Decided to get off the fence

Greeting Commanders,

For a few months now I have been been unable to decide if I was going to go the TrackIR route or OR route.

Well I bit the bullet after deciding this particular solution would suit my situation better, and I am so glad I did.....

TrackIR adds such a different dimension (literally) to ED, I cannot even put in to words how immersed it made me feel playing ED (more so since I have played since the Alpha!).

Cannot wait to see the Beta and marvel at what TrackIR brings to the game. If you haven't already I would seriously consider, no scratch that - just go out and buy some sort of headtracking now!

P.S sadly I was only able to agree a 5% commission from Natural Point, hence my use of head tracking and not TrackIR :p

I saw TrackIR demoed on youtube, and it does sound intriguing. So you don't feel looking out the corner of your eye is strange?

Does it impact in-game fps? How much does it cost? Any issues with it?

ahh so you bought the wrong device and need to justify why

[redacted]

lol wut? I feel like reporting you, and that's saying something...

Totally different technologies. Some like mature tech and 4K screens, some like prototype VR.

It's a snazzy thing, innit, OP? :D

I could never go back to play games without it now. Indeed, I sometimes try to look around in games that does not support it...

Can't speak for E:D (I'm not in until Standard Beta/Beta 1), but other games where I use it I never notice any frame drop.

And you can tweak how far you need to turn your head, so no need to go for the corner of the eyes, Boo... Er, I mean, no need to look out of the very corner of your eye, no. :)

Is it about $150 these days? Been a few years for me now...

*cough* EDTracker *cough* £25 *ahem*

Works a treat! Very helpful bunch of guys developing it specifically for E: D. See other forum threads.

I play DCS (Digital Combat Simulator) with TrackIR. Playing without it would be unthinkable for me, now. In fact for anyone serious about that sim it has become almost mandatory. That's how great it is. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to use it in ED, although the game is not as demanding. And, again, can't play without it now.

To answer your questions: the very first seconds are kind of strange, but in a good way. Right after that, it's a blast. You'll find yourself moving your head very naturally, and it will become an extension of yourself. Immersion is so much better with that thing.

No, it does not impact FPS. At least nothing noticeable. It's more or less a additional control input, like a mouse with a Z axis.

Cost could be significant, depending on your budget. 150 euros for the normal version, to which you can add 50 euros if you want the official pro clip thingy.

Issues, yes. Mainly, the regular version come shipped with reflectors. It's a bit crude, but efficient most of the time. Just don't play with a light source behind you. The pro clip is based on diods, and is likely to solve that problem, as well as being a bit more precise. Another big issue: the rig you'll have to put on your head won't make you look sexy at all. Don't use near your GF/wife.

I use trackir with 3d, it looks amazing, so much easier to just look at your control panels then having to select.

Sometimes when I play other games with no TrackIR support, I find myself tilting my head expecting the screen to move

I have been using TiR for years in flight sims and recently upgraded my venerable 3Pro version to a TiR5. The latest version is £150 with a Pro clip (LED's) and compared to other hardware is cheap. It has been around for donkeys and in its latest form works so well if you watch a YT clip of someone else flying you automatically start moving your head,it becomes that natural to use.

It's a game changer and going back to flying without it would be a no no for me. If you are using the reflective dots on a clip you look like an asbo award nominee but as I use a headset virtually all the time the Led Trackclip is barely noticeable.

I have watched the OR stuff with interest but it seems to me that as a technology it has years of development ahead of it, it needs proper expensive (we are talking divorce level) hardware to get it to work properly and makes you look like one of Ming's goons of Flash Gordon when in use. It is something I will keep an eye on for future consideration when it is a few generations ahead and when bleeding edge hardware is not a requirement to get the best out of it.

IMO TrackIR is more important than a HOTAS if you already have a regular joystick.
Attaining situational awareness gets so much easier which makes any manoeuvring including landing easier and in combat is obviously a huge advantage because you can keep your eyes on your target without letting go of other important controls.

TrackIR Vs Oculus Rift is like comparing perfectly serviceable apples against golden awesome oranges that taste of heaven.

I've tried both and while headtracking is OK IMO, VR is quite different and jawdroppingly awesome. Soon as you try it you'll be a believer.

I have to say having strapped an OR on this weekend at Lavecon I can't really disagree with this.

I have trackIR and it is great - when I'm playing without it - sometimes if the sun suddenly comes out and I CBA to pull the curtains - I really miss it.

But - putting the OR on - even with the rubbish resolution of the DK1 - it was just extraordinary.

The difference is incredible - but then they aren't really comparable at all.

TrackIR will do me for the time being - will wait for OR release - if that takes too long maybe DK2...
