THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

In terms of player action driving the story forward, I still feel that actively searching for 'them' - even if there's nothing there to be found, yet - will produce better results than just waiting for an Alien Armada patch. I think that being pro-active rather than reactive is the way to participate in the story most effectively.

This ^, this ^ and all this ^.

Let's get out there and look for stuff until FDev takes pity on us and puts some content in!

I have to say that brought a smile to my face. There are a lot of ways to interpret 'Cheers', and for a brief instance I had a view of Drew in a pub raising a pint and smiling with backslaps all around. Salome is dead, Cheers.

The smile wasn't because I like or approve of that interpretation, it just struck me as funny. Particularly if you take that post, put it into a time machine and plop it into the Rift thread a year plus ago. Man we would have gone nuts.

If we do that ... then we need a plan.

Ok I stopped when they said CoR found the first generation ship. They didn't. They found a crippled mega ship. With such a basic mistake so early I couldn't bring myself to read the rest.

I noted that as well. The article has a few mistakes in it, but it attempst to be balanced and creates a good story - if I didn't know about hte game and read that article, I would think about buying it (and Drew's book). I do realize it contains some mistakes.

On a separate topic - do we know how long those listening posts had been in Teorge? One of Drew's comments almost implied that they have been there for a very long time, but is that possible? I'm not sure how much that system is frequented? If they were only put there in recent days, were they somewhere else before that?

First we need to figure out what questions we need to be asking, then we can decide how to go about answering them :)

I took Drew's comments (I think I know the one you're talking about) to mean they'd been put there recently, whereas ideally they'd have just appeared at the point that Salome (etc) reached Tionisla and got the update from TOW's Cobra.

A glance at EDMS tells me that over 200 CMDRs (who use EDMS) had been through Teorge prior to the last 7 days. It's not a popular system, but hardly a backwater either, so we can be pretty certain that the listening posts haven't been there since Gamma - they're not exactly hidden.
If they'd been somewhere else previously, why move them?

I was thinking they were added during the server restart for the "wobble" they had earlier on Saturday.

It's actually really good press for Frontier. It generates interest. Makes people think, "maybe there's more to this game than I thought."

I completely agree.

Currently I think about searching the bubble for listening posts. Maybe we missed some. Maybe FD forgot to put some in and we make them aware of it.
The numbers broadcast satellites might be something of interest for us now that we know (working hypothesis) that the real mystery is in the bubble.

A rather low traffic and completely uninteresting system for standard players. I've been in that system a few times. I decided that the listening posts have been added only a few hours before the event - otherwise…
I think Drew Wagar mentioned that they got added very recently for the event, but maybe I'm just trying to feel better about not noticing them before.

My question, who has a ship with a big enough jump range and the patience to map the route to the centre of the Col 70 permit locked bubble? 40s my best so I don't think it's me.
The only reason i can see for open planets in this bubble is if it can form a route, probably with scoopable stars and planets with FSD boost mats.

I've been bouncing around the Bubble for the last 4 months, checking local Galnets - covered over 1,600 systems.
There seems to be a 1:250 ratio of interesting to dull systems. I've not identified a particular pattern to where they're distributed, so it does seem to be a brute-force activity :(

I've had an eye out for Listening Posts, but not to the extent of flying within 1kLY of every body in a system, so I may have missed them.

Question to ask:

Why was Salome near 46 Eridani? What was she looking for in that area?

If you build it content may come!

DBX 59ly max jump

I'm out here looking with 55ly max jump range and still not seeing anything deep in col 70 that I can get to.

So, what now?

Greetings CMDRs.
I'm about to (try to) be serious, so pay attention because it doesn't happen very often...

The first part of the Formidine Rift saga has come to an end, but there are clearly a whole lot of questions that remain unanswered. In addition, if I'm reading Drew's hints correctly (first time for everything, right?) then we, the Rifters, have the potential to create content by the act of investigation - if you look for it, they will build it, so to speak.
Right now, we're all kind of flapping around, speculating about anything and everything with no real direction and quite honestly, after following the Rift mystery for 18 months, this lack of direction really sucks.

So, I have a proposal for you all:

Let's quit the theorycrafting, tinfoiling and speculation for the moment and sit down and figure out what we actually know, and the questions we want answered. Once we have some kind of consensus ('herding cats' springs to mind) we can use that to create a new 'first page' of this thread. I say 'this thread' because I'd suggest we stick with it until the mods come along and unsticky it ;)
Additionally, lets keep the Thargoids and Guardian ruins out of this thread - leave all that stuff in the Canonn thread so we're not duplicating things.

Right then.

Stuff we know:
All the stuff from the Teorge logs and Zurara - which I'm not going to copy at this point.
Something in the Rift appeared to drive the Dynasty mission guys crazy
Salome is dead - confirmed by Drew 'Machiavelli' Wagar, so we can assume she's still alive ;)
Somebody rescued Salome from the prison convoy

Stuff we don't know:
Formidine Rift
What the Rift 'threat' is?
Is the "Rift threat" the same as the threat the Dynasty conspiracy tried to counter with the Dynasty expedition?
Is the Teorge information correct?
Who is behind the Dynasty expedition?

Salome Bio
Who is behind Salome's rescue?
Why was Salome special (1)? - Octavia and the body swap
Why was Salome special (2)? - What made her running around in the Rift a threat, where we Rifters can do it with impunity

Sirius/Wreaken/MetaDrive
What happened to Commander Falchion, and what link (if any) do they have to Metadrive? - I have no idea who this is :D
Where did all those Sirius Corp automated exploration probes go?
Why was Salome near 46 Eridani? What was she looking for in that area?

Materials
What happened to the meta alloys and tantalum?

Other stuff
We could, if we wanted, run around the Rift (and Hawking/Conflux) looking for ELWs and beacons, but I think that whilst finding them might be fun (assuming there's anything there) they're 'old news' and not going to tell us anything we don't already know.

If anyone has any other facts or questions the feel free to add them - but at this point I'm going to ignore any theories or speculation ;)

Updated and bumped...

… I've not identified a particular pattern to where they're distributed, so it does seem to be a brute-force activity :(

I have to admit that I mostly ignored things in the bubble, you know because the mystery was supposed to be out there in the void.
The Teorge listening posts have been a shock for me, not because what they revealed, but that I should have found them long ago (assuming they have been there for a long time).

It might be a bit less brute force if we check out the lore relevant systems first, maybe including Drew Wagar's fanfic systems.

If we do that ... then we need a plan.

Step 1: Decide something is out there
Step 2: Look for something
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit

Let's get going.

In all seriousness I think the one important fact we learned from Salome (and CoR and ourselves) is that the players can in fact influence the game and through more ways than just PP, BGS and CGs.

We may not be able to write our own script where DrewC is crowned Emperor High MuckityMuck of Galaxy 3 but we can write our own story through Galnet posts with hints and questions, possibly raise awareness around a parituclarly interesting clue or set of clues and then maybe trigger a CG to address it (my Jacques CG comment further up was only half in jest). See where that takes us and try something else if we don't like it.

I will caution folks, if the plan is a few posts in this thread, sitting back a week and then wait for the CG to pop up you're going to be disappointed. It's going to take weeks, months maybe years of effort because ultimately we have to get FDEV's attention and find the intersection of their interest and ours. It's the place where our fun and their reality meet.

Drew did keep throwing the word 'Core' around ;)

I'm pretty sure the Teorge listening posts are new - there are too many of them for them to be missed by accident and I can't believe that nobody from the Rifters or Canonn (or just somebody who pays vague attention to the forums) passed through Teorge for any significant amount of time.

I wasted all my 'directed searching' time on Greek mythological systems ;)
