Newcomer / Intro Soooo frustrated!

Thanks Malc. I can say one thing for sure is the community for the game as been great. Everyone is more that willing to answer questions and help out us newcomers. I'm going to try combat for the first time this weekend I think so that will be a new experience for me. Thankfully I have read all the tips before I started playing and realized the value of insurance. My first couple hours into the came in the sidewinder I jumped out a little to far and ran out of fuel, so I got to listen to my character suffocate to death, that was pretty interesting.

Thanks for the advice all. As to the prior message, I didn't catch the 'welcome mission' and would gladly start again (as I haven't made ANY progress) but on the Xbox One there is no "Clear Save" option in the Options screen. I deleted the save games but when I restarted I was back where I left off - like the save was on the Frontier servers? Weird. Any advice here?

As you can see, there are many routes you can follow to progress. Many people like the pew-pew-pew of bounty hunting and many like less action-packed pursuits.

You should have received a "welcome mission" when you first started which gives you 10,000 Cr to get started. If you missed that in your communications UI window (or it didn't appear) and you are seriously low on cash, you can always just "Clear Save" (from main menu options) and start again.

By increasing the range of your starter sidewinder you can move further afield and take on more missions. The welcome mission reward should allow you to at least fit a better FSD and more missions completed will let you fit an even better FSD and soi on.

It does seem a bit daunting at first but stick with it and you will soon find yourself enjoying the Elite Dangerous galaxy.

I ran out of fuel myself, 6 jump trip with 4 tons of cargo ... I ended up blowing up by going too close to the star on purpose and trying to start the FSD. Rebuy was a couple thousand, and I still had the mission I was trying to do (boom data), so I just repeated empty and JUST made it there. Fuel scoop would have saved me for sure, but it was an easy recovery.

I posted this as a reply in another thread but not sure anyone will see it there.

I can't do ANY of these things! This is the craziest game I've ever played!
I've played a lot of games over the years, but I've never seen anything like this. Who would make a game where you can't even get started?! I can't take any missions, I don't qualify. I can't accept anything in the lounge, I don't qualify. I don't have enough space to trade or mine anything worthwhile in my Sidewinder.
I've done all the training and now I'm starting and have been to about 5 different "places" and either I don't qualify or I can't get to the locations necessary ('Boom' missions), too far, don't have enough fuel.

What the hell am I missing here? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Little wing, don't be broken. It gets better. The dumbdown start becomes charming... eventually. Wait till you get your hands on a Cobra, Asp, Python, Cutter...

If you're the sociable type you could try joining an open crew. There's a category specifically for mentoring new players. I've only hosted crews so I'm not sure exactly how you join an open one but it's all in your comms panel at the top left. That should get you some seed money and a chance to chat with and observe an experienced player, which should set you up quite nicely at the end of the session.

Edit: just don't shoot anything unless the skipper tells you to :)

I started out by doing trading because that's what I remembered doing in the original 1984 Elite game. It's a slow way to make much money in your sidewinder but you'll soon learn about the different economies and which are best for supplying or selling what commodities. You're not likely to learn this from missions unless you're looking at the commodity markets while you're doing them.

When you first start playing Elite: Dangerous, if you start at LHS 3447, you should get prompted for an easy data delivery mission. It pays a pretty good sum to help get you started in the game.

Remember: There is more to do than just the mission board. You don't need to take a bounty hunting mission to go bounty hunting. You can make plenty of money fast in a stock Sidewinder by simply entering a High Security Resource Extraction Site. Simply follow the System Authority ships around, wait for them to bring a criminal ship down to about 10% hull and then start shooting the same target. You just need to get one hit in on the criminal to be awarded the bounty. An hour or two of this can generally net you enough income to fully A-rate that Sidewinder.

There are plenty of videos on the internet about "Getting Started in Elite: Dangerous". Though most of them are pretty dated they should still apply for the most part.

I was able to run data courier missions until I could get small cargo delivery missions. Within a few hours, I was in a Hauler moving more stuff. I just kept doing more and more, upgraded to a T-6, another day or two got me a Dolphin and a Cobra MkIII. I just got into RES combat and am trying to feel my way though that.

It's possible. Not laid out with a yellow brick road, but you are also given a contact for starting trade or a combat path with a message sent to you right as you start.

OK - I don't know why you didn't get any replies from an XBox user, (maybe the moderation queue process) so maybe one will notice this and pipe-up with a solution.

Your save / status / progress is held on the servers at F D - it doesn't matter what you do to the files on your machine, the "save" is held remotely.

I don't know if this is true for the XBox but for the PC the process to Clear Save and start again is:

Start game from launcher

At the Main Menu (the first menu) - select Options

in this Options screen at the bottom you should see "Clear Save [######]" - select this

start again... (all stats reset so no insurance claims!).

NB the clear save option is only shown from the Main Menu Options, not the "paused game" Options Menu)

If you restart from a space station you will get a message in your Comms UI panel offering you the mission to go get some money in a nearby system - it will not be in the Missions Board.

For missions, if you have not done so, make sure your cargo racks are full-size. The cargo racks that come with the starter Sidewinder are half-sized, so replace those and your profit from cargo will instantly double.

Early on in the game it is important (because of the Sidewinder's limited jump capability) to make sure the combined mass of ship, cargo and fuel still allows you to travel to your destination before accepting the mission, using the cargo mass slider in the Galaxy map. It is a good idea to refuel your ship first when you dock because the mission board will not offer missions you cannot complete in your ship's current state. The problem is: when you accept a mission while low on fuel and then fuel your ship, the increased mass of the fuel added to your ship after the mission was accepted can render your ship incapable of making the jump to your destination.

I used the "Planet Express Ship" approach to the game, making deliveries to the local systems, using my starting-point station as a base so as to build local faction REP, which leads to more lucrative missions, which leads to moving up in the game, more credits and bigger/better ships. On the subject of bigger, better ships try to resist the urge to buy a new ship just because you can afford the hull, that is a huge credit-sink for new players. Keep upgrading your Sidewinder until you can identify a definite need for (more cargo capacity, more jump range, more weapons, etc.) a different ship. The first thing you should be upgrading on your Sidewinder (after the cargo-racks) is the Frame Shift Drive (FSD). This will give your ship the legs it needs to get you "off the porch" and "out into the neighborhood". Once you get that far you will probably have a handle on the basics and be just as lost as the rest of the long-time players. Welcome!

PS: The Sidewinder is a great ship and can do everything in the game on a micro-scale. Don't sell it! Resist the urge to "trade it in". Initially, try and work your way into a Cobra III, the most common, capable and flexible "small" ship in the game. o7

Just to add (and in no way subtracting form the good advice already given here): what I did after resetting my CMDR was not to try to "upgrade" from the Sidey to a larger ship, but instead upgraded my Sidey. Add Engineers to it, and the maxed out FSD gives you >25 ly jump range, upgraded enhanced drives give you ~600 m/s boost speed, dual rapid fire multicannons give you some punch without making a large demand on the power plant.

How to earn the money? Boom delivery missions, bounty hunting, scanning every new system you jump into and participating on every side in every CG that comes along. Especially the latter - participating in a CG on the lowest level (i.e. help the cops to kill one ship, deliver one tonne of the required cargo) will give you up to 800,000 Cr upon completion of that CG (100,000 Cr for each tier that CG reaches). Times four (2 CGs with 2 sides each - an honest arms dealer will always supply both sides in a conflict :p), and you'll have 3.2 MCr within less than two weeks for next to no effort.

There is also the standard "don't buy what you can't afford" advice too, I've also started keeping my old ships too, it makes sense if you ever end up at the rebuy screen with too little funds to buy back your ship.

It makes that bitter pill slightly more palatable to swallow...

A couple of things I'll add about the starting mission.
It can at times be slow arriving in your inbox. If if doesn't appear quickly, logging off and on again tends to sort it out.
There are now follow on missions from this mission at 4 academies, you should get a message about them once you've done the first mission.

(I've not tested this in the live version - haven't died yet - but it was there in the Beta.)

Update - "haven't died yet" - Spoke too soon

Lol, am I the only one who abandons the starting mission? 10k credits is a waste of time, especially when Trevithick are often paying you 100k to go in the opposite direction...

My condolences on your recent death Wyaston.
Curiosly whenever I bring up 'dead is dead' or point out that I'm 'still alive' on this forum I die within an hour! It's a curse!

Hi Dibiase, can you (or anyone) tell me what/where the 'welcome mission' is? I've started over twice and can't find anything like that. The only missions I can accept (that I qualify for) are the 'boom' missions, but they are always too far to get to (limited fuel), and I can't even plot a course ("plotting failed"). Is the welcome mission in the missions section, or do you get it from one of the people at the station?

Just thought of something: I'm in 'Solo' play, do you have to be in 'Open' to get the starting mission?

Thanks for any help,

The welcome mission appears in your communications UI - it does not appear in the Missions Board. Open your comms panel and look for the tab with three lines (2nd from right) and the messages appear in there.

You can get it in any mode, Solo, Open or PG.

Thanks, but how do I get a bounty hunting mission (that a "penniless" Sidewinder can qualify for)?

Getting bounties from just killing bad guys. Nav Beacon, signal sources, roid belts, and where the cops and robbers both hang out. Do not get over run.

Ive been playing a few months, have not done a mission yet. I went out and kilt to bad guys, cashed them in, bought an Eagle. Spent a week killing stuff, and collecting the creds.
After a week, I bought a Type-6, rigged it for mining. Upgraded to an AspX, I make about 3 mil an hour. My main gig is flying to and fro, collecting exploration data in a DBX.

I hear there painite in them thar roids, so soon Im off to Colonia, and the frontier.
