SRV Ideas- the Scorpion and Hornet (I have put ALOT of thought into this)

I have been thinking on this for a very long time... time to expand the SRVs for Elite. as you know there is only one option so far- the Scarab. in keeping with the insect naming of the vehicle I have thought of two tailored designs for more specific roles. Really it is frontiers job to name them but for intensive purposes I will call them the Hornet and Scorpion.

The Hornet-

An extremely combat biased SRV. with;
-double the cruise speed of the scarab,
-1/3 fuel capacity,
-rear mounted booster, capable of accelerating up to 4 times the speed of the scarab!! use with caution as any impact at these speeds will result in destruction of vehicle.
-Light shields and armour,
-6 plasma repeaters (4 forward gimballed and 2 turreted) each with 1/4 of standard ammo capacity (250 rounds per gun)
-rear mounted cargo scoop (forces collection of materials and cargo to be done in reverse, a creative and unique aspect as it is not designed for cargo)
-1 cargo rack space

These aspects make the Hornet a ferocious combat vehicle capable of high speeds and delivering a very potent sting (pun intended :) ) with major drawbacks in range, and ammo you will find yourself retuning to ship often. the poor capacity and rear mounted cargo scoop also make it inadequate for long range cargo and material collection. the light armour significantly reduces integrity. it can give a hit but can't take one (Strictly for game balancing). Using the vehicle for 'hit and run' tactics is advisable. due to most of it's firepower being forward focused. the operator would have to literally drive into the target to achieve maximum damage.

My suggested appearance of the Hornet is a long, low profile vehicle with forward swept front wheels. (imagine the modern Bat mobile but thinner :) ) the canopy is compressed to make it more streamline, although almost completely pointless on almost none atmospheric planets it would still look pretty cool.

The Scorpion

A cargo and material collection vehicle with;

-up to 8 internal racks for cargo making significantly fewer trips to ship.
-1/3 of total speed of scarab
-4 times the total fuel range
-heavy armour and shielding for taking heavy flak as well as wear and tear of long range travel...a true survivor!!
- a special turreted rail gun for taking out outcrops in a single blast. slow reload and rate of fire but high damage otherwise.
-scoped turret view with recoil supports (upon entering turret view zoom will enhance as well as the vehicle grounding itself to increase accuracy and reduce recoil. just like the Cobra in Halo wars hehe :) )

these aspects make the Scorpion a long range surface prospecting vehicle with an absolutely ideal cargo capacity allowing for 1-2 trips to ship to clear a whole crash site of its cargo. the rail gun allows for quick destruction of outcrops. for negating hostiles it can pick them off at a distance with its telescopic site. however in doing so the vehicle is completely stationary and an easy target. the rail gun's rate of fire makes it effective only against 1-2 opponents. any more and it would easily be overwhelmed. the vehicles heavy armour will allow it to take hits as well as shrug off some of the damage sustained through impacts.

My suggested appearance of this vehicle is to be a flat, wide multi wheeled brick of a SRV. with standard cockpit shape as the Scarab.

all and all. these vehicles are tailored around specific purposes. the SRV Scarab is still the efficient multi role and is by far not obsolete with these vehicles.

Just ideas but what do you think...could you see yourself using one of these in the future?! :D

+1

Diversified SRVs imo will be implemented for sure in the (hopefully not so distant) future.

May I suggest at least one variant: you started introducing
The Hornet-
An extremely combat biased SRV
and then described an estremely fast, agile & fragile asset. Which may be cool, but I'd not define it combat-biased, rather a fast recon and scouting veichle.
I'd introduce, as a complement, the [YOU PICK THE INSECT NAME], a bit slower but heavilly armored, capable of delivering a decent punch, no (or just 1) cargo space. Suitable for base assault and land combat.

Though I might disagree with specific details in your proposal, I 100% agree with the underlying sentiment-namely that we need more mission specific SRV types, that have different benefits & drawbacks as a result. I'd also like to see a Passenger Transport & Mining variant at some point down the track.

You both have very valid points :)

I think I may of overcompensated for weaknesses eh? Zan your idea sounds awesome! see if you can work on it and send the idea. who knows, it could be the future of elite! :)

Now that's a different and good approach, surface transport of passengers and surface mining. the planets are made of valuable resources, could be a nice additional alternative to mining asteroids for many long and tedious hours haha. as for passenger transport I suppose additional missions could be a nice touch. I'd like to see you post that some time, Im interested to see the specs haha :)

see if you can work on it and send the idea.

Will do mate... it'll take some time though. Have a look at the link in my signature: that's a rough index of ideas I'd like to develop and present better, in dedicated posts; maybe I'll manage. In time. Cruel society still insists on the fact I have to work for a living, and that's slowing me down.
