#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

I'm a big fan of these app's/sites and I think they greatly enhance the game but I fear they're on a hiding to nothing here.

Elite lore has it that this information isn't supposed to be available across the galaxy and, presumably, FDev has decided to stick with that lore by limiting the resources available to CMDRs in-game.
The service provided by sites like EDDB is great but it would seem to be in direct contradiction to what FDev actually wants, so demanding support from FDev seems a little... optimistic.

Ultimately, even if FDev ignore this action completely, I fail to see what this action might achieve.
Either these sites will go back to business as usual or they'll be replaced by other sites which are willing to operate within the constraints imposed by FDev's attitude.

While I fully support FD supporting third party apps and whatnots as much as possible, and the third party sites provide very valuable services (of which i use several), I cannot support this action.

This is basically trying to hold the devs to ransom. As a dev i would not negotiate with people under such conditions.

I don't see it as being about ransom or negotiating.
It's not as if the game relies a lot on 3rd parties and external information; it's all in the game after all, innit? :p

Fer what its worth, considering I dont even know what those sites are for let alone use any of them, I hope this little protest works. If nothing else, it might finally provoke a reaction out of them and shed some light on what has become the standard FD approach of merely ignoring everyone.

Not true ! They are in the middle of fixing patch 2.3.02 and have offered a very fast response to complaints on that one, with plenty of feedback.

Third Party tools and API access are a must,. since there is nothing even nearing equivalent of them in-game.

One of the major irk's I have is that we cannot even be registered in-game as a minor faction member, let alone have our entire wing registered in-game, for those playing the BGS this is vitally important feature that is completely missing. The 3rd party sites such as Inara go a long long way to making up this shortfall by FD.

I need to read this <after I do my community goal thing>
Honestly tho EDDB is my life blood...that and the tool to upload to it are amazing. If they could let EDDB incorporate into the backend SQL database or whatever they use .... I would be sooooooo happy.
I literally don't know how id play this game without eddb.

I definitely support this. The in game tools and info are terrible. Without third party sites and tools I don't think I'd still be playing Elite.

This is exactly why FD needs to pay serious attention to this. There are lots of players still playing and still buying nameplates, tattoos and skins who would otherwise not be if it were not for these sites. Me included.

As a software developer I know how much time goes into coding and especially manintaining and developing the tools further. Lack of any official API (except the journal...) can be incredibly frustrating.

If FDev wont have some iteration of the 3rd party tools IN GAME then they should atleast talk with the major 3rd party developers who invest so much time and effort in creating the tools for them.

Support.

I understand you must have frustrations at times, but right now is not the time to escalate this. We are still in the period after a major patch with some major issues still outstanding. When the dust settles, by all means, push, but not like this.

The biggest thing that comes across to me in this protest is Frontiers lack of communication (again nothing new).

If they have tried to talk and talk again, even before this major patch, what's to say the same will continue afterwards. Sometimes you run out of options. Either just quit and walk away or take desperate measures to point out how valuable their player base find these tools.

Without these 3rd party tools, most aspects of the game are worse.

I hope you get a response from FDev, and are back up soon :)

I've never used them and never will. I won't hide the fact that for each "omg what do I do without this" post I read, I do smirk somewhat.
but it's only a few days and your crutches will soon be propping you back up.

even though I never use them, I support them and wish them the best!

I could not have gotten through the Engineers without the support provided by INARA and EDDB. Exploration and Trade would also be greatly diminished experiences without the wealth of information provided by third-party tools. Please, FDEV, give these folks some love. You would not have been able to post a link to that wonderful time lapsed video of CMDRs' progress through the Galaxy without them.

What tools

Frontier never asked third parties to make sites. You guys took it upon yourselves to do it. Going on strike is only going to annoy the player base and not FD.

On the plus side maybe people will learn how to use the in game tools for trading.

And just what tools are you talking about? The tools that allow me to find that 5A fuel scoop with out flying to 900 systems, or maybe the one that lets me see all the systems that I have discovered or just my first discoveries. Or how about that ship I have been wanting but as their is no search function in the game now I get to spend days flying around looking for it. Or should I have a 2" binder with notes at my desk, or even maybe make a dozen spreadsheets so I can remember what it was like to play eve. No Fdev has dropped the ball in some areas and the 3rd party programs have gone from just nice to almost needed in order to be productive with proper time management.
