Inspiration for Elite - anybody remember "Alien"?

In fairness, the original trilogy had the used future look to an extent - the X wings in the Death Star attack for example had scars on them. It is only the wonderful prequels that everything looked all glossy.

True, but I was using Star Wars more as a generic example than picking on it specifically. I could just as easily have said Star Trek or even Bab 5. Many future society visions have an overall "bright" aesthetic even if some details are a little dark, but they are still overall a long way from the "SF noir" of Blade Runner or Alien, and that's where I see a certain kinship with ED.

Take the supercruise sound, for example. In most space SF where such things are depicted the accompanying sound is a whooshing or engine sound. In ED it is like distant thunder or waves crashing over rocks in the dark. Very different feel.

I wouldn't touch this game even if they paid me for it.
The game is being made by Creative Assembly and published by Sega.

If you consider FD the high point of UK game development, then CA is pretty much the low end. They used to be groundbreaking developer a decade ago, but now they got reduced to being a pre-order cashcow for Sega.
This juicy pre-order dlc only shows it even more glaringly.

I do hope FD take a look at the Alien movies and perhaps try to also bring out it's atmosphere in some ways and learn some things from it.
But they should stay away from this game at all costs.

Pretty lame you have to preorder to get this day 1 DLC. One wonders if they are afraid of people reading reviews of the game before deciding whether to buy or not.

They did pretty much thesame when they released Rome 2 total war.
Locking up the greek city states in a pre order dlc, knowing full well that the greek city states are one of the most popular factions to play with in the roman era.
Offcourse later on for the same reason they sold the (overpriced) dlc separately.

My thoughts as well. There's nothing more suspicious than a salesman yelling about a limited bargain that must be bought there and then.

On the subject of things inspiring Elite (or in this case the reverse).

I watched the series "Firefly" for the first time fairly recently (yeah, yeah I know...;)). After the first episode I recall thinking that Joss Whedon must have been a fan of Elite/Frontier back in the day. The whole premise screams "Elite".

Alien Isolation + Occulis Rift = nervous breakdown :cool:

Unfortunately according to a thread over at the OR forums there won't be any VR support for the game just yet... I'm guessing the guys who made if probably don't want to go down in history as making the first game that causes its players to have heart attacks! ;)

Probably my favorite movie, closely followed by Blade Runner.

On a more Elite related note, I've always thought that Alien / Aliens has the aesthetic that Elite is going for. The game already has the Used Future look going, with peeling paint and cockpit surfaces showing wear.

The visuals look just right. I hope we'll get something like this when avatar play arrives.

I think Elite looks too clean at the moment. It doesn't give me that aesthetic feel of a Alien/Blade Runner look just yet. Everything looks new and shiny - the Orbis being a prime example. I hope that's because we've only seen Core systems in beta, and when we get to see systems further afield a more industrial and untamed frontier world feel will become more apparent.

Ship interiors as they stand at the moment are far too new and clean to warrant being associated with the Nostromo and the refinery it was towing. And we'll have to see the inside of spacestations other than the docking hub before we can say what sort of aesthetic FD are gong for there - but again I'd hope we get a good contrast between richer systems and poorer systems, with the stations in poorer systems being more run down, and a step away from what we can imagine the interior of the Aulin Enterprise will look like.

I love that industrial decay look - it makes games feel less... 'gamey'

Did you guys see the news. Sigourney Weaver is doing the voice acting for Ripley!

Saw the images last night - the character models are really too far into the uncanny valley for me, and the proportion of Ripley's body (too long) to legs (too short) looks very odd? :S

Hey, no tongue on the first date!

Seriously though, I'm convinced the dark gritty look of Alien and "classic" Star Wars, have made an impression on Elite Dangerous, and it looks the better for it!

I hope they never start to go "prequel" on us, and keep J.J. Abrams away as well, just to be sure! I don't want anything adapted into shiny oblivion, so it can be digested by the masses, without the need for additional toothpaste, since it all comes prepackaged. It just turns my stomach.

Long live the originals, for they looked so much better, even with "inferior" tech. Progression apparently makes for haste, rather than taste.

I'm not going to preorder anything for a compulsory feature, Rome total War indeed! And Elder Scrolls Online, while I'm on a ranting rampage, with their awful fake preorder Imperials. No Imperial support makes me sad, and using them to "cheat" makes me mad!

Yeah this "Alien" game looks sweet, but a compulsory preorder bonus is no longer any kind of treat. But they got the right idea, my childhood mind runs free! Remember children, do not disturb eggs! They were not placed there for your benefit!

I have a dark gritty look? :D

(this thread will keep me entertained until next Lavecon hehehehehe)

Differentiation measures were inadequate, now that the true power of hindsight can be applied. Arguably a much more substantial and more frequently activated ability, compared to the somewhat elusive and rarely gifted foresight. :p

Just in case there is any confusion, that's not me :D

until we get a real life pic of you holding a sign stating that you are indeed OUR Alien, along side a newspaper with the current date on it... well, we will believe what we want to believe.
