Hardware & Technical Making room

EDLaunch occupies 22Gb on my C: drive, which is ±1/5 of the puny 110Gb disc's capacity. I'd like to move it to my D: drive (1Tb cap, 700Gb free), where I've been installing stuff for a while so as to leave C: for things that refuse to live anywhere else.

Is it simply a case of completely uninstalling ED, and then reinstalling it to D:? Are there any pitfalls that I need to know how to deal with?

Grateful for any guidance, please.

I've been using the Steam version for a while now, and I believe there is a way to move it within the client itself, but last time I tried I just downloaded the whole game again. If you are using a standalone version, I would probably try copying the existing installation to your new location. Uninstalling, then reinstalling to the new location so the paths/icons etc are updated in Windows. Hopefully it will pick up the existing installation and minimize your downloads.

Thanks for your reply, Aussiedroid.

I have the standalone version, i.e., not Steam.

I have beta access but I'm going to wait for Commanders to be fully released, and then I intend to uninstall ED in its current incarnation on my PC, and then install Commanders, this time to D: -- unless anyone else has any suggestions or warnings?

Don't forget to copy your option folders first so you don't have to redo your bindings etc.

Thanks SMcA.

After I've copied those folfers, and uninstalled ED, where do I find what I need, to reinstall? I'd kinda like to keep my version of ED as a standalone.

You are putting me on the spot.

Firstly what do you mean by "I'd kinda like to keep my version of ED as a standalone."?

What version of windoze are you using? I'm only using Win7. And as far as I know the location of the option files are determined during installation. So if you specify the game to be installed on a secondary drive. The installer will probably put the option files back in your user folders. You can then copy your original files over the new ones after taking a copy, of course. :p

I just checked the size of my Frontier Program directory. And you will save 32 gigs on your C: drive.
But before you do it. Check your disc access times and speed. You don't want to be loading Elite from a slower disc. I wouldn't go from a SSD to a HDD. And if you are going to transfer a lot of data. Do a defrag of your secondary disk first.

I believe this does not get deleted when you uninstall. Doesn't hurt to make a copy though :)

After install would just need to copy it back to the same location (if deleted). Not aware if you can move this folder, but its very small at any rate.

It sometimes gets overwritten on upgrades. Or it did, not so much nowadays.

(See FD have been working in the background listening to the complaints and fixing things.)

And it is a good idea to have a copy in case you change something and can't remember where it lives in the menu. The options menu in the Beta is even longer.
