2.3 Shield Booster Nerf - Did It Happen?

Did FD go ahead and nerf the shield boosters like they were talking about for the 2.3 release or did they table the idea?

Cancelled. Will be changed differently in some future.

Hello Commanders!

First things first, we’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to these balance tweaks that we have been running. Whether creating videos, giving testament to game play experience or making considered observations – your input is greatly appreciated, regardless which side of the fence you stand on.

By trialling out tweaks to shield booster diminishing returns changes for an extended period, we’ve amassed more feedback than we could have obtained from a single beta. Now we’ve had a chance to go through it all, matching it up against our own thoughts and experiences.

We believe there is a real issue where stacking shield boosters can become a path of least resistance in terms of ship defence and we’re committed to resolving it.

However, after taking the feedback into consideration, we feel that the tweaks we’ve tested are not the best way to address the different (sometimes conflicting) issues in play, in part because of the wide variety of play styles that Elite Dangerous caters to. That’s not to say that we think the changes didn’t address the issues of ships with overly powerful shields, just that the changes were a little too specific.

We feel that alongside any changes to shields, we want to look at complimentary changes, to mitigate various valid concerns that have been raised, such as wing-based combat and extended conflict zone play. So we’re going to step back and take another look at the issue in a holistic manner.

Thank you once again, for all the testing, and for your continued support. We will return to this issue, we’re still confident that, with your help, we can resolve this issue and improve the game combat experience.

When I was first unlocking Felicity I did some shield booster mods and got normally 25% boost (if thst is the right term) plus up to about 5% enhancement for the three damage types. Lately I decided to try to bolster my new(ish) commander's trade ships defences and the most I could get was 20% and 3% respectively. I am not referring to the 2.3 beta here but the live game.

My old commander's boosters still have the higher figures so basically anyone coming in after whatever they did is at a disadvantage compared to any engineered-up "oldboys".

Just another example of how "Engineers" to me is detrimental to the game, but that is just my non-pew-pew viewpoint (so it doesn't count).

On the subject of what has been nerfed, am I right in saying that mission stacking being limited to three is only for skimmers or combat? So someone could still take up to 20 data deliveries? Or did I get that wrong?

Thankfully shield boosters aren't nerfed yet since they couldn't find a decent way to protect modules... but is the hull increase for the Big Three going into effect still or no?

Lol this is awesome.

Did the big 3 still get their hull buff?

We don't know at all. They said the buffs and nerfs will be rolled back. No one knows which they mean like will they roll back the buffs made in 2.2.03 because those were made in situation were shield boosters were going to be nerfed?

Yup. :) After six months and 10 betas noone knows if the hull will be 3x as strong or not, and if shield regen will stay etc. Classic example of top-qualityt FD communication. :)

I do believe that nerfing the attainable resistances, not the total MJ of the boosters would have been an effective choice instead. Perhaps they will attempt something along those lines later. It became apparent immediately that the aspect they were nerfing had pretty much no impact at all on most RNG'd ships. This represents some lost programming time but at least they listened to the players and testers this time.

Resistances have already been nerfed. And then nerfed again, when they made PAs ignore them.

Nope. Both boosters and hull changes are cancelled.

Resists got a miniscule amount of nerf (a couple of % at G5 resistance-augmented boosters). I'm not even sure if anyone noticed that...

Only skimmers, combat and surface scan missions are being limited to three.

I usually go 4 boosters gaining 20% each with an additional 5-6% gain in explosive, kinetic and thermal. As I'm not into serious PvP that works pretty well for me. Since the booster nerf did not start until better than 80% combined it would not change this setup.
