No more camera shots from me ...

Am I the only one who hates this new camera set-up?
Whilst I can appreciate some like to have a complex system, the old method seemed to work well but has now vanished, to be replaced by ...?
I have tried various settings, but apart from the fixed views of various bits of the ship (why?) and the cabin (soon gets boring) all I get is the camera zooming off somewhere to the left and not responding to any controls.
So, I don't see me getting any more shots of my 'discoveries' any time soon [knocked out]

Did you check your control bindings? If you didn't change them or set a preset, the update doesn't add the default bindings for new stuff. (Which I don't like, but I guess they want to avoid conflicting key bindings at all costs.)

For me, the new camera suite took some getting used to, but it's much more flexible than the debug camera we had before.

Had to do a few experiments - also in order to keep my flight controls seperate from the camera controls - but in the end I settled on a combination (for the free camera) of the cursor keys (paralel left and right, forward and back), page up and down for up and down, and the mouse for camera pitch and yaw. Works really intuitively for simple camera shots and certainly a lot quicker and free than the old method. I might remapthe cursor and page up and down to the numeric keypad of the keyboard though as I also need a good place for camera rol left and right.

As marx said, if you've changed even 1 thing in your control setup (and so have a "Custom" control scheme), you're best off resetting back to whichever default you use and then re-doing your custom bits. They could've done a much better job of implementing the additional controls but it is what it is.

I think I'll end up liking the new camera suite when I've used it some more - but the ability to move your ship from the camera view worries me... I can already imagine the forum posts about ships destroyed because they pushed the wrong button in camera mode... I hope it's not me that does it first ;)

I don't know, really.. the old one felt crippled and rather cruddy.. this new one is overly complex, but I'm sure one can make it work very well if one takes the time to set up a sensible control scheme..
They really should have included a default scheme...

Im not a fan yet, due to the fact I need about 10 times the number of keys I have available, and how awkward it can be to make minor adjustments in free cam, but I reckon once I get used to it it will be fine

I just feel sorry for all those who have a full HOTAS setup, now they have to fly around with a keyboard at their elbow like Wesley Crusher

Hm? I use a HOTAS (Saitek X52), and don't need to use the keyboard for the camera suite. Well, except for accessing it, but that can be bound to a button too. I don't know about other presets, but the default X52 preset does leave some buttons free, so if you want to go completely keyboard-free, that's an option.

Oh, and one adjustment that I think can make quite the difference: switch the free camera throttle from "full range" to "forward only". It does allow for finer control, at the "cost" of having to have a button for reversing the direction.

oh ok, thanks for the tip!

It's complex to get it set up at first. Understanding the bindings and getting them adjusted to your needs is a bit confusing at first. But once you have it, you have it, and it's awesome.

I've got mine configured to act very much like the old system, now. I hit one key and it pops right into free-camera mode with no HUD (this part requires a macro, but it's an easy one), right behind my ship, and I can then fly the camera around like before (only better since I can move farther away and even fly my ship while in camera mode). Without the macro it would take 4 keystrokes.

Once you've experienced what you can do with the new camera, you will never want the old one back. I can guarantee that much.

Artigan99 wrote exactly what i was going to write.

Just bind it correctly and learn it, it beats the old one easily and is one of the best new features in Elite, easily.

And I can guarantee that you are wrong. I spent all beta struggling with the new camera controls and still can't express any liking for them. All I want is a quick method to take shot of a geyser or fumarole for record purposes, not to spend ten minutes fiddling with controls to just try and get something. I raised this in the beta, just a simple option, advanced camera controls or simple camera controls. So far I haven't taken a single screenshot that I couldn't do with the old setup, it just takes me ten times as long!

Some interesting comments - thanks to all who responded :)
I do have a custom setup - I use my old MS joystick and a Logitech G13 gamepad - it all works well.
I have tried setting keys to do stuff with the camera, but nothing happens except I can change the default views and on one of the settings the camera just 'flies' off without me touching anything. The ship is stationary so I am baffled.
I am loath to re-set to the defaults and start all my flying settings again.

took me a little while to get the binding/setting right.

I use KBAM so I had to remember to set the relative mouse on for the free camera mode. now it's almost exactly the same setup as the old but with enhanced functions.

I do have to press 3 keys to get it into simple free look but I'll live with that.

It's not a bad camera suite, but right now my pitch/roll/yaw are all very jerky and imprecise and I don't know how to make them better; I at least had fine control over the old debug camera even with me using my X52 to move the camera around. I might figure it out at some point, but right now I'm a little bit unimpressed.

I agree, I find the new Camera a right royal pain in the ***. Preferred the old simple to use and setup for a shot, and done. This is like 3 hours later sort of got the angle etc. Not a fan at all.

I think they should have included some kind of mini screen inside the options panel that let you test out binds without having to go back into the game and back out again ad nauseum.

The new setup isn't bad as is. It's just FDs habit of giving you something complex and saying "here, you figure it out."
The fact there is no default setting to start with so there is nothing to tweak to your liking. Just dive in and trial and error the heck out of it.

The new suite is great for those who take a lot of screen shots and make video content, but I'm another who doesn't take many pics, so I just want something quick and easy.
It took a few goes but I've set a couple of keys for up/down, left/right, and use my mouse for yaw/pitch/zoom.

The camera suite takes a LOT of getting used to, and it still has its limitations. However once you have mapped out the controls, and understand what they do, its extremely easy and intuitive to use... Its the initial setup thats REALLY hard to get your head around. It took me at least 4 hours playing around with it until I got a setup that I was comfortable with.

Once you have done that, then the results only speak for themselves. It's far from perfect I will admit, I still wish we had camera track target, and a few other things. But in the end I am grateful that Frontier gave us something. Dont give up on it so easily. Just take a bit of time, and a whole lot of patience to map out some controls that make sense to you.
