#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

I, for one, wish the operators of the 3rd party websites and tools the best of luck. I hope the development team at Frontier are able to accommodate a fair and reasonable inclusion of new features that allow for better 3rd party integration. With a lack of in game tools, the 3rd party additions are, simply, invaluable to those who use them.

Without INARA the Engineer grind would go from tedious to unbearable. The reason these 3rd party sites exist is that the game itself doesn't offer enough information.

In a way they are a crutch, supporting weaknesses in the game itself. That said, losing them at this stage would be a disaster.

you're a dev. You create a tool, people start using your tool. then when a lot of peeps are using your tool you withdraw it from them and you set demands.

maybe its not literally blackmail, but it smells of powerplay.

I see it more like they're volunteering.

They've volunteered hundreds of hours.

They don't want to volunteer anymore until the company they are volunteering for gives them a line of communication.

I'm sitting here feeling pretty smug with a nice off-line tool - just jam-packed full with trading and station data...

Opening bids please...

...heads off to <an auction site>....

FDev didnt have to do anything for 3rd party developers at all.

As one of the Admirals coordinating the defense, you've now made my life a living hell

Do you understand what you are saying?

First you say : FDev doesn't have to support 3rd party tools. Fair enough.
Then you say: Without these tools, your life is a living hell.

Which is it?

Anyone complaining about FDev is quite welcome to write their own Space Simulation/MMO/Sandbox/Procedurally generated galaxy game

I don't know about you but I don't know how to build a car.

Yet if I could down the dealership and drop a few thousand pounds on a car it should work and dang will I complain if it doesn't work.

The idea that one needs to know how to complete a task with master skill in offer any criticism is a logical falacy. I would agree one needs some knowledge of the field to offer any meaningful criticism, but I hardly need to know how to program the bgs if I can clearly see certain functionality is a missing from the front end.

If work is created or presented for free as solely on artistic merit that may be one thing, but we're all paying customers here, as much as pilots invested in the hobby of laser space death or star trucking.

The third party apps make the game easier to use and more enjoyable. I support them and I'm very grateful to them for the effort they put into their apps/sites. If FD are not planning to do their own similar apps/sites any time soon then it would be nice if FD did all they could to help those that are making that effort. I can't say I'm 100% sure that this is the way to get FD on your side or to provide the information and help that you want, but if other requests have previously failed then maybe there is no other way. Good luck with your demands - oops, sorry, - requests!

The way i see it is that the API works (barring bugs introduced via patches which FD fix), and its basically these guys have got together and said "We want more, FD aren't giving, let's have a wobbly over it"

Yeah, well, i want more. I want more exploration features, i want better in-game tools, i want some changes to how PvE piracy works, i want, I WANT, I WANT..... but FD are not going to give me what I want just because i stamp my feet over it.

As much as I love the guys who make these tools, they are acting like prima-donnas here.

They can damn well get in line with the rest of us who WANT things.

You're off the charts, mate.
Reason is the other way.

It is possible to play without 3rd party tools. However, the QoL is so poor, for me at least, that I'd rather take a break from ED than suffer through without these critical tools.

Fully support all the 3rd parties, and will log back into ED when the sites are back up.

The difference is, we've given FD money.

The website developers were doing it all for free. (actually at a cost to themselves)

Depends on your play style, of course. The only site I occasionally use is Coriolis. Most days I play the game without 3rd party anythings.

I have between 1 and 3 third party pages open at all times while playing Elite- they're essential for planning, theorycrafting builds, and research.

Frontier should do what EVE Online has done, and create official supported API to enable these kids of tools and the community.
