Given what you said before about rather strong ideas on work and benefits coming from some corners (I think the Nationalists?), that sounds like a victory for social cohesion and progress. Common sense - refreshing.

I suspect we've probably seen the worst of the populist nationalism trend in Europe, at least for now. In too many places they have been seen to be even more incompetent and corrupt than the 'mainstream' politicians they have striven to replace, and the mess over Brexit has shown that the petty nationalism they promote has significant drawbacks. It is easy enough to engage in rabble-rousing appeals to the lowest common denominator as long as you aren't actually responsible for making any decisions. The current mess in the U.S. probably doesn't help the cause either: lots of in-fighting, and not much in the way of actual leadership. Oh, and the faint chance of the President actually talking the country into a war with a nuclear-armed opponent...

There's likely to be follow-up drama this summer. Timo Soini, the populist leader of the "Finns" decided not to run for another term as party leader rather than face an election challenge. The likeliest winner is a hard line racist, who will make it very hard for the coalition partners to keep working with them.

I'm hoping that Finland's 100th year of independence gift is that of early elections.

Brexit and Trump did their work good at showing people that Nationalists are Nutjobs....
