How did you guys do it?

I want a corvette. I am currently an Ensign and it is taking ages to get a little bit of progress in the ranks.

So am I missing like a trick on how to rank up faster? Because it took me 2 days to just get a 15% increase. Or is Ensign a particularity harder rank to progress through?

Any tips on good ways to rank up would be appreciated because this mission farming is getting tedious and ridiculous.

I did my grind at 17 Draconis and PRE systems in 2.1. (Donations)

It needs a lot of grind and dedication to get towards your dream ship. :D

Aditi is a good spot rn, since the data run/ passenger/ cargo missions all point to the neighbouring system, and the planetary bases give you missions for coming back. You need horizon though. both systems are in outbreak rn and soon into unrest.

I sat at 17 Draconis for 7 hours watching YouTube videos. Donated about 100m total and went up about 6 ranks. Wasn't that bad either: caught up on a few podcasts. Bought a Corvette just before Frontier gutted 17 Draconis for the first time.

Nowadays, you may need to grind out scan missions from a Fed-aligned station for a week minimum.

ALARM! Empire trespass in fed thread detected! %)

Tbh, the Corvette isn't all that. Yes it's big, it hits hard and it can take a pounding, but if you don't engineer the crap out of it, it's slower than you can imagine and incredibly unwieldy. Flying my Python after flying the Corvette feels like a flying a sidewinder, it's that slow.

Another (not so boring) method would be to find a surface military base which has many federation factions. Make sure that the missions point to "low security" systems and grind your way with bounty hunting (which we all love after all ;) ). After a while you'll be able to tell which factions to hunt. They are the anarchy factions at the target low sec system, but you can take all kinds if you don't mind spending time interdicting wanted ships by normal factions (too time consuming though). That combination of the military base and the low sec systems around it WITH anarchy (pirate) factions in them is not so common, but it worth the trouble. If you get to find one, you'll be farming it forever. After lots of searching I have found only 2 pairs. The second military base (which I found 3 days ago) has 5 federation factions in it and they all give bounty hunting missions (depending on their state). You get ranking by completing the missions AND by delivering the fed bounties (not sure about the latter). You'll be making a decent amount of money after you get allied with the factions too.

Those ships should have been how FDev introduced multicrew, in fact it should not be possible to fly one of them without a few friends on board.

This would have been a horribly bad idea that would tick off anybody who does not want content to be gated behind having to play with friends. Myself included. I like being free to be seclusive.

It's not about scarcity, it's about progression - having to put in fair amounts of time and effort porportionate to anyone else who isn't doing exploits. Speaking of which:

we took advantage of clever gameplay mechanics.

Classic SDC whitewashing of hopping on a bandwagon of some reddit "PSA" get-rich-quick exploit scheme.

That's not clever, that's out-and-out lazy.

THIS ^^, pretty much. I was vastly under-impressed the first time I took mine into combat. But, after engineering the snot out if it, it's pretty good. Gmbled C4 Grade 5 Efficient beams, Gmbled C3 G5 MC with corrosive, Gmbled C2 MC's overcharged, and Turreted C1 Grade 5 Efficient beams, Upgraded PP/PD, G5 DDs, boosters, upgraded prismatics... Just getting the rank for a Corvette is the first step. Then the Money to afford it. Then the modules. Then the RNGineering.. Mine sits at 700 million, and it's for PVE.. I take on wings in it. It's not invincible, but it's close.

BUT, I got my rank at TUN. Ran missions like crazy. There was a route. You loaded up at TUN, then made the run, delivering as you went, donating and picking up new missions on the route for other stops on the route. Every complete run netted you like 4-7%.. took a good 2 hours. This was at the last level before Rear Admiral. I'm kind of hazy on the whole thing. I think I have repressed memories of the whole traumatic experience. I tried Aditi, didn't work for me. Maybe it was just me.

I'm currently Post Commander 16% and I have no idea how I could make progress faster so I just do the occasional Federation missions. I donate when possible. But it may take months before I get anywhere near the rank needed for the Corvette. I don't know of any shortcuts or systems where it can get faster. I advise you just play the game normally and not grind. It's maddening in the long run. So just play and take a look at your rank every month. One day you'll see you're close. There's not much more to it.

How is Aditi going to help somebody achieve FEDERAL rank?

I didn't.

No ship is worth that level of grind, I stopped long ago when I had enough for the Clipper and FAS. This game has zero respect for the player's time and I won't be goaded into wasting even more of it.

Has anyone here ever played one of the Gran Turismo games?

You earned money by winning races. You used the money to buy cars. Now some cars were so expensive that the only way to earn enough money for them was to repetitively run a single high paying race over and over and over again.

A game should not be work. Most of us have real life jobs and families. Time spent in the game should be time spent having fun doing what you want to do. It shouldn't be time spent doing stuff you don't want to do just to access game items you want so you can finally do what you want to do.

This one car cost $30 Million.

To get that car you had to do this one race that earned 117k a mere 256 times. That's 16 hours straight of doing a near 4 minute race. Or you could play the game and maybe one day, a few years from now you could afford the car.

I did my ranking a couple of months ago using the Sothis run, but it's pretty much nerfed now. So is the HIP 10716 gig for Imperial ranking. FD appears to be cutting everything off at the knees anymore. Oh, and you don't need a billion credits for a vette. I don't even have a net worth of a billion credits, and I have one (and several other ships) and it does just fine for PVE. I stop at taking on a wing of 'condas though. :)

Unless the guy above is talking about PVP which I don't do or have any experience with.

No other advice other than to say good luck with the ranking. It is a lousy mechanism but it's what you're stuck with. I have one more rank for a Cutter and I will probably never get there. :(

Col 285 Sector YF-M C8-8 (Lebedev Planetary) <-> Niu Hsing (Calabra's Clam/Planetary, Gorbatko Terminal/Outpost): 2 Systems, 3 Stations Total

1. Take a fun/small ship. Lots of data missions. Cargo is irrelevant. I did this in a well equipped class-A Courier.
2. The two systems are fairly popular so expect them to go into Lockdown/Civil War/Etc somewhat regularly.
3. Because of the regular lockdowns and civil wars, I just left my Courier at Cabrera's and used my "Space Taxi" to go back and forth to my home system (far away). My "Space Taxi" is a stripped down (no weapons), "D" Rated DBX with a 37 LY RNGineered jump range. The Courier is also relatively low cost so its very inexpensive to have it transported in behind me and just leave it there. Its pretty far out on the bubble so you want to be able to get out there pretty quick - and then back if nothings running... My "taxi" has no weapons so I wanted something "usable" waiting for me when I got there (My Courier)
4. When its running, ITS RUNNING! So prepare to sit down and grind when things are good!
5. Don't take the data missions from the Niu Hsing stations to Wirau unless you are desperate. Merbold Landing (the only station) is 46,000 LS from the arrival point and almost never has anything coming back towards Niu Hsing... So its a long, one-way, trip (7 mins from POA)! Maybe do it ONCE so you see what I mean...
6. Its fairly easy to fill up on 20 data missions each time you jump systems. So 40 missions in a round trip through all three stations. (Lebedev -> Gorbatko -> Cabrera's -> Lebedev...) I was getting about a 12-14% rank increase each round trip (..and this was at "Post Captain" the rank just before "Rear Admiral" (the one that matters!)!
7. You can do a round trip (all three stations) in about 20-25 minutes.
8. So that's about 25% rank/hr at the final step before Rear Admiral! (Lower ranks progress proportionally faster!)
9. Once you get Rear Admiral you can pack up your toys, go home, and buy your Corvette!

* Sothis/Ceos appear to be "done". Some "kind" person appears to have UA Bombed one of them ("Sothis I think) - and I never found anything worth hanging around for... Went out there twice and it sucked both times!

I made millions on the thrilling and dangerous smuggle missions and then used all that money to hand in charity for the Federation factions.

But now all that fun is gone... just a few credits for no thrilling adventures at all..... sigh.

Aw... I remember the days, when I could pack 15 million cr in smuggle missions in my little Asp and with as little time limit as 30 minutes to complete over 20 jumps. Hunted by several bounty hunters and pirates alike, constantly interdicted.... adrenaline pumping my heartrate to dangerous levels. 160... 170.... 180... 200!

Those days are gone forever, thanks to the nerfers.

These systems have really dried up since 2.3. It took at least 2 hours to do 1 round trip yesterday, in the end i gave up. Currently looking for another system similar but really not having much luck. Don't know if 2.3 nerfed the data carrying spawn rate (?) or if its just the current states (1 was in boom, 1 in none yesterday)..

But yes I do agree this was the best method I had found. Stuck on 69% Post commander now [blah]

I'm not that easily maddened by grinding. I've played and still am playing 2 other games that basically revolve around grinding. I've been running 55 ursae majoris for 3 days now and just finally seeing progression refreshes my spirit. At my current speed ill probably have the corvette by thursday or friday.
