#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Not extortion. Just making a tiny little point. We have not got anything yet, except a promise.

It is/was exactly extortion. One you couldn't have pulled off without inciting the forum/reddit posters. "Do our bidding, or lose our sires".

In the end, I want the association to be successful. I will however, remember your actions when I decide, or decide not to, donate to your sites again. It is the height of arrogance to use faithful followers to get your way. I would like to emphasize the word 'use', in the last sentence. Your group did 'use', it's consumers, in the worst possible definition of 'used'.

I do not want FD spending time and resources catering to developers of third party apps. ED needs all the dev help that FD can muster. Third party site operators should be content with what they get and stop trying to disrupt FD dev work with calls for attention.

After speaking in private with the OP and other involved community developers, we have all agreed that it was best for the community to bring the websites back up as soon possible. This will be happening simultaneously at 19:00 UTC (where possible) for all the sites.

We have made a commitment to work more closely with the third party developer community to address concerns and support these features which the community use and value on a daily basis.

These ongoing communications will include developers from other third party websites who may be interested, not just those listed in the OP. If you are an active and established third party Elite Dangerous developer, get in touch with community@frontier.co.uk

We all hope that clears things up!

Thanks everyone,

Ed

Good job Ed! The community team deserves some cookies for handling this so quick and professional. o7

This isn't about caving, this is about ensuring future conversations happen so things like this don't happen again. We made an agreement and discussed things in a considered and calm way. We saw the original post for what it was, an important discussion topic for us to get involved in. We have expressed that we feel it could have been handled differently, and we all agreed that communication is key in future!

That's a nice response Ed, but seriously you might as well just pull the API. It will never be good enough for them. How long before we're back here again? Or have they also made a commitment to respect the views and stance of FD and not take it to the forums again?

Ed with all due respect to the hard job you have with issues like this. It was caving. It was brought to forums and reddit like this with one intent, to cause a backlash to force FD to give in to their demands. Like others pointed out here I would call it extortion that they pulled and now they know it works, it will happen again whether by them or anyone else that wants to get their way

I fully support this action! Almost all PC games have third party tools which enhance the experience but I must say, much of what I use these tools for should be in game; I'd even like it if it was an official mobile app that was designed to be second screen. The idea that I have to go to a third party site just to find out where to get commodities or pristine rings is really strange.

If folks don't like the way this was handled, they can just not use the tools.

However, a large contingent of people care very much about the tools and what they add to the game for them. A big enough group that could sway opinion or gain attention.

eh, you watch.

After this weekend and Drew's event, FD will go right back to ignoring those guys until they need them for their next event.

Why not? I mean, other than creating a headache for you mods, why shouldn't someone leverage a community to drive an agenda if that community is willing to carry it for them? The community isn't some sacred body to be treated with some sort of senatorial decorum.

It creates more than a headache, it feeds on the animosity and anger that has been building up recently and exploits that. From the OP's perspective it makes perfect sense, that doesn't change the fact that I have an issue with it. People are free to agree or disagree with me as they wish.

I totally support the dev community in their actions here and I am also overjoyed at the response from Frontier.
Let's make this work people !!!
:)

I would like to once again interject on the subject of how mindblowing it is that the people accusing Frontier of "caving" or even more absurdly, "giving in to terrorists" seem to literally have no idea how a strike works. Direct action gets the goods!

Every so often, something like this happens to restore my faith in humanity.

And people say FDev doesn't have much regard for their community - ha.

Bravo, Ed, bravo.

Personally, I love what these guys have done with these tools. I couldn't have done half the things I've done in game without them.

Ed, it's heartening to see your personal endorsement and I can understand your disappointment in "how it was happened", but I don't blame them one iota.

You backed them into a corner. The OP's 'timeline' paints a very clear and compelling picture of repeated neglect and this response was unfortunately required to get your attention... FDEV needs to own this.

Here's to hoping FDEV makes good on your assurances because FDEV's past behavior is not encouraging.

The community is watching.

You can't donate you our program. We don't accept money.

After countless hours asking them for a little bit of help, i'm afraid the guys patience was exhausted. And we have tried and tried to engage. We don't actually want very much, just some advanced notice if they are going to change things, and a way of reporting bugs back which is not lost in QA.
