Ship Name Profanity Filter is Too Strict?

My IMO probably not-obscenely named Imperial Cutter, the CNV EMBASSY, appears on other player's UIs as the "CNVEMB***Y"..

I guess it thought I was referring to bottoms, and not to diplomatic things. Sigh.

Any chance FD of toning down the swear filter there? It's also truncating the space between "CNV" and "Embassy" parts of the name, which is annoying.

Cheers

The next time anyone so much as hints at a comparison between this and GTA5...

The harder something is censored, the worse the profanity will be when players find ways around it...or just go into full rebellion mode and make it as intentionally offensive as possible...

Thats what always happens when ye apply restrictions that are deemed too restrictive ^

Hehe... looks like the *****sment (a.k.a. Assessment) of the situation points to an awkward issue ;)

Anyway, I always find it weird when a Game basically permits (and through Teasers/Ads) glorifies Death & Violence, incl. Drugs and Slavery - but at the same time goes "Orwellian Newspeak" to avoid foul words by Standards usually associated only with an Elementary school or a Kindergarden.

It's a weird, weird world we're living in.
Go kill everything that lives? Absolutely fine. Do it in style and with a nice Video-edit - you might even get a mentioning in an official Newsletter. But dare say or write a "wrong" word... you're censored and/or roasted.
Definitely messed up in my books. But primarily that's a legal issue (Rating), so they likely don't have much flexibility or choice on the matter.

It's an American Puritan thing I guess...

Things that destroy life : good (murder, slavery etc... )
Things that create/improve life : bad (sex, communication, fun...)

Speak not of sex, for it might lead to dancing!

===

Anyway, I thought an **alternative word for a donkey redacted** was an animal... I wonder if we could call a beluga "bumper" (cos it does contain "bum").

As a person who very, very rarely swears and believes it`s better not to be grossly rude, i am totally AGAINST this politically correct snowflaky rubbish, `mustn`t offend` stuff. It`s really stupid.

What`s the point giving the people the freedom to customise their ships and names then draconially censoring almost everything in an attempt not to `offend`. you will ALWAYS offend someone. just being born will offend someone!

Devs, and other game companies, grow some bravery and commonsense. Stop mothering everyone.

Hm, forgot...

Maybe the thing I'm missing is this : Game feedback based on Naming given.

That way, at least you'd know if there was something unexpectedly wrong. And you could see the result it would otherwise produce to another Player... then maybe find an alternative or workaround.

We should now really have a contest for using the most creative dirty words from any living or dead language ever existed.

Introducing the SS Mentula Magna...

It's a PEGI7! That means seven year olds can play - like it or not. I think they need to be mothered, no?

You are suggesting to change the rating?

That word isn`t even a swear word. It`s an animal, of the donkey kind. The Americans got it wrong. The British actually say it right, it`s [CENSORED]

I get it...why? simple, because a ton of people will try to work out 'clever' ways to get around the filter anyway, so hard blocking, is one way to prevent that.
Could it have a dictionary and not block combinations that are in there that aren't profanity, yup, sure, but I get it.

Course the flipside with filters like this is that rather then really block, it empathises a word when it blocks things that are part of a whole different, normal word, and it then makes people wonder, look up the word, and 'see' the profanity word.

That's my main gripe with heavy censorship filters.

They cannot understand context and words with a perfectly ordinary meaning get filtered out since they have more than one meaning.

- A female dog (This one MIGHT be difficult to put in a normal sentence)
- A specific bird (few birds get censored)

Etc...

There are many examples but I guess Frontier is damned if they dont and damned if they do.

Is there ANY chance to get a profanity filter on/off option IN-GAME.
