Help with Flight

Hi. I just got the chance to play the single player combat and need some help with flight control. I use the red mouse cursor to steer my ship and moving up or down works fine. The problem is that when I move the cursor to steer in any diagonal direction or left or right, the ship starts rolling and doesn't stop until the cursor is returned to the middle position. Is there an option I might have missed to stop the ship from rolling unless I do it manually? I just want the ship to follow the cursor. It's really disconcerting to be flying along and have the ship start rolling. Thanks for any help.

You have several options. Play with the settings more, you can use the "cursor" mode, where you have to return the cursor to the center in order to stop the motion of the ship. There is also the continuous input mode where you have to keep dragging the mouse to produce motion of the ship, so that might be what you're looking for.

I also recommend checking out the roll/yaw transition setup, if enabled small roll input will actually produce yaw motion, so you can use that for those pinpoint sniping shots against distant targets where you need to move the crosshairs just a little and don't need to roll and pitch the ship.

Most control options have pretty descriptive tooltips too. :)

Based on the text I marked above I assume you want something similar to what exists in the X-series of games, Freelancer and similar titles?

If that's the case then that is not part of the game design of Elite. That way of controlling the ship is pretty much like sitting in the cockpit of a ship, point out the window and telling the pilot where to fly. The pilot then actually maneuvers the ship accordingly to accomplish this (by rolling, pitching and yawing the ship). In Elite you are the actual pilot. You are the one who controls the ship and you are the one who need to pitch, roll and yaw (or using lateral thrusters) to get the ship where you want it to go.

The mouse doesn't work as a pointer where the ship should go instead it is emulating a joystick. Moving it forward/back will pitch the ship up/down. Moving it left and right will roll the ship just like a joystick would have.

Thanks for the replies. The option I was looking for is mouse control-pitch/yaw instead of pitch/roll. This approximates what I wanted.

And this is exactly what is called controller agnostic.

Yaw is very slow in the game so it might not be a good idea to use pitch/yaw instead of pitch/roll.

Thanks, Everyone. I think I'm just a crappy pilot. lol. When an enemy gets behind me, I find it difficult to reacquire the target.

In order to have the best maneuverability you need to keep your ship's speed at the maneuverability sweet spot, which is equal to 50% thrust and is indicated by blue markings to the left of the speed indicator. Also applying vertical thrust might help a bit.

pitch/yaw on mouse is good for fine tuning your aim :) put pitch and roll on keys for fast turns as well :)

I'm screwed...

Agreed. Also using the lateral thrusters in combination with the pitch/roll and a backwards loop (push curser to top middle of window, move slightly it off center), can pull some great maneuvers for getting back on the tail of a target.
