THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

Col 70 is huge.... /snip
Yeah, it's about 1,000 ly from front to back if you're at 46 E kind of height. I started roaming the edges of the non-locked parts a little while back to look for any accessible Col 70 systems using pretty much the same method (no joy) and to try and get a visual of their size and shape via EDSM/EDDiscovery. The whole things huge as you say though, so I went off to do the same for another smaller and less complex permit locked sector nearby which isn't as well explored.

Good luck with the searching. If you need somewhere to drop your exploration data there the Witchhead Science Centre. There's also the Orion Nebula Tourist Centre, which has a shipyard and outfitting. The tourist centre's also got a few tourist missions to some sites with good views of the various nebulae.

Barnards Loop is also accessible (I'm not sure whether it ever wasn't or not). The Horsehead Nebula is still locked though.

Also, long range detailed surface scanner upgrade is amazing. I can scan a gas giant from 2,500ls out!
Nice! Need to get me one of those!

Edit Edit: Greatest idea ever, they should just let us claim the Zurara! Not it on cleanup...
Yes! Great idea!

The mystery object in the Rift hinted at has been found. We have guesses at the perpetrators, but what's coming is still a mystery..
Locked away from our prying eyes...
Hidden behind CTD missing content...
In an update that grows distant quarterly like that door at the end of the tunnel that keeps pace with the traveller...

We speculate and throw odd humor, that's the Rifter way.
Citizens of Rifteria... untie!

You'll get no speculation from me until Apollodorus of Athens shows up and explains how all the Greek mythological shizzle points to Teorge ;)

I just checked the first page of this entire thread - looking at the clues related to the mystery of the rift. One states:

'To give a little clue, you are not looking for a specific POI [point of interest] because:
A: That would be naff and dull (and over almost straightaway) B: This is a story you're taking part in, not a 'Find the red key and open the red door' quest."'

According to this, players were supposedly *not* looking for a point of interest. And yet, it appears that actually we were... The point of interest is SYREADIAE JX-F C0 and the ship named 'The Zurara'.

The clue was correct, in other ways - 'it's naff and dull'. While the writer and Frontier tried to make more out of it than a POI, ultimately it just ended up being exactly what the clue said it wouldn't be. It has taken around 3 years to get to this point - drip fed clues about the POI that the 'Rifters' were all searching for. And it resulted in the discovery of a few logs that reveal a hidden conspiracy.

I suppose I don't mind the story, but what I do mind is the fact that the area of the Fromidine Rift is supposed to be mysterious, dangerous - strange sightings and ships disappearing, etc. Yet, in all my time (and probably others experience) there has been nothing of special note about this area of the Rift. The least Frontier could have done was to include some strange phenomenons, sightings of UFOs [alien] , etc. There's nothing, currently, fearful or mysterious about the Rift - it's just another empty part of space with one POI - the The Zurara... [zZzZz] .

Nice synopsis - have +1

Which would be fine if the page we're looking at said "The End". But what it says is "Chapter 4".

I appreciate you point. However, I post the following 'tweet' from Drew Wagar:

'Drew Wagar‏ @drewwagar Apr 29

"To make an end, is to make a beginning." #elitedangerous
'

Hmm, it's looking like 'The End' to me.

Which, by your own argument, is also a beginning. Not sure where you're going with that one.

After the solution, Drew clarified: The mystery is not a POI, but several. Being the master of words that he is, he gave a misleading, but correct clue.

Drew is not the wise old man on top of the mountain sharing his wisdom. He is more like Loki, playing with wisdom and words, to have his fun with us mere mortals. Disclaimer: The latter is meant as a compliment and not as an insult.

Hi folks, as always I appreciate all the comments both positive and negative. I have to say that a being portrayed as an all seeing conspiratorial mastermind with godlike powers over instancing and player groups (though not in this thread I hasten to add) wasn't one outcome I'd come up with. The conspiracy theories are, despite the entertainment value, exactly that.

I set out to build a compelling mystery, write a book that players could influence and not be driven by my own plot-line (hard work for me as I'm a planner by default). I choose open mode because I thought it was the most inclusive option. Perhaps I could have had a 'Rifters' or 'Lore Mode' private group, but it would have been infiltrated and something similar might have happened. That and the additional admin would have been impossible.

The outcome wasn't predetermined, though I had weighted some aspects in order to level the playing field between protagonist and antagonist. Technical limitations are precisely that, there was little I could do about them. Salomé got within six jumps of the destination and died on her feet. Tsu, Yuri and Raan made it, they succeeded. Congratulations to them - they worked hard for that result. Her death at the hands of a player of considerable notoriety wouldn't have been my choice to be honest, but my brief was to write the story of Elite Dangerous, not to enforce my will on the game.

You all took part in this story, you even found those logs before I was ready, so kudos to you. That will be a fun little segue in the book. :)

Many of you have written in with notes of support. That has meant a lot, so thank you. My goal was only ever to provide 'content'. If you enjoyed it - great. If you didn't like it - I have seen the criticism and will note it and improve in future. If you didn't care, well, that's fine too.

This was my event and thus the responsibility is mine.

I'd like to thank you for your contributions. I like the idea of getting a Rifters decal in the game. If that can be arranged, I hope some of you wear it with pride. You all had a hand in this mystery and the way it unfolded.

Thanks once again.

Cheers,

Drew.

I can only speak for myself, but as a player who "kept an eye" on the mysteries, participated mildly as an independent, and experienced the hyperdictions, the anticipation of this event was exciting.

And regardless of the outcome, it certainly was. I took part, ignored whatever dictates where issued, and enjoyed myself. I don't believe the end was planned or scripted, whatever those other threads might say.

The response from regulars in this forum (not usually me to be honest - I lurk, and post now and then), has been generally honourable, and I find that something of an inspiration actually. I've been out exploring a little bit in the past, nothing serious, only what I needed for Palin, and one or two other little hops. Now, I've kitted out a proper explorer, and I'm on my way out, and I'm excited about that as well.

So, thanks to you, Drew, and to you Rifters [up]

IMHO, I don't see why the Formidine Rift would be like the Bermuda Triangle. It is just a normal bit of space, the mystery was the content and we got that the content was an exodus plan. I don't see why we should be seeing UFO's and strange sightings in their. I guess the name "Formidine" created a sense of fear in that place and we started expecting unknown stuff. I understand that it is anti-climatic but well, that's how the story goes.

I'm glad you chose open. At least everyone had a chance to get involved, independently or as a group and hundreds of commanders got to participate as a result. I know I'd be a little miffed if the final chapter of 'the story of Elite Dangerous' was determined by a small subset of the community in a private group.
