Hardware & Technical saitek x56

I bought the saitek x56 and recently started with elite dangerous.

The question i have is
in the training it says use joy9 to retract landing gear.
on the controller its sw 4 (only sw1 to sw6 on the controller)

Is there a way to change this in the game ?
just to let it states use joy4 to retract landing gear?

I don think i can do this in the options menu or in the controller software
I think this has to be done in some kind of files but which one and how if its even possible

You can bind pretty much everything to whatever you like in-game from the Controls menu. If you mess it up, you can always go back to the defaults and try again.

The ingame config does not allow me to change the text and speech use joy 9 to retract landing gear
This is somewhere in some file where i have to change that.
i just dont know what file and where its located

Bought my game at steam so i found the program in C: programfiles / steam ...........

maybe some more clear explained

Its ok that retract landing gear is on SW4 thats no problem
The problem is that in the game it say use joy 9 to retract landing gear and the function is under button SW4

What i am after is retract landing gear on SW4 and that it say in the game "use joy 4 to retract landing gear
The numbers must match otherwise it drives me nuts [big grin]

If the binding works and your gear works, I wouldn't worry about it - you'll never see those messages in-game except in the pre-flight checks.

No idea about X56... But on my X55 the button names on my joystick doesn't have the same names as in the game.

Ignore the names on the joystick and throttle for now and just go with the game's buttons.

Thnx m8 Finally someone who knows what he is talking about and what i am talking about.
I dont think the rest understands anything of what i am saying or asking.

And yes you are right it only shows in the training sessions and not in the game itself
I must say its a bit confusing for some one who starts playing this game

Next step is to asign the buttons and there are a load of buttons on the sticks and i dont think when you start the game you have all functions because of the sevreral differant ships and weapons.
There will be more questions in the future from this novice

with asining the buttons in the game config it still shows these joy1 joy12 joy21 buttons and its driving me crazy
It takes hours to find out which one is what

On the x52 it shows exactly the letters and names of the buttons on the joystick and thats easy to setup
the x56 has something like 30 buttons just on the left throtle stick [blah] its a disaster to asign all those buttons

So here are my questions again
1) is there a file like a xml where i can change those joy12 letters to those on my stick like SW1 SW4 etc etc ?
2) does elite dangerous support this stick ?
3) should i buy another stick ?

Any advise and help in this matter is welcome

here is a picture of the game settings

I know of no way to change how programs will label the buttons, but I like this template to keep track. It has labels in black for the stick's markings, and in red with the numbers most games will see them as.

It's for the X55, but I'm sure you can adjust.

It also fits everything onto one printable page. I don't know who made it originally, or I'd give them credit.
I might also ask them for a higher res version :)

Personally, I recommend binding Select Target Ahead and UI Select to button 3, aka button B on the right side of the stick.
I also recommend binding the knobs F and G on the throttle to horizontal and vertical throttles.

Everyone comes up with something different, of course, but here's my bindings:

I am completely with you peppi. Here I am, 6 months later and I am struck by exactly the same issue as you have.

I have just started playing Elite: Dangerous and am struggling my way gear and you have no idea what "[JOY 9]" is. I don't want to keep pressing every button in succession till I find it because all sorts of things happen when I press miscellaneous buttons and I have no idea what's going on. In fact the only way I worked out how to retract the landing gear was because of this very thread telling me the button I was after was actually called "[SW4]" - thank you very much ;)

After studding Zerocz's image above I was also able to deduce that when she was saying to press "[JOY 13]" was in fact "[TRG 1]" on the x56 that she was referring to.

So thank you to you both. Hopefully I will be able to intuit the rest from here.

well i was thinking of asking for compatibilaty or how to make it myself
but given the attitude FD has i think its a waste of time

i dont know whats wrong here but i think i took the wrong turn and should have chosen another game

I just got an X56, and I don't like that the key bindings are nondescript: like Joy 4 & Joy 15. I lost a couple heatsinks pushing buttons. I got a question though: how to you move up and down in the galaxy map? I figured out how to move around and zoom, but can't figure out which button moves the marker up and down.

there is a litle stick called slew map if you press it then you can move in other directions
and stick number 4 is also for moving

In game options, under Controls you can bind any control 2 different ways i.e. joystick button and keyboard key but it is not required. You can set the landing-gear toggle to any key or button you like. Mine is bound to the little, blue button above the thumb-stick on the throttle as well as a keyboard key so Voice Attack can use it (Voice Attack binds to keyboard keys). My heat-sinks are bound to the wheel on top of the throttle. That wheel is also a push-button and my heat-sinks are bound to that, the same way chaff is bound to the push-button wheel underneath. Other than using the push-buttons I have not bound the wheels themselves to anything as they get moved around so easily. I generally bind joystick buttons in the left-hand column in Controls and keyboard keys in the right-hand column, just to keep things organized.

I am at work but I think if you click-and-hold the right mouse button, then move the mouse forward and back you will translate up and down in the map.

You can turn off the pre-flight checks in the Functions panel.

I think you dont understand our problem
again
in the game option menu we can assing everyting to our buttons and switches
in the game menu it says JOY1 or JOY15 or JOY 22
on our saitek it says TGL1 or SW1 or A,B,C,D
so the text in the game menu does not corespond to the text on our sticks

One thing that may help is if you go to "Devices and Printers" in your Windows control panel.
Right click on the icon for your joystick or input device and select "Game Controller Settings".

From the list that is now displayed in the Game Controllers window, highlight the controller you want to look at and then click the properties button.

It should then present you a window something similar to the picture below. (This can change quite a bit depending on which device/drivers you are using)

From there you can press each button on the joystick and watch for the corresponding indicator to light up, letting you know which number it is. Some sliders and dials will occasionally show as always on if not centered.

Hope that helps.
