THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

Probably constructed from MA & therefore capable of operating at higher physical extremes so more efficien giving longer range, rather than using MA for fuel.

So, following up on that and since large quantities of Tantalum (used to build ships IIRC) and Meta Alloys (allegedly used to build a Meta-FSD) went missing... Do you think that there is a unique ship with MFSD somewhere out there waiting to be discovered?

Because one may not want them to know they are clones.

Also, if you can hexedit, chances are, you can also condition a brain to be triggered to do something (much like River in Serenity).

Z...

Ah Serenity, and Firefly. I was just thinking this morning that we should rename griefers as GRievers, because it seems they have the same uncontrollable urge for mindless destruction.

Hmm, I might have confused this in which case, forget what I've said...

Just had my cup of hot coffee but it tasted a bit strange... forget what?

Additionally, you do know what happens when somebody from Sheffield moves to Miami don't you?

The average IQ in both cities goes up :D

Ok, round these parts it's normally said about Leeds rather than Miami, but I think it still works... :D

Lol, can't rep you again, unfortunately. Mothers side of family were from Leeds...

I'll be working from home tomorrow so if it's really really really quiet, I might possibly contemplate putting my Pc on as background, but only for the forums. Honest.

It would be disrespectful not to! [up]

Have you (or anyone else?) tried using a fighter for planetary surface searching while the ship follows at altitude? Seems like it should be better than using a ship for eyeball search.

Nowadays, I just park the camera right under the nose of my ship, giving me a completely unobstructed view, and fly the ship from there. That makes it very easy to see stuff.

I only have to switch back to the cockpit now and then to check coordinates or whatever. Works pretty well.

Shouldn't the logo show a guy in a straight jacked wearing a tin foil head?

Can't rep you again either! [up]

That seems to be the way the storyline is going. Whether it's a ship we can obtain is a different matter; perhaps in Col70?

How about "Potterers"? :x

No, that's me in the garden, when I can't avoid it in favour of exploring the galaxy.

How about "Potterers"? :x

Or Finkbottoms.

From a different thread.

I just wish the guy hadn't chosen 'Harry Potter' as his commander name, of all things. It makes it impossible to take him (or any of this) seriously. I can only picture Salome being killed by a bespectacled wizard boy on a broomstick yelling "expelliarmus!" How immersive.

Only because you don't know the full story.

That pilot's real name is "Bartholomew Quincy Finkbottom III" but while he was at pilot training he decided to change his name due to the rather predictable attention it brought. He saw an ancient documentary on a boy who ruthlessly killed a man who was trying to unite an oppressed people some 1300 odd years ago and decided that was a name that would bring fear to his enemies and legally changed it.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Anyone know of a system (alliance space) that has a 5a FSD?

I'm trying to kit out an AspX but alliance space seems to be a parts wasteland.

I seem to remember that in one of the original games the objective was to get a suped-up ship capable of taking down aliens....?
I never owned the game, but I remember seeing something like that in one of Brabens interviews.

Original elite had you getting an ecm system jammer, so you fire off a missile at a thargoid-occupied space station without them ecm jamming the missile . Jam the jammer. Also, a cloaking device, though I don't recall needing it for the space station.

I poked around the COL 70 sector and could find a single system which is not permit locked, no matter how far inside. Where did this information come from that only the border of the sector is permit locked?

I misunderstood this when I first read it too. Thatchinho explains the misunderstanding well, I quoted him below if you haven't seen it. There are some systems within the locked col 70 but near to unlocked areas as well that are accessible. I managed to get into a Hip system among the col 70 the other day but there was nothing there. I'm starting to think that she was either bridging the gap at 46 Eridani from witch head because the permit lock is thin there or the content that brought her here is in the col 70 area but not ready yet (so still locked).

I'd have to scroll back through this thread to find, but a number of people have commented on seeing unlocked systems within the permit locked bubble. May just be a mistake or impossible to get in, but who knows.

Oh, think they have usually said they are HIP systems too if my memory is working right today.

Col 70 is large and weave's around other sectors. It also contains stars discovered in other star surveys so they have different names. Here and there are some that are near the edge and still accessible but most are permit locked as well. 47 Eridani is completely surrounded by col 70 sectors, for instance (it's permit locked too though).

For my part, I'll just restate what I've said. Col 70 is effectively a huge bubble/sphere (approx 1,000 ly in diameter) however, there are large bubbles within it which are not permit locked. These are not Col 70 sector systems. These include Witchead, Trapezium, Spirograph, Orion Dark, an NGC group and various others. Horsehead Dark is in there but is locked.

When one of the unlocked bubbles is near the edge of the Col 70 bubble, the result is effectively a wall of locked Col 70 systems.

The wall is thin and easily jumpable or even fully breached in places allowing you into the various unlocked bubbles.

What I was not able to find was any unlocked systems completely within a Col 70 piece of space, i.e. where it is surrounded on all sides by permit locked Col 70 systems. I did find plenty of HIPs, etc. completely within Col 70 pieces of space, but all were locked.

Denali may have found some unlocked HIPs completely within Col 70 pieces of space however. Over to Denali for more info on that front.

I thought I'd really found gold with that one but it was just two type M stars with some rocky and metal rich worlds. There was nothing there. I'm not sure if it was missed in the locking or if it was considered a part of the witch head string. My new plan isn't to look in col 70 but to survey all the systems in 50ly's of 46 Eridani.

I spotted this on the Canonn thread but got distracted. Is it the same guy who left a data package out at Colonia, there was an LP detection of him a while ago. Or is this a separate weft?
It's the guy from the Cannon thread. I just thought it was relevant to the rift mystery so I wanted to post it here.

Does anyone on this thread have any graphical expertise to draw up some ideas for an updated Rifter decal? Unfortunately my graphical skills are worse than useless (must have a third attempt with holome). I think it should show the Zurara as the symbol of the search endpoint, but I like the idea of also keeping the original squarerigger as a symbol of the long journey we had, going out into the unknown and searching new worlds. It could even have the motto "Remember Zurara" or "Rifters for truth!" Or... any other ideas? I think with Canonn getting one the implication is that FD have simplified the mechanism so it might be relatively easy to get if we have a good design.

I have some experience with graphic design. I'm open for ideas if there are any request. If everyone could agree on something they'd like to see, I'll do my best to make it.

Re decal -I think it's better to throw some ideas together then get comments from us here
