Single Player on Playstation4

PS4 should have the same available modes as the other platforms.

If you don't have a PSN subscription, it'll be single player Solo Mode only - to the best of my knowledge.

Just remember that solo mode is no true singleplayer mode. You still need to be online and are connected to the shared galaxy, you just won't meet other players.

The FAQ says that Elite can be played in solo mode without ps+ but to play in multiplayer you will ps+ subscription

Yeah, I have a question about this. If PSN or my own Internet is down, I can still play NMS, I just can't access the catalog database until PSN is back up. Will ED be like this, allowing me to play disconnected, and then synchronize the "shared galaxy" once back online, or will ED refuse to load if it can't ping the servers?

No. All game modes (Solo, Private Group and Open) are online only. I understand the training missions can be played offline, but that's it. The reason is that all players affect the background simulation (BGS) 'live' as it were, irrespective of the mode they play in. It's the way the game was designed.

Okay, that makes sense. Do you know what kind of data is exchanged with the server when playing solo mode? Surely it's not the constant stream of position data needed for PVP. That's assuming NPC ships are generated and controlled locally via PC / console in solo mode. Or are NPCs controlled by the server like a traditional MMO, even in solo? My guess is that BGS only needs the "results" of interactions with the galaxy, similar to NMS, otherwise the options would be PVE and PVP instead of "solo" and "open."

Actually its pretty minimal. David Braben did say originally that you could get by tethering a laptop to a mobile phone and play ED on the train if you wanted to. That's not to say that some activities don't require a server connection, they do. For example, downloading the current available mission list from Station Services, selling cartographic data, buying or selling commodities (because you're transacting with the BGS along with all other players), scanning a planet (to return planet properties and so on), or jumping to a new system (setting up a new instance) to name but a few.

Ahh - yeah the BGS server is always running when you are playing because your actions effect the BGS. Dav Scott did a great Q&A on the three servers that are used at ED HQ and their functions. I can't find the exact graphic he used but essentially yes i believe you are correct. The BGS server runs the BGS separate to other interactions. The 'gameplay' server handles SOLO play, and a third server (Adjudication server?), handles player instancing.

So if you play solo you are not involved on the adjudication server because you have chosen not to be involved in player instancing, but you are still talking to two servers at HQ. if you want to know more just check out the Dav Scott Q&A LIVESTREAM.

Interesting! I'll see if I can find some of these videos discussing "under the hood" dynamics. I wonder if some of the "dependables" we're waiting on is PSN's link to these external BGS servers. Does anyone know if the PS4 NMS discovery catalog is across all platforms or PS4 only? Or for that matter, do any existing games on PS4 have cross-platform capabilities? Maybe it's Sony we need to be pressuring, not FDev (Sony has a reputation of being more locked down than Xbox, at least with things like mods).

What I read Solo play and open play both carry the same progress you can switch mode of play and never lose progress between the two modes.

Correct. But in solo you do not play on the instancing server so you will not meet anyone other than NPC's - but your actions still affect the BGS.

In Private group - you can only be instanced with other private group members, but your actions still affect the BGS

In Open - you can meet anyone and your actions affect the BGS BUT you can block instancing of players you don't like by putting them on your block list in game, and also 'unfriending' them i believe. There was a youtube video on this point. Not clear if you have to 'friend' them first and then unfriend them, or if it is possible to unfriend them without friending them...? I might go ask that question actually...

That's correct, up to a point. You can log out of Open and log straight back into Solo and you'll pick up more or less where you left off. So if you logged off while you are docked at a station, when you log back in (in whatever mode) you'll still be docked at that station; if you log out while in the middle of deep space or on the ground either in your ship or your SRV, you'll still be in the same place when you log back in. Any missions you pick up or fines you accrue in one mode will still be there if you relog into a different mode.

There are caveats however. Obviously if you logged out while inside a Conflict Zone or a HazRez, its state may be reset when you log back in, and points of interest (POIs) on planets can get shuffled about a bit. But you could accept a mission in while you were in Open to kill 12 pirates, kill half of them, and kill the rest in Solo if you wanted to.
