Elite / Frontier Lightspeed in FE2

I'm sure plenty of people have already discovered this, but did you know you can't reach lightspeed in FE2? I assume you also can't in FFE?

Out of interest I tried it the other week, and I think I got to something like around 250,000 kms. (Lightspeed is roughly 297,000 kms isn't it?)

Interestingly, my speed stopped at 250,000 kms, but if I kept thrusting forwards it was like I was still accelerating. If I carried on thrusting fowards for a few seconds, then hit the reverse-thrusters, it would be a few seconds before my speed started to drop. The longer I carried on thrusting forwards after reaching top speed, the longer it took my speed to reduce when using the reverse-thrusters. So maybe I WAS still accelerating, but my speedo simply couldn't handle it? ;)

Exactly. Even if you could reach light speed, it would still take over 4 years to get from Sol to Alpha Centauri. Boring!

True, but with Stardreamer you could do it in much less time. Wouldn't really be practical or sensible, but would be pretty cool if the option was there I think.

I was just impressed that the Frontier developers thought of everything when they wrote the game. ;)

This may have been discussed before but... Could you fly from one system to another this way ie. Sol to Barnards star?

Thats a shame, would have been interesting to try.

The nearest system to Sol is 4-light years, so at top speed, StarDreamer on max, it'd take, what, half an hour of real-time to travel that sort of distance? I'm sure some systems would be closer to one another, and it would just be another level of realism were it possible I think.

It would be a nice touch for E4, So, if you were in a unihabited system and your Military or Hyper drive was trashed by naught pirates, there could be a way out. I assume you could plot a course, accelerate to max speed of 250 kps shut your engines off, kick inthe stardreamer and get comfortable reading RIG!

It might be a feature to consider, as you say, it would offer a way out when you're left without hyperspace capability. That way, you wouldn't have to resort to reloading from an earlier point.

Especially as the standard escape capsule only has a interplanatary drive fitted.

Fat lot of good that is, when you heading our into the wilds of deep space!
