At Lavecon, the Viper was confirmed as being the Mark 3, not the Mark 2. Frontier have a typo in the all the current media promoting the ship.

I think we can see a python here between the asp and the anaconda.

If my eyes don't deceive me, doesn't it say 'Fer-de-Lance'(!!!)
next to that ship? (*Edit* There seem to be three distinct blocks of text next to the name to me, and several of the fiction authors have described Fer-de-Lances as 'big' ships - bigger than the Cobra or the Viper anyway. That chart also shows quite nicely the size of the Asp to the Cobra. want. want. want. )Also, what is to the left of the Asp? Another Lakon ship?

Yes that was the reason of this thread. I love that Viper. I have a shot in my ED library of its interior layout too. To be honest I have become totally fixated on that ship... I LOVE it.
But apparently that picture is the old 88 (see the decal on the engine pod). It apparently is replaced by the new model.
I like the new model a lot. I think it is one of the best designs so far, but it does look like a smaller version. I would love it if both variants were kept in the game. They are both beauties.
The original could be a bigger/heavier version with more cargo space and hard points. The police and border patrols could use it as a heavy patrol craft, with prison holds and room for troopers. In size the ship could be somewhere in between a Cobra and a Lakon
The newer version looks like a ship that is more the size of a Cobra. I expect that cockpit to be a two-seater.
The old model can be seen in several official FD vids where it is flown by the developers including David Braben himself. (He calls it a Viper mark II by the way)
I feel it would be cool to have both ships in the game.
But that won't happen I suppose.
It could be the cockpit design of the first one that gives a misleading impression of its size. But we also have the shots of its roomy interior.
Come to think of it in the videos I watched the old model seems about the size of a Cobra. It is difficult to make an estimation.
Perhaps the cockpit of the new model is larger than estimated.
Oh well, I will just have to wait and see... and accept FD's decision on this.
They are both superb designs anyhow. So whatever happens we will get a beautiful new ship in the game.

I too hope this bigger Viper ship makes it into the game. I think it's by far the best looking coolest ship I've seen for the game yet. I'll be well disappointed if we can't get to fly it in game.
Yep - these are in the 'Edge' magazine preview, though from the ship chart in that article the Type 6 is tiny (Sidewinder/Hauler size) and the 7 is bigger than the Asp, but smaller than the SpaceCow. The Lakon ships chart in the article also implies that the Asp is one of the family too (there is similarity in the Asp profile with that of the Cow). Still I don't recognise the ship to the left of the Asp.

Actually the picture that is shown for a viper on the wiki page is not exactly the same they develop/ work in progress, according to the picture I saw in private backers forum.
It does not have the top wings and are more compact in design. More defined cockpit and also antennas and scan items in the front.
Not the same ship, if you are talking about the new images that have just been shown. I think you are talking about the WIP image of the Viper MkIII, it is not the same ship.

On wiki it says mk2 but it have never been the devs intention to do a mk2.
However the concept art that is shown on wiki is a mk3 (even if they labelled it wrong mk2). And its an early concept art. The one they are working on is slight differ

No. it wont be any mk2.
it will be an mk3. That's what they planned for release.
The concept art people have posted here or that is shown on wiki is not the same as they plan to do. it looks similar but there are a few changes to it.
( still wonder why they did not put in the new concept art in the newsletter as they did whit the hauler)

Well I still would rather have the original concept ship than the current implementation.
Edit: The above is not really what I wanted to say. If we were to only have one or the other I would rather have the original concept art. The smaller version looks cool and I like it, but I would still LOVE to own the original concept art version. So having both in game would be ideal.

That Viper mk 2 concept ship appears size wise to be 4 or 5 times larger when compared to the new Viper mk 3. Maybe the bigger Viper ship will also be ingame at a later date, perhaps as a mk 4 version instead.
