Oculus or Vive? which is better fo elite?

Hello there fellow commanders!

I have been trying to decide on what VR headset to purchase. currently I am leaning towards a Vive due to weight and field of view (according to comparison websites these were the dominant features) But which is truly better? also apparently Vive only operates with Steam. I don't have steam, I bought Elite as a Direct download. Is it possible to transfer an elite account to steam??

Can anyone provide any advice or pros and cons on the matter? I would greatly appreciate it!! :)

Thank you for your time :)

Pretty sure they both weigh the same now, Vive has higher field of view, Rift slightly better optics (since Elite consists of staring into the infinite distance this makes a bigger difference than in most other games). Vive is better for room scale, Rift for cockpit style games (I know they've improved their roomscale tracking but it still requires a USB port for each sensor plus extension cables for the headset), plus, probably, a USB expansion card so they all play nice with each other.

I bought my Rift (dislike Facebook, distrust Oculus) solely for Elite, the other stuff is a fun distraction - the games I'm a want to play (when I can drag myself away from flying a spaceship:)); Mass Effect A, Deus Ex New, Watch Dogs 2 don't do VR (and I've still to finish Dying Light - the best zombie / parkour game ever).

I own both headsets and these days only use the Rift. I play Elite almost exclusively and (for me) it is just more comfortable over a longer period of time. I also got custom lenses made for it so I don't have to wear my glasses - that also really helps.
They are both awesome pieces of kit but the Rift is just slicker all round IMO, though there's not much in it.

You can get a steam key generated by accessing your Frontier account, if you go with the vive.

Whichever you choose, you won't be disappointed - VR is the only way to play this game! :)

For Elite the Rift is better no doubt.

For room scale, if you have 3 cameras both are largely equivalent once set up,

BUT there are more wires on the rift and it really pushes your usb to the limit with 3 cameras so here the vive is a much more elegant solution imo (I ended up buying a usb 3 pci card to take some of the load which is not ideal. this may be fixed now i dunno.

(of course for elite you do not need touch and 1 camera is enough.... but for the price, there are some fab motion control games now so i would say a full system is worth it anyway.

Vive has slightly larger FOV
rift has slightly better clarity

rift has imo better motion controllers (tho it depends what you are doing with them
rift without doubt has the better software, both in terms of the VR software to buy (oculus funded titles) and the software which drives the rift (ASW etc) tho revive allows you to play most oculus software on the vive.

but the vive is catching up. on that last point.

IF you wear glasses, unless they are little harry potter like ones the rift is a PITA!. mine are hardly big but i cant use the rift with them. luckily i have contact lenses.
IF this is an issue for you, your answer is quite simple, the vive is a better choice unless you are prepared to buy 3rd party stuff for the rift.

I chose the rift and do not regret it, my mate chose the vive and does not regret it. imo there are no losers in this game, both are superb.

Elite works in vr on both the rift and the vive without buying through steam (there was a time the oculus store version had problems on the vive iirc, that may be fixed now but it is not an issue for you)

you will need a steam account to get steamVR, but its free to get.... and you would need this anyway even if you get a rift for the oculus rift supported stuff on steam.

Exactly the same here, to be fair I got my Vive before the weight reduction so that may play a part but the Rift is just so much neater at the player end.

I would say head shape also plays a part so if you have the chance to try both before you buy do so.

I got the Rift, mainly because it was a cheaper point of entry, even more so with the recent price drops. If proper room scale is important, get the Vive, otherwise I'd have to get the Rift again, just taking into account the price difference. As other have said, you won't go wrong with either, the only important decision is taking the leap into VR.

I went with the Rift from the start, so have nothing to compare it to. Got to say though I'm amazed by ED experience in VR. Use it almost exclusively for ED only. Although I've just tried Robo Recall because of the wait for 2.3 to drop.... And that's amazing as well!

I got the pimax 4k. $350 for an infinitely better screen, even though it has occasional drift, it's not that bad and you can just map recenter button, but i've had to play without it for the past few days and it's not been an issue.

Well, you guys got me sold...Rift it is! :)

thank you very much for your support!

welcome :)

rift or vive, VR is ace - for most of us. a few don't get on with it but we can burn those heretics :D

there is a recommended games list for VR somewhere.. I need to update and add a few recent goldies. (hint doom 3 BFG is one, )

I wouldn't mind giving it a go but cant imagine I would get on well without full 6DOF
