It had to happen sooner or later - my first PvP encounter

(Title should end with 'my first PvP encounter'. Not sure what happened there. I blame the iPad. Any mods around that could tweak it?)

I've been running missions out of Bluford Orbital in LHS 3447, just gaining cash and Fed rank. I've gotten used to seeing the occasional hollow square and sending out a greeting, sometime getting one in return. It was nice. It was pleasant. It was civilised.

I'd become complacent.

Returning last night, holds empty, I jumped back into LHS 3447, scooped, and altered course for the Orbital. I saw a few more hollows than normal and idly cycled through them, expecting the usual mix of Sideys and Cobras.

A Federal Corvette.

"Hmmmm," thinks I, "Ok. Nothing to be alarmed about. I've traded greetings with Anacondas before, and a Corvette is just a sort of Anaconda++, right?"

Right. Also wrong.

Three things I noticed in quick succession: He was wanted. He was in a wing. And he was altering course towards me. I mentally filed these facts under "not good".

Being the cautious sort of chap I am I dialled up a local star, just in case things didn't quite go as cordially as I was hoping...

Interdiction.

Submit. Pips to engines. Boost. Boost. Boost!

"Leave system" comes over the comms, as my shields were taking a hammering.

"Suits me," I think. So I jump to my safe system.

But I'm not leaving it at that. Bluford is my home, dammit, and I'm not going to be blocked from it by some peckerhead in a flying extension.

Scoop. Recharge shields.

Jump.

Scoop again. Check out the local area. Seems quiet enough, so I can either do this quietly, or...

[To LOCAL]: I'm baaaaaack!

Ok, that was childish but I'm like that sometimes. I knew this had a really, really good chance of going pear-shaped, but I never fly without rebuy and besides, I'm curious.

Sure enough, CMDR Bawbag (not his real name) shows up again, but I've actually made it most of the way to Bluford, so I might just be able to...no.

Interdiction.

Submit. Pips. Boosty boosty boost boost, try to low-wake. Can't. Mass locked.

"Oh dear," I thought (or words to that effect).

Shields low. Gaining some distance from him, but still not quite enough for the FSD to do the low-wake boogie.

Shields offline. Hull taking damage.

"This is turning out distinctly sub-optimal," I think, or, again, words to that effect.

"Leave system". Not this time, laddie.

Hull down to 49% and the FSD finally gets its act together and low-wakes me out.

I burn space to Bluford and crash-stop, luckily timing it right. I have rarely been so pleased to see the place.

But it's not quite over.

Submit docking request. Throttle back. Docking computer takes over. I sit back and start to relax, and idly take a look around.

Hollow square.

In front of me.

Blocking the entrance.

CMDR Bawbag's friend, CMDR Numpty (also not his real name) in an FAS and, I think, trying to make me do something that the Station would blow me out of space for.

So I take over from the docking computer and execute a rather nifty little dip and roll, going under CMDR Numpty's hull, slight clash of shields and...I'm in.

[To CMDR Numpty]: Idiot.

So, that was it. My first PvP encounter, provided you count repeated "Brave Sir Robin" manoeuvres as PvP.

PvP is still something I don't want, but I have to admit that Holy Balls it was exhilarating.

Post mortem:

Things I did right:
Submitting. Boosting. Having a high-wake option on speed dial. Getting lucky on the crash-stop.

Things I did wrong:
Forgetting I had chaff that I could have deployed. Not even attempting FA off.

Yo made it. So no other reflections needed really, evading FAS and 'Vette in "Ganknam mode" is cool enough :)
Ejoy that CMDR's Bawbag and Numpty were probably shimmering, that the baby seal evaded :D Ohh the tears you harvested there :) Just have in mind, they will remember you. Especially now :)
You should just posted Vid, and we would know ;)

Cheers Cmdr's

I'm pretty sure I watched this I've on twitch, good flying cmdr. It is what it is.

Seriously?! That would be awesome if so. Is it available anywhere?

(to put a timescale on it, this was around 10PM in the UK, or just a wee bit before)

To whoever tweaked the title back to what it should have been: thank you.

Well played Cmdr. As long as we don't give the gankers what they want and manage to continue about our own (usually) lawful ways , they lose. Well they lose anyway because they are all losers, but you get what I mean .

I enjoyed the story. I'm not a PvPer but I do enjoy random encounters with other players ... even when they go a little sideways.

There are some overprotective players in LHS 3447 that try and chase anybody who doesn't fit the "noob" profile out of the system to protect beginners. It could be that you ran into some of these guys who, seeing you in your Python, mistook you from someone hunting Sidewinders.

Could be, but I don't think so. This just felt like a straight-up murderer wannabe.

I was less lucky. About a week ago, I went to Wyrd in my Asp Scout. Noticed a CMDR Clipper getting behind me, and before I knew it, I was being fished out of supercruise.

Pips to engines, boosted... BHAM! Shields (class 4 bi-weave w. lvl 1 thermal & lvl 1 heavy-duty booster) gone, with hull down to 51%.

Before I could do anything, he fired again, and that was that. 😨

I was using my alternate account, and was competent. He was elite.

About as interesting a "fight" as tackling an M1 Abrams with a can opener. 😂

Still, I learned a lot. Sold the Asp Scout and outfitted a nice Vulture. Next time, I'll fight the interdiction...

Ha, good one. Repped :D

I don't judge fair PvP on Elite, but straight bullying like that is something that I kinda frown upon. Still, it's something to make open interesting and it giving a chance for some people to be a hero, which some will people definitely go for, makes it pretty satisfying.

I do admire your restraint, Cmdr.

I would have been so tempted to sit in the NFZ doing nothing for a minute or two, then if Numpty didn't move dock in Solo mode then relog to open and taunt him from the safety of the docking pad.

On a more constructive note, there were some additional things that MAY have made a difference.

Soon as Bawbag started altering course towards you, max your throttle and fly at right angles to the plane of the system as close to directly away from him as you can. Unless he's already close enough to be in interdiction range he will find it very hard to interdict you since you will be further out in the gravity well than he is and therefore accelerating faster then he can.Once he drops off your scanner you'll be at an almost Hutton-like distance from your destination but you can navigate around the peripheries of the system and come back in from a more advantageous vector. Drag it out as long as you can - for as long as he's spending his time on a futile attempt to catch you, he's not bothering anyone else. As an added bonus, when he puts in all that effort and STILL fails, he's going to be even saltier. If you're really lucky, you can make him chase you far enough away from the center of the system that if you make sure he's seen you outrunning him and falling off his scans in SC then pull a fast highwake-out, cooldown, highwake-back you'll reappear at the arrival point well before he's back anywhere near it. Of course, this depends on you giving him a bad enough case of buck fever that he'll continue to chase you after you've fallen off his scanners, not realizing that you pulled this maneuver. A few monty python quotes in an outrageous french accent (you know the ones I mean) over the comms might help in this regard. I've got a few canned lines on macros like "Yo momma so fat, they call her 'Annie' for the smallest ship that will take her as a passenger" that do a fairly satisfactory job of getting under their skin too.

Fight the interdictions, only submitting when it's obvious you're not going to win. Your aim is to take every chance you can to dump him but submit before losing so that you still don't end up with a long cooldown.

Nice story and nice moves.

Not sure there was a need to scoop the second time; as every second counts.

The DC should have taken you in and if you hit him on the way in; the DC makes you immune to any penalties. At the same time, the DC can have a issues when other real players are not following entry protocol and it will 'wait', so leaving you exposed.

Lol great story!

:)

I pulled a similar manoeuvre back in my nooby Python days.
Had some numpty in a battle Conda Interdict my shiny new C-D rated Python.
Back then, i had no clue what a high wake was.
After fighting the Interdiction, and losing (didn't know to submit either), i then proceeded to have the most boring PvP encounter I'd ever had.

I boosted and flew away, while charging my painfully slow FSD, and he followed, taking pot shots. I was only just out running him, but he chased me for what felt like days, at a steady 300m/s or something. In a straight line.
I eventually lost shields, and then quite a bit of hull.
Then my FSD finally charged and i jumped out at 6% hull. Lol

I then immediately stopped, dropped back out of supercruise, and jumped to the next system for much needed repairs.
Lol

That was in LTT 17522 or something. It's not far from LHS 3447.

CMDR Cosmic Spacehead

Not my idea of fun (sounds like you did though), but different folks different strokes. These 'examples' just re-enforce my reasoning for staying out of Open.

Good job evading.

I still don't get the idea behind the whole "noob-space hunting" tho... A 'vette and a FAS in LHS 3447 or Eravate seems just a way to either show off (look at my biiiig ship, you pathetic sideys!) or just cuz no balls to go shoot better pilots...

I am often in those systems these days (well, not lately since I gotta find stuff for premium ammo first :p) but just add me

CMDR Hellfire85

And I'll take a pleasure in hunting down those wannabe-badasses (whoever want's to join me is welcome. there's no such thing as too much firepower :D)
