How to beat the 4th Combat Scenario (Recon)

I had the same with this initially, but now I usually finish on full shields and 100% hull.

Don't start shooting too soon let them settle down. I use reverse a LOT in this mission, get it right and you can make them hover right in front of your guns. I lazer them down to 2 red rings then send 2 or 3 missiles to kill em off. only fire the missiles when they are not actually pointing at you & shooting. once the 2-3 missiles are away you can forget that target and move to the next.

I have tried recording this with FRAPS but something about doing that alters their AI, it sounds mad but if I try to film them, they all target me and shoot me very hard at the same time..

Also, I turned overclocking on on the CPU and throttled down some of the other processes.. and the missions seem easier now and this is the only way I can kill the Cobra in the incursion mission. Sounds mad but faster PC = easier missions, for me at least.

I managed to beat this and the solution was pretty easy although unsatisfying.

I didn't realize I could fly in reverse until someone else mentioned that.

I also wasn't sure what the range was on these weapons so initially i was getting way too close. Now i start shooting when the target was about 1500m away and i just flew in reverse the whole time to keep them at about that distance and just held my finger down on the beam laser. Don't even need to use a missile if you don't want to. But this is a pretty lame solution since it's just not that fun flying in a straight backwards line.

I'm also finding the controls very hard to get used to. I'm using a mouse and keyboard at the moment (trying to snag a good joystick and throttle on ebay) and for me having the mouse rotate the ship when i move it sideways doesn't seem very helpful. It's very odd having to rotate the ship so whatever i want to fly towards is either above or below me so that I can then actually pitch the ship up or down to actually point at the target.

You can save heat sinks but circling around and dropping out of stealth. Use the fact that you know the other ships locations and just move outside of the Cobra's radar.

How you know if you are out of his radar range?

and should we split this off into it's own thread since we're not talking about the 4th mission anymore?

The missiles deal much more damage now and 1 missile destroys Federal Fighter as soon as its shields are down.

I don't remember how my test went while practising the alpha version of those scenarios, but that was already the case in PB1. :)

This is something I noticed early: when your computer is having hard times providing a good frame rate, you move slower, it's not easy to notice, cause you tend to think everything is slower, but your ship tends to be less maneuverable. That's why I only play in 1080p, although my screen is 1440p.

I do that in the beginning, sort of slowly gliding away from him. But from there on I ran silent, at least once I got closer to the first target in order to get up real close (got it before it even moved, oh how brave... :p).

In the end I had plenty of time, save for the last, but the Cobra was far away enough at that stage.

As for the forth, I ended up "space jousting" (got it on video), but they got me down to a third before I gave up trying to dogfight them. In the end, winning is what matters, no? ;)
