Prey - out 05 may.

It's drawing inspiration from a few big FPS releases but then many games do this. The important part is that this game is implementing those inspirations excellently.

I've played about 5 hours so far not much because of real life stuff. But I can say it's one of the best games I've played in recent years probably longer.

If you don't mind my asking, what's your staple diet, with regards to games? (What sort of games are you into)

I've been gaming since the mid 90s and I've probably played every major release since then across all genres (aside from RTS games those are not my thing). So FPS, RPG, APRG, Space, MMO and indy.

It's 'Dishonored's gameplay, meets Bioshock's aesthetic, meets System Shock', but not quite as good as any of those IMHO. It could just be 'familiarity breeding contempt' for me, plus the graphic style that works for Dishonored, seems less effective here? That said, the mimics are creeping me out... "why are there two bins in that corn... arrrgh! I'll go pick up that med pa... arrgh! Oooh a pist... arrrgh!" etc. etc. Stressful! :D

I'm playing through this now, and avoiding reading anything on the Internet about it, because I want to do the first run through without spoilers. It's a good game, harder than I expected, but interesting. Maybe it's not a classic, but it is very good.

I know other pro reviews say it a lot about this game but the sense of exploration is great in this. There's a hacking level 4 door near the starting area called "fabrication" I'd mostly forgotten about it as I progressed elsewhere. I read an email in one of those elsewhere places alluding to a ceiling access storage area which peaked the interest. Sure enough I found it after gaining access to the volunteer quarters. Love that so much about this game often the solution is tucked away in plain enough sight but then you'll get a hint somewhere else and it janks the thought processes.

They have really struck the right balance between combat and exploration.

Finished it on Hard last night. Really good game, well recommended. If you enjoyed System Shock 2 you will love this. If you loved the original Deus Ex, not Invisible War, you will love this.

And you're spot on with the exploration. It really does pay to poke around in every nook and cranny. You never know what you might find.

I'm playing on normal myself but I will do a top level run through later. What sort of build did you go for out of curiosity? Personally I'm putting all my points into anything hacky/repairy and I'll go mimic with typhon...basically anything that helps me get into, onto, out of places I wouldn't normally be able to.

After several big disappointments this and last year - wow, this game is finally something good! I`m only 2h in but I`m getting Doom3/Portal/HalfLife vibes all the time. Its great so far!

I maxed out Security and Engineer and all but two of Science. Didn't touch Typhon at all. My go to weapon of choice was the maxed out shotgun coupled with that ability that slows down time. I was worried whether that was going to be recorded at the end but it wasn't. I guess the only ones that count are the bottom ones.
Did anyone get the references to Orch-OR theory and Roger Penrose? Am i the only one? Oh, it was hilarious when i realized that the in-game lore is not complete buzzword mumbo jumbo but actually based on obscure real world theory.

I've never heard of that. I work at a brain research institute, in IT I might add, and will have to pass this around to some of the bright sparks and see what they think of it.

Thanks!

Just to be clear, from a biophysical perspective it is borderline nuts. So don't be surprised that experts call it out as such.
But it's cool to see real science reference in sci-fi games, for that Orch-OR is very appropriate.

This theory from Penrose, and he humself with it, has been thoroughly debunked. Its more pseudo-science mixed with religion, IMHO.

Yep. Good shout. It's a great game lots of cool mechanics and tight tense gameplay which encourages the player to come up with innovative way of dealing with things.

One of the best games I've played in 5 years. At shy of 20 quid it's well worth it.
