THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

The Erinyes live in Erebus, which is a system in game.

Edit: ninjaed by Emperor

Perhaps that is a sufficient ingame clue, yes. However, as pointed out above, the German riddle explicitly wants Roman goddesses of revenge so I have my doubts (because the Erinyes are the Greek ones).

most of my initial answers were spot on, only got 7 & 8 flat out wrong.

which brings me to:

3. Fourth Minor Bear - presuming the fourth star of Ursae Minoris - Epsilon Ursae Minoris
9. the mother of the mother of - Hemera - yes, Gaia had a mother.
19. women of vengeance - i too though Erinyes, but someone else suggested this and when reviewed by Drew, he did not confirm it, though this person wasn't firm in claiming it. Someone else guessed Erinni, Erynes, Furies in their list, and Drew said some were half marks, but he is only giving credit for correct unambiguous answers. In greek mythology the Erinyes, sometimes spelled Erinys, were the female personification of vengeance. I will stick with my answer of Erinyes(also spelled Erinys - either spelling refers to the same trio).

According to the German version of the riddle, which, surprisingly, seems to be more accurate in a number of points, we are looking for the "rasenden Rachegöttinnen Roms" - which means we need Roman/Latin versions (in the case of Poinai: Poenae; in case of the Erinyes: Furiae [or Furies in English]).

What about direa?
Roman name for furies
Sorry, not in game at the moment.

Ultio.. Roman Poena

Seriously, with all the religious inbred going on back then, I don't know if there is much of a difference... ;)

19. Women of vengeance infernal

I have this...

Erinyes also known as the Furies, were female deities of vengeance; they were sometimes referred to as "infernal goddesses", The Erinyes live in Erebus (in game system)

Plural, dieties of vengence reference to infernal and live in a system referenced in game....Not saying this is right but just a suggestion which appears to match the clue....

Others have...

Moirai (god of fate?) - no ref in galaxy map
Erinyes, Erinys, Furies & Furiae - no ref in galaxy map (although same thought lines I started out with)
Tisiphone - no ref in galaxy map
Tilphousia - no ref in galaxy map
POINE - no ref in galaxy map
Poena - no ref in galaxy map
daimona - no ref in galaxy map

Are there any other in game references to these that anyone knows of?

Not that I can find. No systems, not sure about celestial bodies, starports, planetary outposts or megaships. I'm not in-game right now though so I'm limited to ed starmap and eddb.

Moirai is a system ingame according to EDDB

Wait... My suggestions are not right?
...
3. Cynosura
...
9. Caligo

I think so. Perhaps, 9 - Gaia.

I believe that at least Cynosura is suitable for this reason:
Ursa Minor and Ursa Major were related by the Greeks to the myth of Callisto and her son Arcas, both placed in the sky by Zeus. In a variant of the story in which Boötes represents Arcas, Ursa Minor represents a dog. This is the older tradition, which explains both the length of the tail and the obsolete alternate name of Cynosura (the dog's tail) for Polaris, the North Star. Cynosura is also described as a nurse of Zeus, honoured by the god with a place in the sky

And also, why Caligo:
Caligo
Called the mother of Chaos. With Chaos, she gave birth to Nyx, Dies, Erebus and Aether.

But I also believe that Gaia is suitable for the role of mother.

Wait... My suggestions are not right?

But I also believe that Gaia is suitable for the role of mother.

As discussed above, if (and only if) the German Galnet version of the riddle is to be trusted, then the German clues to both 3 and 9 do not fit your answers.

Dunno if this is relevant, but I was concerned by the use of 'miser' in the clue, since it doesn't have anything obvious to do with the Greek mythology.

It turns out, that if you look at synonyms of 'miser', you get 'harpy' - which is nicely Greek.

In a further interesting twist Homer, apparently, names a harpy as the mother of Achilles' two horses - which were sired by the West Wind, also known as Zephyrus...

Oh, and harpies are also responsible for delivering evil-doers to the Erinyes.

So Drew, is 'harpy' a thing here?

Although Midas is a well known miser and I think it was Plato who popped out a moral tale about an unnamed miser, so there at least a couple of Greek connections and more than a few others that could stretch to the description.

when I searched for misers sum i found happiness so a poor misers sum would most likely be the opposite? anger or hatred? or Ogre means anger in ancient greek i think and Fibonacci’s Zephyrum(zero) would be the center of a spiral Sagittarius A or zero in italian meant west wind which would point to ZEPHYROS or zephyrus
