interesting email from FD

I think so, does it bother you?

Every time I load the game up now, I'm now sitting there looking at a Station Services menu, thinking...

"Do a mission? Meh."
"Go exploring again? Meh."
"Go out bounty hunting? Meh."
"Mining? Kill me now."
"Trading? Yeah really, where's my noose?"
"Pirating? Meh, not my bag."
"Go hunt for Volcanism! Um, meh - the thought of scouring a planet for hours and hours on end because only instrument is Mk.1 Eyeball? MEH!"
"Oh I know, I can go engineer the new iEagle and iClipper! *remembers how bothersome it was to engineer the Anaconda and Cutter* Frackin' MEH!"

And I realise that, apart from a fantastically implemented simulation of a galaxy, there's nothing which is compelling me to play the game anymore.

Being a small cog in a dead galaxy isn't very exciting.

It would save a lot of time if we could scan a planet to see the exact locations of materials and other points of interest.

If I were the suspicious type I'd think that was you being passive-aggressive. :) But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

There have been many suggestions on that particular subject - none of which mention that solution you did.

I think I speak for most when I say that's not what's needed or wanted - what's wanted would be some kind of heat map of potential areas of interest on a planet surface. Things like this have been suggested more than a few times - I remember some really nice mock-ups of what this would look like but I can't be Asp'ed looking for those threads. But they were awesome suggestions.

"with so much out there for you to discover and explore, there's no limit to what you might find."

AHhhhahahahahaaaahhhahaaahaaaaa! Good one! well jokes aside.. there is indeed "So much out there to explore" just not so much, if anything, out there to discover other than some nice looking visuals.

I think Frontier know this, and they also know how little of interest we would find.

Let's remember one of the reasons Frontier gave for cutting offline mode. Players would hack into the program and "discover the secrets of the galaxy" (Michael Brookes). As soon became apparent, the big secret of the galaxy was that there were no secrets of the galaxy... unless you count 400 billion boring randomly generated arrangements of coloured blobs.

From start they have said there is something in the black to find, no one never found anything. Then the rift. we got "confirmations" that something has been there since start and no one has found it. Well hole rift probably has no unvisited systems at this point and only stuff players found there was some surface settlements added in 2.2 (there were no planets at launch). Pretty much everything they have said about exploration content and stuff to find have been a lie when they have said it. And be stuff that is then added to the game in some patch 6-24 months later.

It's the truth.

not just save time, but actually make us to find something!

that is nice suggestion, i would change that for 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3
Well, after seeing a billion threads saying the same thing it kind of gets annoying
like itaki said; are you thread police? it is annoying to see you in every thread, if you don't like something "dont go there" btw this post is about EMAIL

"someone would hack and discover secrets of galaxy" at least someone would discover something, this way we dont discover anything until FD reveal secret and point us to certain system.

Man this is a harsh thread. I'm enjoying the game, granted I haven't been playing as long as some. I'm on my way to Beagle Point and yes I would say I would love to have more planetary features to find even if they're just procedurally generated ones. There is very little outside the bubble.

Still I can't be too harsh on Frontier, I think the game is still good and fun. Maybe I just have more of an imagination than others. I don't know.

Perhaps there are those type of people that when they were kids could play with a stick and rock for hours because of their imagination while others needed the latest, greatest mechanized toy for fun. :/

The phrase is not mine but it fits perfectly here

"Imagining" should not be a driving force in a game. I love Elite, but come on. To anybody looking to buy a game, the selling point shouldn't be "You can imagine yourself doing all these things". It should be "The game mechanics let you do all these things"

Not disagreeing with you, this is true. But patience is a virtue too. I think if they could they would. I'm guessing these programming things take time. But we all shouldn't be like...

I was doing a long super cruise run last night and was thinking there wasn't much to do in my ship.. I could have been doing things like scanning planets for anything interesting, modules like metal, organism scanners could be implemented..

Now you have to face the body you want to scan and you get not alot out of the scan.. If you didn't have to face something to scan it it would speed up the process and make it more viable to do on the fly.

Bottom line if people are switching over to youtube while doing a long run then the game is doing something wrong..

Ah.

I too got this email.

I'm presuming that Frontier sent me it because I've hardly if at all been playing the game in the last few months.

OP, when they're saying "explore", you have to take the whole of the message into context...

So Frontier isn't specifically talking about Exploration, they're talking about "exploration of the game as a whole".

Now. I've done the "Ally yourself with a faction"

I've done the "explore the deepest reaches of space"

I really, really DO NOT CARE about "crush your enemies"

And as far as "build your fortune" goes, I think I've got about 750 million credits in total assets - I'd load the game to check on that but I can't really be Asp'ed to do so.

Every time I load the game up now, I'm now sitting there looking at a Station Services menu, thinking...

So yes, Frontier. Thank you very much for sending me an email asking me to come back, but, for now, I think I'll pass on that. Unless and until you start making the game actually interesting and compelling, I don't think I'll be clocking up many more minutes, let alone hours, in this game.

About that whole picture, since it is mail that ask player to return to game and since all that you can discover(mehanics, content and variety of missions) can be done in few hours they must be thinking about something else we are not aware of.....a bit of sarcasam in it!

To develop scanner should take less time than create holo-me.
One will be used all the time, other once or twice!

I received the same yeti-hunting e-mail. I had been away from the game for most of March, involuntarily, due to taking an interstate holiday into regions with little or no internets. I had enough trouble getting the forum to load properly, never mind ED. I don't even have the game installed on the old laptop I had taken with me.

Ironically, they'd sent the e-mail to me after I'd already been back for two days and had been playing the game. Apparently, I still fell into the "yeti" category to be sent that e-mail.

And I'm thinking, wouldn't it have been more effective if they'd sent it after the next update, when there actually will be new content for the yetis to "explore"? Because, if I really had gone yeti a month ago and received that e-mail, I'd probably be thinking "All right, they've got a new update with more stuff", gone to check it out... and been disappointed on finding that everything was still exactly the same as it was a month ago.

When i was a kid i disassembled every toy and play with it's parts (mostly electric cars), making new things from it (electric motor or such). So tools and mehanics are needed beside good imagination. It can bring imagination on whole new level.

Even if Frontier has hand placed and hidden a few “things” to find out in deep space, that’s not going to do anything to fix what is wrong with exploration in Elite.

Exploration needs interactive and engaging mechanics, and content to take advantage of said mechanics. The current game loop of HONK followed by “point your ship at the planet while you wait for the wheel to spin” isn’t interactive nor engaging, nor does it enable much of any player decisions or actions. Exploration needs gameplay.

I do find that email humorous though. Is it possible the marketing department has no idea just how barebones the exploration game truly is? [big grin]

Pointing your ship at a star and pressing honk is not exploring.

Go view the galaxy from all over and then you are talking exploration and Fdev have given us a virtual galaxy to do that in.

If you are doing the Honk loop then you are not exploring.

Finding something interesting and there's plenty of it is exploration with reward.
