General / Off-Topic Be wise to the forum games...

Has to be said;
one), so you don't fall for it
two) , so you know when its happening to your thread and you can knock it on the head before its gets messy.

In no way do i expect everyone to be able to discuses an argument at the same level (i'm no expert) but some people play dumb, and know exactly what they are doing... sadly, this is allowed to often, as people think its innocent chatter, and just trying to participate in a 'forum'.

But its all to clear, there are now 'tools' to play the forum. People playing it as a game. Not talking about salt mining poster, the main problem is derailment and getting post locked, burring and diluting... epically when one side can/has lost an argument.

Lets list a few tactic in use;

*The friend banter*. This is where one person post something (normally in opposition the OP, nothing wrong with that) then a second person come along, agrees (also fine) but start saying things along the lines of 'oh, hi, not seen you in a while' followed by 'hi, nah, been a while, what you upto'. followed by.. well you get the idea. This could be done in private IMs, or even a catch up thread in off topic. They aren't even having a catch up, Its just derailment.

*The bait*. when something off topic is brought up as an opposition point. This is to get you to argument about that topic instead. if that fails, baiting moves on to antagonisation(winding people up), hoping to spark a thread fight and derail or even get the thread locked (we see this way too much, and the thread get lock, while the people that planted the seeds get off scott-free)

*The bury*. This seem so innocent, posting of many videos. image without spoiler tags.. just a nooby mistake right, lack of etiquette? Nope (at lest for poster that should know better). It's about taking up visible space on the thread. To make it look like a large area of the topic has gone do another road. This is used as it brakes no rules, and looks like a innocent act.

don't play their games... Just report it, if you believe its going on, and let the mods look at what happening. Even link back to this thread if you want them to know what you think is happening

I'm sure i've only listed some of the 'tools' in use to play the forums, feel free to add more (gets ready for links of me doing it:p I try not too, and not in the underhanded way i have just listed.)

...and yes, technically, this is not 'Elite' stuff, and should be in off-topic, but it is being played out the elite forums, and I would like to see it stop... we are not playing your games anymore!

Don't wanna see a 'police state' forum, but also don't want the forums to be spoiled by a few people.

Added: I haven't set these points out as rules(for one, i cant do that :p), how you run a thread you open is up to you. I'm just showing what is going on in some cases, so that people that wish to stop such actions, before they get out of hand, can do so.

Here's another version of the bury. There are at least 5 posters I can think of who create a minimum of 4 inane threads per day. So there's a page of threads just for them.

I'd like the forum filter to not display threads from people on my ignore list.

So much this :)

I do agree with the OP though, that stuff happens as well, there's too many people doing Forum PvP. At the risk of sounding like a grandpa (Get off my lawn!), the forums were better in the olden days where most people genuinely wanted to use collaboration to get the best ideas forwards for the game.... Also stop the darn kids drifting in the mailslot! :D

Sooden,

You shouldn't also just assume that people are being trolls as you did last night. Instead of even entertaining an intelligent debate that was opposite of your opinion you reported for mis-use. If you look at my forum history it's pretty clean. The report against me was only the 2nd against me in the entire time on the forums, and it was only a warning. Nothing more. Before you go on a witch hunt, take into consideration the posters previous history and previous interactions with that poster. I do not believe, other than last night, we have had any previous interactions, so why would you assume me of wrong doing without even engaging in a conversation? Now, you are right about one thing, I could have messaged the other poster with a pm but I didn't think about that. I was not trying to be a forum troll. Believe it or not, I am not pro-Code, SDC or any other group that might be categorized as Trolls or Greifers. I am in fact the exact opposite and actively oppose those actions. So anyways, not to get too far off topic. You are right. The issues you listed above happen, probably a lot, but one should not also jump to conclusions and push the nuke button because you assume something you don't know.

o7 to future debates... both pro and con.

Fly safe CMDR!

Just one point re OP's whatever it is, manifesto perhaps? In coming up on 20 years of internet use, this forum is the only one I have ever posted on where there's an expectation (from a sub-set of users only) that images should be included in spoiler tags. The first time someone mentioned it in a thread I was posting in, I actually assumed they were making some kind of obscure joke. I would imagine that it's neither a mistake nor a lack of etiquette in most cases, but simply people who usually post on somewhat less uptight organs.

Most of this can be addressed through sound and consistent moderation of the forum by the moderators - sadly something that is lacking.

If you find a post that has violated forum rules, please report it for consideration.

If you feel moderation has been wrong, and we do make mistakes, please contact BrettC via PM on these forums.

The spoiler tag is meant for spoilers. Not for images. It seems to me that the OP is playing his own forum games. An attempt to change the rules to his liking.

Don't fall for it.

I do it when the only image I could grab was one that happens to be huge. Doesn't happen often though as I can usually find smaller or shrink it. I didn't realize there was ever any expectation for hiding all images though. Seems odd.

By the way, how have you been? Haven't seen you in a while.

I play a video game where i pretend to be a space ship captain.
I visit this forum because i enjoy the game it is related to and want to take part in that community.

Those who come here to derail, troll and harass a video game community must have noooo life, what so ever.

I mean, Terrorist on a message board... HARDCORE!

--

i heard that we had a board 'attack' (for lack of a better word) two days ago?.. a whole load of nonsense troll threads. Its actually laughable.

I remember seeing in India when i was last their visiting, a starving child half exhausted.. covered in filth begging for scraps all his energy spent trying to stay alive and yet here we have people who waste their time on a crusade against a video game.

Well, for 10pm on Sundays it's a bit too complicated those rules. I'm just keeping to common sense.

I'm not going to reply to each any every post like i normally do.

The purpose of this thread was to make people aware, and not to get involved in pointless arguments, that lead nowhere (hmm...).

Saying it's 'the forum', or 'the internet', is not an argument.

If someone (like me) has open a thread, and doesn't wish it to be played with... then that is fair.

A well run thread try to address all comments and keep to the main topic. Sorry if that what i try to do. This means, its extra work to deal with people that are not there for legitimate reasons. (and have never gone to the mod button with out first pointing out my worries to the 'accused' as i would rather clear things up and have a debate)

there is zero point in arguing the points i have raised, they are what they are, and if you are doing them... don't try and pretend your not with me. i know your doing.

Then it's a simple case of reporting it to a mod, for their judgment, i hold not power (would not want to, would feel limited in my topics, and don't have the skills to be a mod :p), all i do is try my best to follow the rules and use the forums as intended.

Not against fun, not against opposite opinion, in-fact i like it, and when i'm proven wrong/convinced other-ways, i say so (rather than argue a point to death -i used to do that lol)

----
a note on images/video as spoiler tags.. true, don't always have to put them in spoiler tags to be 'nice', but when they are used to take up space, one lot after another... Its obvious what is going on. Each thread has its own construct, some may be image and videos, some may not, its about knowing when its being abused... though it was important to point that out as i didn't mean to say it was always a case of abuse.

There is another reason of spoiler tags and image, people browsing the forums on a phone appreciate it (don't have a phone myself, but ya know... its nice to be nice).

------
as for

A post that has been deleted can not be debated... it would be pointless, i sure you know that. trying to look innocent on a post that can no longer be referred too...

I never brought that days happening up as an example, or wanted to publicly defended my reporting to the mods. i wasn't ashamed if it. it's was dealt with and i had no interest in gloating, so i left it at that.

This thread was in response to my frustration of how rampant these actions where becoming.

i'm sure you will say some really interesting stuff in a reply... How, 'this and that', you where 'only'... not interested, i know what you did, what your doing now... and it would just be a fight between me and you, one i'm not interested in.

Also i did point out what my concern was in that thread, and you started playing more games, i was reasonable but saw you where not, so i left it for the mods to look at.
