First of its kind. Hopefully not the last.

Erimus asked me to post my write up (wall of text) I put on the Formidine Rift thread. So here we go...
...Commander Hyford asked me if she was dead as she had vanished from the game and his friends list...
E]

Thanks for the other intel yesterday Saool. My thoughts are similar and I was flying in a wing of three all the way from 46 Eridani.

I was amazed how almost every system had commanders in it en-route and certain waypoints had 15+ - there must have been so many people online.

That said there were no interdictions for us (except one NPC one) and I have the feeling most people were wondering what to do - not surprising as this hasn't really happened before.

Somehow I think it was hampered by the inability to tell friend from foe in super cruise. If it had been based on pledged powers then we could have easily started ID-ing & interdicting enemies. It was a shame we could use power play pledge functionality to do this...
I understand the plot wouldn't allow this but the mechanics meant it took too long typing messages asking people which side they were on and them prevaricating - or not even sure themselves.

I did enjoy the whole experience in the round but I feel we can do MUCH better next time (aliens?).

I hope this proves a prompt for some more of this type of thing - maybe for player groups also to get semi-official events of a similar nature?

Shout out to Megalos & the wing from yesterday!

I would like to chime in on this briefly. For me as a lover of lore and narrative gameplay the 'grande finale' was an amazing event, especially when you take into consideration the rather limited toolbox for mass events and FDev's outright statement that they "never did such a thing before". When you compare fleet mechanics and instancing/node population with EVE for example, you cannot do otherwise than being surprised this could be pulled off at all.

I wished FDev had tested their 'mass event mechanics' an another topic or event first and not have pushed for such a dramatic finale with such an iconic character. A nice large scale battle between Imps and Feds would have been a better start to measure the stability in such circumstances, but so be it. One damsel down, many more to go.

However, my main concern is the community; or better the lack thereof. Starting with PAC discord and ending with the event aftermath forum wars, I am absolutely flabberghasted how malicious, malcontent and spiteful some people treat others. How ready some are to jump to all kinds of insult, 'alternative facts' and outright lies in order to promote onself or elevate oneself by negrepping others. Is this the best we can do? Is a game event really worth insulting dozens of other players who just want to take part in the story from their angle of view? Have we become so primitive and brutalized as to sling mud and fecies at everybody else whose point of view we don't like?

This makes me shudder, and this is what truly diminished my experience. You should go away for at least a week and be ashamed of your demeanor.

I would like to say more about this event but the forum logs me off before I can say what I'd like, so this will be the brief version.
.
Thank you to Drew for trying this. I consider the event a success. There is a dramatic ending to the book and with three of the protagonists surviving the players also get key information (and get it known in a wider context than the Formidine Rift thread). It sets the scene for what is coming, without giving very much away.
.
I don't have time to get into the good and the bad in detail. It was educational but I am now more wary than ever of player groups in ED. I nevertheless come out of it with some useful flying practise, some ships that are better-engineered than they otherwise would have been and a few additions to my friends list. The best part is being able to say that I was there, that I managed (albeit very briefly) to get into an instance with Salomé and was in the same system as Raan (albeit not in the same instance) and that I managed to avoid behaving like a jerk, which was basically what my instructions were. I was supposed to interdict anyone with weapons within 1000ls of a star at my assigned waypoints or on the route. I used my best judgement. DBXs with pulse lasers are not a threat. An Anaconda with all its hardpoints equipped with mine launchers would have just laughed at me had I interdicted them. I had my finger on the FSD interdictor button a couple of times in case a suspicious ship made a false move but I know many players like to carry weapons so I did not presume hostility. I asked a couple of people about whether certain ships were a problem. Only once did I encounter a ship, a Clipper, that I felt needed to be interdicted but they high-waked before I was able to get into position (I reported them to a friend in the system they jumped to, so they would have had a few people ready for them when they arrived, hopefully).
.
Salomé's death is a big loss to the game. As a character, I always felt sorry for her, being put into horrible situations and manipulated and used by others. I suppose I am now both relieved that her life is over, so that she never has to endure the pain, the betrayal, the blame, the guilt and all the rest of what she has been through again and at the same time saddened that I will not see her overcome those things and rise above it all. She had greatness. In life she was certainly divisive but perhaps in death she will become a force for unity.
.
The storyline to the game and Buckyball Racing is what keeps me playing these days. Very early on I made the decision that I wanted to role-play my character a little more seriously than I do in other MMOs, so I'm always asking the question: what is my character interested in doing today? I have developed her concept enough in my head (and some background notes) that I can answer that for most situations. Now this story arc has closed, there are others, but none of them inspire me as a player to the same extent. The Guardians are interesting - but they're all dead: there are no inspiring characters. I would be scouring ruins and the logs are all known, even if I did find new settlements. Generation Ships are interesting, if any have living crews, or founded unknown settlements. Then there are the Thargoids. Where do they come from - I can't search permit-locked regions (where I suspect they are based)? So now I ask 'Where do I go from here?'
.
Yes, this is the brief version.
.
Thanks once again to Drew, FD, CoR and the helpful people I've met in game. o7

The event was a blast, and stressful. Over the weeks we planned and planned. So much work and dedication went into building a powerful force. I truly couldn't have this alone. It started with picking escorts for Yuri. Then the process of reaching out to various player groups began. Slowly members from various groups began to trickle in, and over time more and more began showing up, each one rearing to go, and ready to fight for the truth. None of this I could have done alone.

Days passed and there we were, sitting in 46 Eridani. Myself, and my three escorts: StormyStephen, Azriel Dirge, and RedRyderr. All of us unsure how it all would go. Would we survive this mission? We had received numerous reports of two of the deadliest PVP players sitting in wait for us along the route. We had a plan, and intended to stick to it. Our QRF waited outside of 46 Eridani waiting for their order to begin moving with us. 1800 hit and the journey began. Tension filled the air, but our point man Azriel Dirge took charge and led us like a true professional. He maintained calm and led myself and the other escorts through with little trouble. About five jumps in we began to notice two ships following. An Asp and a Diamondback. A warning was issued to them to stay back, and for a moment they complied with orders. A while later they reappeared. A quick order to the QRF ended that problem. It was smooth sailing for a while, that is until we hit the bubble. Scouts confirmed a hostile was inbound. Soon he caught up to us, but with quick thinking Stormy, one of my escorts interdicted him and forced a high wake out of him. Smooth sailing again.

Instancing issues were had during a few points, and an almost very close call with another hostile. We call him Ultra. He's the epitome of chaotic neutral. We encountered him in system chasing Mobius, our 3rd fleet commander. At one point panic was had when we dropped into a system filled with unknowns, in an attempt to get away quickly I cooked my ship some trying to escape. Ultimately it led to numerous FSD malfunctions. Ultra eventually caught up and led us on a mad dash into the bubble. After some time of buckyballing it we lost him after the QRF team and Fleet 1 stalled him. Low on fuel, and a severely malfunctioning FSD we made the decision to drop at an outpost to repair and refuel my courier.

Things began looking up after we hit Alpha Centauri. After passing the waypoints we ordered 1rst and 2nd fleets, along with the QRF to begin to move forward and clearing the path for us. We proceeded forward toward Tionisla, where we were redirected to Teorge. Once we hit Teorge it became quite obvious that we would prove victorious in our mission. After a few instancing issues and planets getting in the way we found ourselves down to just two listening posts left to scan. I dropped into the second to last to find myself face to face with a random Anaconda! I think it scared both of us with how close we were. I quickly boosted away, leaving the Anaconda in the vapor trail of my 750 m/s Courier. Miraculously at 22 clicks out you can still scan the posts. We scanned the last and notified Erimus.

Amidst the joviality of having completed the mission, there was still a somber air. We were at best halfway there when the news of Salome's death reached us. It was a tragic thing to learn that a person that meant so much to those of us in the Children of Raxxla was gone. While sad, I knew that the mission was still a priority. She wouldn't have wanted us to lay down and weep, she would have yelled and ensured that we complete the mission.

I think I will have to pull some of our Xbox commanders in to share their stories.

Yes , drew lied!

Already the xbox player could influence nothing in the present case.

Is in addition the information of teorge was already known! ....
The most funny "drew" is to hear you say that the beacons was already ...

If drew had told the truth, then we would have known that ONLY salome had a REAL information to give! ! Or rather to bring back since the other stays already in ( teorge).

Instead of that ! We were made to believe that the information was unique and given to 4 character, the mission was therefore only one arrived here , if that was possible !!!!! ...

SO !
We chose to play the game, to divide ourselves to save the server ... (T_T)
Drew chose to change the rules, may, after the game .... (^_^).

To finish successful mission! 1200 participants! 0 gain! And a book? that's right ?
The best blow of pub (with nothing) of all time. Gg drew!

I can see people who love!
Drew, you're a genius!

To make an end
Is to make nothing!
Exept a book. $$$

I have been asked to write a little about the XBOX Premonition event from an organiser's perspective, so here is the CoR debrief and a few of my own thoughts from another thread.

Debrief

Cmdr JT442 reporting.
XBOX Premonition Allies Operations
CoR Intelligence Unit
Salome’s Shadow
Deep Recon X Command Team

The EXO training discord was used to become the XBOX Premonition Operations hub, with the assumption that the interest in the event would be relatively low. We had set up a separate server, but was deemed to have no purpose and more hassle than enough to get everyone transferred from the training rooms to a new server. At this point we had about 100 commanders in attendance with two weeks to go. I volunteered to lead the support fleet, with the other organisers forming a close protection wing. (I have no PvP experience). I also approached Military Militia to lend a hand - they certainly earned their place in CoR’s roll of honour!

As soon as the event started gaining forum presence, we were inundated with commanders - a stream which needed to be security screened before being allocated to a fleet. We eventually totalled 790 commanders in the discord with a further couple of hundred tagging along with various factions. With two days left to run, we caved in to the ‘100% inclusion’ thing and opened a ‘Yuri Supporters’ role of unverified commanders.

The event itself was quiet for the most part with all of the action being with Yuri’s instance. Only 3 named hostiles were reported, with a total of 10 un-named potential hostiles or complete innocents getting in the way. Most combat was blue on blue.

The plan was followed almost to the letter with all of the fleets dropping in behind Yuri after Waypoint 3. The only incident occurred when several commanders disobeyed orders and followed Yuri to the final destination. 99% of commanders never saw combat and believe they were led on a wild goose chase of patrols…. The other option available would have been to park them in one system for 4 hours.

We succeeded in getting Yuri to his destination - all of the Admirals played a major part, and none of them shouted at me for seemingly random orders to fill in time while we waited for Yuri to show up. For me, the stars of the show were the close protection team - Stormy, Az and Red, and Military Militia for providing close support.
I believe we fulfilled the given criteria of inclusion for all, and succeeded in the mission itself. Our main problems were instancing, lack of in-game comms (Discord works really well though) and lack of enemies. Boredom was the biggest problem. If FDev had dropped a Cap ship into Tionisla, it would have been amazing.

The Event from an Organiser's POV

For those of you who were part of the XBOX Premonition Discord channel, hopefully I shouldn't need an introduction. I was one of those responsible for leading the event. Hopefully the following statement should make things clearer and allow FDev to take on board some of the comments. I should state that these are my PERSONAL observations, and not those of any player faction.

From the outset we knew that we would have a communication problem. In game comms are sketchy at best, so we would have to rely on a third party system. discord was deemed to be the most suitable application because of its ease of access, ability to group people into an organisational structure and the ability to make everyone aware of orders when they arrived.

Initially we had estimated that the interest would be quite low. We quietly planned for a total of 100 XBOX participants. In the end, our total was 790.

We had a balancing act to do - Operational Security vs Commander inclusion. We knew that this would be an event which would exclude a lot of people. To that end we put the server invite in the public domain as much as we could. The one issue we had is that we also knew that the 'enemy' would also infiltrate the server and see what our plans were. We had to background check almost everyone. In the end, we gave up and created a 'Yuri Supporter' role so that ANYONE who wanted to participate could do so, in essence creating a new fleet of people potentially hostile to Yuri...

We did not have the same no-guns rule as the PC guys, BUT we did try to keep a safe distance from Yuri. His close protection detail were a bit twitchy and we tried to avoid blue on blue as much as possible. There was only one instance where it went a little wrong and I had to make a snap decision to get a whole fleet out of the way. Sorry guys - Barnards Star was a minor diversion tactic.

For operations, we also had to make the same balance. We elected to keep Yuri and his close guard as separate to everyone else as we could. That scheme would minimise hostile involvement. But then what to do with everyone else? The three main fleets would clear the route of hostiles while the Supporters' fleet would maintain a shield around the assumed final destination. Which brings us on to the next statement..

We didn't know where we were going until during the event. 90% of the movements were constructed on the fly. We had a rough plan, and it worked to a point. The final destination was not relayed until we knew Yuri had almost completed his task. This made it somewhat difficult to position large groups of people where they could still get to the final destination without compromising the mission. In the end it turned out that the ending was a bit of a damp squib, and there was no major announcement of Thargoid invasion.. just a few beacons which had already been found.......

I can also confirm that Fleet 3 was NOT a bait fleet. We became the vanguard in a huge sprawl of people, BUT accidentally caught up with the lead.. Fleet 2 also did the same. Sorry there was no enemy on the day.

In summary -

Technical issues
- instancing. Soft limit of 16 per instance before lags kill the servers (well done to the group of 24!)
- lack of in-game comms
- lack of alternate FD comms. If FD built a discord type server, it would be brilliant.

Event issues
- lack of information to organisers for OPSEC reasons.
- Organisers (me included) not prepared for the scale of the event
- Too many people complaining about not being included. There was plenty of time and lots of notice. We did try.
- Lack of involvement for those who WERE included - we could only work with what we had. Battlefield decisions were made. 99% worked.
- No enemies showed up... we were expecting hundreds. We had less than 10. I can only name 3....

You may not like the way it was run, BUT 790 people were involved and we won.

Well done to everyone who took part. It was an interesting experience.

Next time there is a big event like this I suggest Frontier Devs update the Functions menu to include an Event Faction option.

That way, we can all pick which side we are on, visibly in the radar, without having to form out of game groups by necessity. Wth either 'smart rounds' during the event so that team-mates can't be harmed, or the normal hostile flag on friendly fire.

That would stop the huge amount of bitterness which surrounded the 'join the discord group or die' feeling that much of the socially linked community had. I appreciate this wasn't intended.

Flags though. Flags please Devs for better future event feelings. The flames are still burning about the Discord requirement, just as much as the feeling that HPs part in the event was scripted and planned.

Repped. The Xbox contingent does sound like it was probably more cordial than on the PC.

I'm glad to hear this. I think a lot of bitterness (obviously not all) on the forum would have been avoided had the PC PAC leadership had not been insistent on this.

My first post obviously offended some snowflakes or frontier doesn't like being called out and didn't get posted. So, I will lessen the sting for the poor babies.

There was no player inclusion unless they had ties to the organizers and the top wings. The next time something like this happens I will be reporting any of you that try to prevent anyone on Xbox from being a part of either side. Since Fdev is obviously blind to the situation I'll start informing Microsoft. I would say have a good day, but I wouldn't mean it. So, to Fdev, the event organizers, top wings dealing with this event and the altering if my original msg, may you never reach the horizon. Have a gloriously politically correct life.

Nonsense, IMHO. Propaganda and deception were part of everyone's strategy and there's nothing wrong with that.

FD did not intentionally limit player participation. PAC tried to. In game participation was limited by the instancing, and there are things FD could do in the future to minimize this problem. More later.

But the real story was PAC and their end justifies the means strategy of killing anyone in their way including innocents. This encouraged me to participate, not dissuade me, and I came armed to the teeth against their rules. Also this convinced me that Salome was indeed the terrorist some say she was. Recall that Drew Wagar got on discord to ask PAC to tone it down (which they ignored); but tellingly, Salome did not.

Maybe some sheeple obeyed PAC but I suspect most did not. I think most Elite players have an independent streak. There were other well armed non-PAC ships in my instance. I don't know which side they were supporting, but I have a feeling I would have had competition getting close to Salome.

I wager PACs strategy was recommended by SDC to create as much chaos and confusion as possible if she reached the bubble and started encountering more independent ships. PAC would have been outnumbered, but by players they really shouldn't even pay attention to. That would have served me well.

I disagree with creating some sort of in-game faction allegiance like we have in CZ's. Deception is part of the challenge. Remember there were numerous other groups trying to help Salome that were not part of PAC. A little paint, new ship name, new ID, new "tag" and I'm in.

As for instancing, the problem was even though there were 4 VIPs, only one counted: Salome. The others were red-shirts. It would help next time to have say, 20 VIPs, all trying to cross the Bubble with some sort of cargo or information, and all equally important, with players either trying to help or destroy. And the outcome determined by how many make it.

i had a feeling the game was a specific group's vanity trip but wow... part i like most is how a few developers if not all pose as players and player groups who not only get all the kudos, but aparently command all the action in game (relevant that is), and act like so emotional finding the stuff they release (after a few years of lazy bad develppment nothing like a new pack of bugs and glitches)...so unless you suck serious frontier you aint getting squat! oh and then theres the community of what- are- they? people who no matter how legit is the issue you complain about like the ridiculouos take-years-to-fix bugs the game presents, they will defend frontier and attack a person in forums whathever in the most blind zealous way i mean biased record attempt? on in all seems this game is only awesome to the developers who pose as regular players and the players who become relevant by sucking serious developer the others well.... keep searching raxxla is out x'D

Ever since day one I've been at pains to say that you do not need to buy the book(s). They will not help you gain an advantage in game, they only serve to flesh out the characters and background in a way that will never occur in-game due to the different type of media they represent. Buy the books if you're interested and like reading. Everything you need to actually play is in the game. The story has been told in GalNet and in various points in the galaxy.

your story! i have many of my own already just like many commanders out there who are made irrelevant by your lil vanity trip and uncreative boasting, but nontheless superior in many secret ways! you people should boycott you and your ! frontier posing as players in a glitched algorythm pack i mean GAME!
