Ship Name Profanity Filter is Too Strict?

What did you expect from FD's five dollar profanity filter? XD
Should be fun to watch as people figure out how to get around it (it's not hard), and FD's response to people getting around it.

Profanity filters are difficult. You wouldn't know though.

For me I'm not quite sure why they're bothering. It's not like it's a comment forum or anything. Just rely on community reports and deal with evasions that way.

And don't be so strict about it, I mean the ED community does love its euphemisms. So many CMDR names like this, I just don't think it's worth worrying about.

Just go for the genuinely offensive ones and let the community feed back about it.

That's a pity. I was hoping they would be more sensible with the filter.

It's completely impossible for anything short of human review to prevent somebody from getting a message past the filter. And the people trying to get those messages past the filter don't care about it looking a bit weird as a consequence of obfuscation. Making it this strict only ends up hurting people trying to use legitimate names. The workload on Support (assuming they are going to end up handling it) would be no greater if the filter only blocked the most blatant profanity.

Of course, in an ideal world people wouldn't feel the need to be protected from seeing something which offends them and none of this would be necessary.

I think it was in the last-but-one Call Of Duty game, I tried naming one of my class setups 'assault' because it contained an assault rifle but the game wouldn't let me do it. This was on a screen that nobody else in the entire world would ever see.

The funny thing is, it would have been easier and more accepted to either make the filter client side with an opt out or better, an editable filter, or just enhance the ignore feature to blank out particular player's names when you see them. To take this approach and try to censor everything is just inviting hostility and workarounds. And it's not like the player names are even filtered like this, I've seen a lot of stuff in the game's history that should have been obvious.

Wondering if letters like " ø æ ö ğ ü ş ı ç ä å é " are able to be used in ship names? And to bypass the filter system and get pulled over by the internet police. I'm certain I've seen a couple of loud npcs with those letters out there.

Okay, I'll change it back now! :x :D

Friend of mine got into trouble at work for allegedly looking at . The site in question turned out to be Sussex Life.

^ Good grief, it censored that! Um - "allegedly looking at, er, nudity"?

coo, what did they used the very first word filter that existed int he IT? on which floppy did they found that one before they implemented it. Was that then even tested? Sure some peopel say we ran't easily, but I see FD doing the most basic mistakes which questions simply what they do. Shouldn't they operate and develop on more professional level givign some more decent results?

And before you know it, those bewildered, frightened sheep's will burn you at a stake.

yeh between slavery, beeing called scum and drugs you are surely not supposed to call your ship after a rather common lower end body part. now which of those 4 things is the biggest issue?

Can't say "And", that might offend indecisive people. Also, some people are concerned about starting a sentence with "And".
Can't say "before", that might offend people who are insecure about their age.
Can't say "you", that's pointed and personal.
Can't say "know", that might offend thickies.
Can't say "it", I'm sure we have many other impersonal pronouns that are less denigrating.
Can't say "those", that could offend groups who don't want to be seen as "the other".
Can't say "bewildered", that might offend people who are easily confused.
Can't say "frightened", that might offend people who are easily startled.
Can't say "sheep's", that might offend people who are offended by the misuse of apostrophes and the misunderstanding of plurals, and could upset vegetarians.
Can't say "will", that might offend indecisive people. Again.
Can't say "burn", that might offend people who have "Byrne" as their surname.
Can't say "you", that's too direct and second-person.
Can't say "at", that's will offend people who hate the sterotyping of ebonics.
Can't say "a", that will offend people who are currently undergoing primary education by patronising their limited understanding of reading.
Can't say "stake", sounds like "steak" and that might offend vegetarians.

So what you meant to say is in fact:

Much better!
