need of improvement in my mind.

Definitely the sound.
That's always a big thing for me, games that get the sound right are something.
Games that get the sound like elite does are a whole nother story.
Settings on full range, amplifier two thirds up, and I am sitting inside that ship.

The amount of membrane area from the front and rear channels relentlessly forces the air around me to move,
makes cannon or hull noises palpable on the desk and hotas case.
The first time flying through a mailbox at wall shaking volumes nearly made me fall out of the chair, such a distinct and prominent sound, one of those rare gaming moments I'll always remember.

Having built my own 15" subwoofer the size of a washing machine gives a whole other meaning to the famous 'honk'.
This sound has frequencies down to the mid-20Hz region, which can not be reproduced by headphones, not to that magnitude.

Every elite player owes it to the audio engineers in this game to at least try and find someone with a potent 5.1 system to play elite on it.

So far, I love the sheer scale of the milky way, the design of the ships and stations, the feeling of being some little cog in a place that is so much bigger than me. I love the amazing views - this game is a screenshot generator. The subly addictive way you work for getting upgrades and better ships only to be able to work for even better ships and upgrades. I think the way they approach the community is great and am enjoying the live streams. And I love that finally I have discovered a game that will be growing for years to come, instead of simply stopping like Skyrim and Fallout (though I loved those too and I will admit that they differ greatly from the way ED tells its story).

The sound and visual aspects of the game are outstanding bordering on Oscar winning.

Agreed, and to add the flight model/mechanics

The feeling of flying a ship with all the complexity and controls at your finger tips.

The SRV I can fly/drive it for hours at a time and love skipping, spinning from rock to rock.

The galaxy, I can play in a game that has a size that I still cant truly comprehend.

The development, Elite isn't stuck it is alive and growing/changing living.

Outfitting and engineering keeps me busy and the outcomes are really noticeable in your ship.

The background stories/mysteries I love how you can get involved or just read the newspaper!

The feeling/the sound/the visual style.

Sandy/Ed/The Braben/Dav/Adam and the rest, they speak to us and entertain us as a player I know who is developing my game and I know their personalities. This is great, brave and something they don't have to do.

The community Elite have embraced the community and set up forums and made our voice an important part of the game.

In order from "Holy Smoke, that's good," down to... "Mmm, pretty good."

Stellar Forge

I think the stellar forge should go down in history as one of the most outrageously ambitious procedural generation systems ever created! NMS is nice and all, but the fact that they have created, here, a system that generates an entire galaxy, approaching reality while allowing for actual NASA data to be injected on the fly is an astounding merger of gaming and science. Stellar stuff!

VR

The fact that even after an entire year since the Oculus was released, Elite dangerous is THE game to beat. I've played many other VR games from their store and nothing touches the sheer balls-to-bones implementation of VR in this game: It is baked into this game from the foundations and it shows. Moreover, the fact that this game is far more intricate than many of the other "fob" or "novelty" titles that use VR for the sake of it just shows how much foresight was put in.
This cannot be overstated and is why the "other" space games which either don't have VR or won't have it by the time they come out are seriously missing a trick.

Sound

The sound in this game has always been first rate, but the DTS update recently was the icing on the cake... p.s. Sounds make sense most with a head tracker or VR. Phenomenal 3D spaciousness.

Game Scale

A consequence of the first point, perhaps, but the fact that you could have a scale of 100 LY per meter displayed on your screen and the map would be about 1km wide and long and 100m deep is just MIND BLOWING. No other game comes close to this grand scale. The concept of supercruise is a contentious point, but I believe it gets across the idea of scale without making most daily trips odious. Engineers and Neutron Stars help, too. Grand!

Play NMS for a few minutes and it's immediate how ADS Teenager focussed their scaling system is. The fact that you can see a space station orbiting a distant planet, but you get there the space station is about the size of an outpost. not only that but you can reach a planet in 2-3 hours at surface speeds!

Local Scale

When I first started to play this game, I felt that the Eagle and Sidewinder were about the size of a station wagon. and that the trees along the landing pads of luxury stations were merely pot plants.... This changed with VR, when you suddenly realise that the cockpit of the T9 is two storeys high! Marvellous!

Graphics

The style guides for the Lakon, Core Dynamics and Gutamaya ships are outstanding. The station interiors are also sumptuous. Especially in VR. The hyperspace jump exits where the star rushes toward you are epic (although, one gets too familiar with them to notice after a while.)
The CMDR avatar is also a nice (but redundant) touch. Great stuff...

Vehicle Control an Interface

Ships are enjoyable to fly with a HOTAS and are quite navigable while using VR if your HOTAS has enough widgets. It is the only game that flawlessly recognises my X-65F Joystick analogue thumbstick, which I use for vertical and horizontal thrust.
the T9 is a monster! It feels like a monster and it flies like a cow!

SRV Wavescanner

Before the bug struck, the wavescanner was the most involved mechanic in the game which rewarded skill with increased speed of procurement! Very underrated bit of programming there. It did get a bit too much use with the Engineers, however!
Nice touch!

Hmm... I think if I continued, it would no longer be an entirely positive post! ;-)

My Master states that if the fight is not won before it has begun; do a Sir Robin.

3 years and we still have place order... i not mean the contents that will come with future paid expansion... I mean the content that FD have talk to be in the base game and in horizon season....

were are the new SRVs ? were are mining gameplay on planet surface? exploration gameplay? not shot at the star... deployable mining structure????????????????????????????????????????????

is not a problem of time or of await... is a problem that FD have cancelled forever all that from the base game.

Yes i don't like that either, as i said many times i think they sacrifice time porting it to consoles, now that part is almost done so we will see how things going in season 3, i'll hold my wallet closed until something worth is released.
It's their product and money is ours, and i think they want our money so they'll have to deliver something that will sell good.

- Audio: deserves an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Cesar, a Golden Lion, a Golden Palm, etc.
- Flight model (SRV included)
- Modernizing original art (ships, cockpit, UI) and gamedesign
- Sense of scale and immersion
- Stellar Forge
- BGS, even if it's hard to grasp (*points at sense of scale*)
- Ed Lewis. Best community man ever: both genuinely dedicated and humble

Yep, all of this is top notch in Elite Dangerous. The sound and art especially, Elite has some of the best sound design I've ever seen in a video game. It's truly exceptional.

I just wish the actual game mechanics were up to the same standard, just imagine what that would be like!!!!

The galactic scale
Visuals and audio are world class
Great combat mechanics
Materials were a nice addition
The station voices are fantastic
The detail in planets and moons
Addition of faces to the stations
The amount of detail in the ships
Npc crew

Offline mode

Deep exploration mechanics

Phanter Clipper

Passenger missions which do not look anything like simple cargo

POIs completely interesting.

Great stuff to do with your own ship in planets surfaces without the mario kart.

Planets and stations procedurally created and completely different from each other.

NPCs persistents

NPCs audio chats(communications)

Lol

The forge, and backdrop, by far sterling achievements.

Just need bespoke instancing for challenging and different missions.. even if simply EvE style

How you can't fast travel or magically "beam" yourself around, making distance important, and providing a sense of awe about the scope of the galaxy.

Wish I could rep you a 100 times, why on earth do game developers undermine their own work by adding fast travel I will never understand.

The fact even in this game we constantly have to fight against developers from speeding up travel isn't a good sign.

The forum is filled with threads telling FD what's wrong with the game, but we all know it has some great features as well. If there's something you think is a clear stand out in the game, post a short description below. I suspect the dev's would value that feedback when considering the future content and direction of the game. :)

EDIT - I'm impressed, some really useful feedback so far. Rep to the OP's, you know who you are :D

- Sound (by far the best, except the soundtrack)
- Stellar forge (most beautiful space ever)
- Long time ingame targets
- Community management
- 4k-Performance
- VR
- no pay2win
- general space atmosphere

and so on...

Basically this.

The game design is kind of "meh", there's no two ways about it.

But.

The ships are a joy to fly, the sound design is awesome, the HUD is extremely well designed as well (wish we could change colors "properly" though [knocked out]), and they nailed this "new car smell" feeling when trying new ships.

Dogfighting is also extremely pleasant, even if some of the game design flaws are meddling with said pleasure (combat balance is just all over the place [noob]).

Agree with this 100%
