#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Intregal part of Elite Dangerous 3rd party websites
Totally support 3rd party dev as without it i could not have been able to progress at the initial stages

Full support. What the 3P represents are a group of fans who truly love the game using their own time, resources and skills to make it better. All they've asked for in return is for FD's support. "Help us help you," in effect.

What should concern FD, and everyone who uses these tools to enhance their enjoyment of the game is when the 3P community just says screw it and stops fixing their tools and lets them die out.

Once passion dies, it rarely comes back. If these sites die out, the next generation that comes along might not be as dedicated.

Don't gut your golden goose, Frontier.

Exactly!

Really?

I think the fact that you say as soon as an API was released you started reverse engineering it to make it do what you wanted it to rather than what Frontier had intended it to do says everything it needs to. So does the fact that people carry on developing things even when they are told by FD that it is forbidden to do so. It doesn't matter does it, they'll change their minds in the end... You want open real time information transfer, FD have always said they don't. Simple. And trying to pretend you would be happy with anything less isn't going to be believed by anyone.

Some of the tools that the community have designed are amazing pieces of work, but to act like you are somehow entitled to the full support and attention of FD is ridiculous. Considering the amount of threads and posts there are on these forums moaning about how FD aren't doing their job properly in creating or designing the game, where exactly do you imagine they're going to pluck this extra dedicated support just for you from?

Now that you say this I seem to remember Slopey one of the 1st tools being asked to not scrape info from the game. He agreed then people started using OCR to update that info. Did any of these sites ever really have permission to scrape data from ED or have they been just doing against Frontiers wishes this whole time?

3rd party creators should stop being so childish.

If they want support, they should charge a subscription to players that use the services.. simple.

Unfortunately I was born in a time, where you had to figure stuff out for yourself instead of reading guides and being told how to play the game.

Duh! There not looking for money as support, they are looking for data!
The game is severely lacking in data access to game players.
Third party tools help to alleviate what FDev does not provide.

That the APIs are insufficient, or broken, it's in Frontier's best interest to communicate AND FIX THE ISSUE.

While I respect your opinion, have you ever tried to get in touch with anyone in Frontier? It's a mess, they are either extremely understaffed or under order to keep silent.... all the time. Even the Marketing department is answering 1 of 4 email. So yeah stomping is good, Frontier needs us third party, you need us, and we need to have a forum discussion with frontier.

To those who took down their sites: I believe you've successfully made your point and achieved your goal of drumming up support for yourselves, so why not bring the sites back online during Mr. Wagar's upcoming big event?

I'm not suggesting this for my own benefit, as I won't be participating in said event. But I think you are harming him and all of the event's organisers, not to mention the participants, for something which is in no way their fault.

question to the OP..

Why do this 'Strike' action over PEAK ED play time (Bank Holiday Weekend (UK))? Surely this has maximum impact on us your customers leading to maximum irritation to your cause? Instead of going for the jugular straight away, would it not be prudent to try a series of 1 day strikes at non peak time to try get FD to a meaningful discussion point?

point.. over head...

Just what I was thinking.
I'm for them, just not over this weekend!!!

So much this!

The 3rd party developers have my full support. If it wasn't for my discovery of Inara, I can honestly say I would not still be playing the game today. How many sales has Frontier made as a result of these 3rd party tools, without giving much of anything in return? It's a two-way street. Yes, it's a pain for those who use these tools on a regular basis, but it's only for a few days, and we'll come out of it better off in the long run. We all want the game to improve and get better and we all need to stick together to make that happen.

Goodness, what a show of solidarity. It really makes you realize just how many of us rely on these tools. I bit only real newbies don't actually use them. I've been using EDDB and Coriolis almost since I started the game!

While I greatly appreciate 3rd party sites, and what they do to enhance the game, I do not agree in the manner that you are asking for help.

Did you read the timeline in the OP where they've been trying to work with Frontier at least since January 2015? Clearly asking for support in other ways is not working…

P. S. You have an Inara badge in your signature. =)

I fail to see how taking down the sites for 3 days...just 3 days is all that extreme.

And Kerrash, I love your enthusiasm but you seem like you are someone who gets a lot of support and interaction from Frontier. Seems the 3rd Party Tool developers, who have done a lot to keep people involved with the game for the long term, are feeling ignored and outright disrespected.

You have to recognize how this is frustrating, especially when Frontier shows signs of wanting to work with the 3rdparty dev community with the Journal and other things but then doesn't back it up and makes it seem like they really don't want to support them.

Frontier needs to step up and either support them or don't (and shutdown the API). This in-between crap is wholly unprofessional in my opinion.

I remember using screenshots, and OCR, and at the time was deemed fine, as it didn't "hook" into the game itself.
But again, FD's communication was terrible.
