Waste of money to buy VR now?

New headsets are coming this spring/summer from microsoft/acer, Leonovo and Dell.
They are going to have better hardware specs and lower price.

So i guess its not worth it to buy any VR right now?

E I know. I usually think the same but now when release of more VR sets is so close as in a few months, i think its a valid statement.

I'm having a whale of a time with my CV1, but I was never under the impression that it would be my last headset. Waiting a little bit might be a wise thing to do with such a young technology... but I was glad I was silly <grin>

I agree.
When this many new devices are going to be released it pays off to wait and see which ones float to the top.

Can you post a link to the new headsets that you are referring to? I haven't heard about them.

As far as new tech goes, Elite is on the oculus store and steam store, which means that it has an obligation to continue to provide ongoing VR support using the Rift and possibly the Vive. As far as I know there has been no official talk of supporting any other headsets at this moment, though they tend to reveal such things at the last minute around here.

I would personally get a rift because it is

1. Available now and I hate waiting.
2. Will continue to be supported.

Edit: found it... https://www.engadget.com/2017/04/12/acer-microsoft-vr-mixed-reality/

I'd still go for the Rift.

The problem isn't exactly the VR glasses' hardware - it's the video cards and software (drivers) that you need. With what currently is available in terms of video cards, the current crop of glasses is just about useable. Up the resolution, and you'll have to cut down somewhere else.

Can't really answer that question, because it depends upon a number of unknowns:

1) How well does Microsoft's HoloLens technology handle 6DOF head tracking? THAT, IMO, is what makes for a good VR experience. HoloLens relies on external cameras for its Altered Reality, which may be sufficient to render virtual objects projected into a real world setting, but I'm not so sure how it'll be able to handle things when it can't cheat by using the real world as its "background".

2) How soon will "next gen" VR headsets be coming out? IMO, what's holding back VR is not the VR headset technology itself, but graphic cards needed to render VR at the ideal 90 frames per second. Even the latest generation graphics cards can't handle much more than what the first generation commercial VR headsets require. If we want high resolution graphics with a wide field of view in our VR, we'll need eye tracking and foviated rendering. The prototypes are available, so they're coming eventually, but are they two years away, or five? If they're two years away, I'd wait and get the cheaper alternative, to tide you over until the second gen headsets come out. If they're five years away, I'd personally get it now, if I could afford it.

3) How much is delaying your gratification worth to you? I pulled the trigger on a Vive headset a year ago, and it was very much worth it for me. Of course, I'd been saving money for a VR headset since I saw the oculus kickstarter, so I was willing to wait for the technology to go commercial before buying.

Happy I got my Rift (90% for ED*), but the above is what I'm waiting for next, which requires software to be written utilising it too, so I reckon at least another year, probably two - they've still got to find a better lens solution, tho the PSVR lens sounds good (on paper at least), with its sub pixel tech eliminating SDE (mostly) with no god ray artefacts.

@ OP - I'm a bit wary of these MS approved headsets coming for $300, for something due out this spring there's suspiciously little information out in the wild. It'd be cool if they turn out to be superior to the Vive and Rift - the 4k Pimax has great visuals but (from what I read on these forums), has bad drift and not great head tracking.

* Tried to go back to the monitor and everything is so tiny...

There's an expert review of the Pimax in this weekend's c't (German computer magazine - according to another article, the largest computer magazine still in print...), and they pretty much trashed it for anything but watching movies. Yes, you get a higher resolution, but only through upscaling, and the near non-existant head tracking removes the immersion effect.

Coming up on a year with the Rift. Definitely not a waste of money for this player. I follow the VR development news daily and see nothing coming in 2017 that will usurp the Rift or Vive (don't mind if I am proven wrong). If something compelling does show up this year then, I could see maybe a new HMD in 2018 when prices settle in. I suspect it will be late next year before we see things like foveated rendering and VR SLI started to be employed in a meaningful way. Given the speed at which FD operates, it may be more like 2019 before they consider implementing any of the potential upcoming features. Like the gpu, we may well fall into a 2-3 year upgrade pattern in VR headsets. Like so many have said here, I can no longer play non VR titles. If today was the first day I had tried a Rift then tomorrow would be the day I ordered it. Looking at when and what is likely coming in gen2, I wouldn't want to wait a couple of more years before enjoying this exciting tech. YMMV

I have PlayStation VR even with the lowest resolution of the 3 big VR headsets I am very happy with it. Resident Evil 7 and Until Dawn rush of blood is some very exciting stuff. Heck I would have bought it just for 3D movies and all the great 360 videos! Waiting is lost experiences and increases cost because you are now faced with purchasing a huge backlog of software.

it must have been lost in translation but pimax 4k has zero tracking issues. it doesn't have positional tracking which is why there's so much drift sometimes. and that's IMO it's biggest issue right now.
however, if you own EDtrackit then it will work by disabling the HMD gyro...

Do you have sources for being better? I know lg one is a tiny bit better but I expect it to be dearer than rift and is not due yet

I love my rift and never had a regret my end

It's just a question of how much of your remaining life you want to be fun, to simplify it a bit. If you might live another five years and the idea of VR appeals to you, definitely do it now. It might be half of your lifetime before double the resolution running just as well is available. If you think you'll live another 70 years, plenty of time for dealmaking.
