#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Showing my support for third-party tool sites as I use them all the time while I am playing this game.
The complete lack of search features and the complete lack of data about engineers in the game as well as the complete lack of data about stations, trade data and the inability to filter or prioritize (an encyclopedia, if you will) means that third party sites are completely necessary.

Wanting to know what materials are needed for an upgrade, or wanting to know all of the closest bodies which can supply a material such as polonium or Technetium, wanting to know all of the closest stations which supply a particular commodity and then delving into said station statistics before arriving is not cheating. Expecting players to keep their own records (a la 1984) is short-sighted and the reason is that we all know what technology can do now, and expect our in-game technology to be somewhat analogous to it.

It isn't. Tools are necessary.

Moonweb out.

This.

I tend to suffer from anxiety, especially when I can't understand something and I do not have the skills/ability to find help online without these third party sources. I almost gave up on Elite: Dangerous a while ago because the game can be so overwhelming, especially with so many big content changing updates. I was able to progress and enjoy Elite: Dangerous since then thanks to the many third party sites but now I doubt I'll even be able to play much until the site come back up again. I place no blame on the third party sites for this, I completely understand their frustration and hope their pleas are heard.

Video-games have created a unique community, as a developer ignoring them does more harm than good.

Bit gutted it has had to come to this.

If I have E D running (which is most days,) then so is Inara. Nearly as often is eddb and anything to do with ships its E D Shipyard. Fantastic free to use software that I am of no doubt greatly improve my experience of Frontiers game. Even acquired a 2nd monitor a few years ago because they have become integral to me playing the game... or even peruse when I should be working.

Full support in making a stand. Well done on getting all together, I hope you can finally have some constructive communication with Frontier to allow you to keep on with all your sterling efforts supporting our Elite Dangerous community.

BTW if you don't actually use the tools being mentioned in the OP.. WHY THE *** ARE YOU EVEN COMMENTING IN THIS THREAD??????????

I fully understand 3rd tools developper's frustration! FDev do something for them! I know that I would have stopped playing ED without these wonderful tools... It is so useful for exploration, trading, engineering! It makes ED so much better!

+1 support 3rd party developers. But not to the detriment of game development schedules.

I think striking this weekend was a bad decision and does come across as trying to cause as much disruption to the players as possible. This weekend is supposed to be a fun and exciting time for Elite Dangerous. I hope this doesn't impact the weekends experience for any of players like myself that rely heavily on your tools.

For two years I have played Elite Dangerous and used all manner of third party tools. I was shocked to see them offline today.

Bit gutted it has had to come to this.

I've watched the frustration fester over the past two years. The journal was a beacon of hope but it seems FDev is not committed to it. In that case, they never should have offered it in the first place. Don't start what you can't finish.

No idea why people are saying it hurts the weekends event. I see zero correlation.

People are complaining for various reasons, probably mainly because people enjoy using those sites and find them useful. I know i do! It will be slightly annoying for me knowing my EDSM data isn't being uploaded, or that i'm not getting nice tips on the BGS state and commodity prices from EEDI.

Overall, a rather sad state of affairs and I sincerely hope they never do anything like this again.

So your take then is that after working for hours, for free, all the time and energy (have YOU ever donated to the site??) and the repeated requests to FDev, your take is that they should simply shut up, roll over and get kicked in the nuts?

Seriously? You can't see FD doing anything wrong, can you? This is all the fault of the 3rd party devs - nothing in your eyes puts FD at fault at all when this is clearly a problem they created themselves.

But stomping your feet like petulant children is just going to burn bridges. :(

Doesn't appear that there any bridges at the moment - which is the problem.

I've used most of these websites/ programs but mainly EDSM and EDDiscovery which I find very useful.

I agree with the sentiment of the 3rdparty developers as this has been rumbling on without resolution for ages, but I do think this is the wrong way to go about it even though I understand the frustration that has caused this action to be taken.

It does, however, seem to have solicited some sort of response from Fdev.

Support Third Party Tools!

Every time I discover a new Third party tool or feature in a tool I've been using, I gain more appreciation for the game. Third Party developers ease the burden of FDev to provide in-game tools. Elite would be VERY difficult to play effectively without the third-party community. PLEASE SUPPORT THE API

I fail to see how taking down the sites for 3 days...just 3 days is all that extreme.

And Kerrash, I love your enthusiasm but you seem like you are someone who gets a lot of support and interaction from Frontier. Seems the 3rd Party Tool developers, who have done a lot to keep people involved with the game for the long term, are feeling ignored and outright disrespected.

You have to recognize how this is frustrating, especially when Frontier shows signs of wanting to work with the 3rdparty dev community with the Journal and other things but then doesn't back it up and makes it seem like they really don't want to support them.

Frontier needs to step up and either support them or don't (and shutdown the API). This in-between crap is wholly unprofessional in my opinion.

It's just this event on the 29th which has been in preparation for a year. I'm all for communication between the 3rd partys and Frontier but this is a protest to try and sabotage this weekend's event and my concern is that they will never do another event because of it.

I can see that if the Frontier bashing continues, they'll stop communicating all together (see NMS) and in the worst case, stop E : D after 2.4.

I just bought a Beluga and I can't for the life of me find a 7A fsd for it without these websites. Although it is a mild inconvenience for me right now I fully support the people who work on these sites because without them this game would be nearly unplayable.

It's really a small request in the scope of this game

When I started playing Elite over a year ago now I was completely lost in a lot of ways. Learning all the flight controls and the in's and out's of the game made for an enjoyable week or so while I tried it out and found my way. I am all for discovery in games this way. It's a good way to learn. Then it came time to start playing and for awhile I just did what any beginner did. Ran missions, collected bounties etc. When it came time to get new ships I was introduced to coriolis.edcd.io a wonderful site for configuring and building ships before spending any in-game money learning how to best configure and what would work and wouldn't work. I have since used this site for all other ship builds I have created. When it came time to try my hand at mining I used another site that tracks pristine sites around the galaxy, http://edtools.ddns.net/ It's also been a great tool. And finally, when it came time to begin my trading career I used eddb.io to help me find the most lucrative runs to help build my credit balance until I was, as I consider in this game, well established. All these 3rd party sites were/are created and maintained by fans of the game. They add a level of service and abilities that are just not available in the game by default. They obviously could be but frontier Dev's have their own goals to achieve and keep the main story on track.

Now it has come time for my oldest son to join me among the stars and he is eager and I rely heavily on these sites to help him while he learns the in's and out's of the game as I did. I am able to guide him better with the available information from these sites.

What these 3rd party sites ask for is very little. They just want to be kept in the loop and have a line of communication to FD so they can make the game better. It would take a small amount of time to send out an update to people about changes coming in the API's that may affect their sites. The other side of the problem is the communication lines between FD and 3rd party Devs. I think FD would benefit from having this level of creator input in their game.

Now that you say this I seem to remember Slopey one of the 1st tools being asked to not scrape info from the game. He agreed then people started using OCR to update that info. Did any of these sites ever really have permission to scrape data from ED or have they been just doing against Frontiers wishes this whole time?

After they asked us to not scrape data we all used OCR until the point when FDev said it was ok to use the companion API

I hope it does effect this weekend.

Drew was told by the community he should delay the event to get all the platforms fixed. He's going ahead anyway even though Xbox is still broken and wont be fixed till after the event.

FD is all of a sudden interested in fixing 3rd party relationships where they were not before.

Both FD and Drew brought this on themselves.

FDev needs to take a page from CCP (Eve Online creators) on community engagement and 3rd party tools. They have a well defined policy, an API strongly documented, and a team responsible for communicating with developers of 3rd party apps.

I currently play E:D only beacuse of meta-game items. If the Fuel Rats and the Galactic Mapping Project did not exist, I would stop playing. These groups represent some of the most dedicated and important players for FDev. They keep the game interesting and bring in fresh players through a community which the game itself has not been able to provide.
