Stolen Cargo

So I was tooling around and trying to run some cargo from station to station and when I landed at one station there was a random cargo canister floating around inside the station. After lifting off, I deployed my cargo scoop and went and picked it up.

Now, it's listed as 'stolen' in my cargo. There were no other ships at the station at the time. I can't seem to sell it anywhere. Anything I can do with this other than just jettison it?

Thanks!

You have to sell it at blackmarket. Not all stations have it. That's the only way to sell the stolen goods.

You can sell stolen goods at the black market, under contacts. Not every station has one. Try Azeban City in Eranin.

Think that should be something that's changed in the next release. If a canister is bobbing about (not just inside space stations, but there are occasionally some on your radar marked "unidentified signal" or some such) then it's salvage, and shouldn't be classed as stolen.

That will have been someone finding out just how hard a space station is and how fragile their sidewinder is. Hint : Sidewinder always loses.

I don't think you can even sell stolen goods at the black market. Or at least, sometimes it is bugged. I picked up some abandoned cargo in the same way as the OP. I tried selling it on various black markets including in the anarchic system and it wasn't listed as something I could sell in any of them. I raised a ticket.

Also, be careful when carrying stolen goods. I was interdicted by the police and when they scanned me they found it. They opened fire and I ended up with a bounty on me. I ran as soon as they started attacking. So at least that part of the game is working...

I've had a couple instances where stolen goods I have in my hold are failing to show up in the black market trading screen. So far, closing the market and reopening it has fixed it for me.

Quoted from another thread ...
Scooping Cannisters: If you didn't buy it, it isn't yours, hence, stolen. Salvaging isn't really in the game yet. I might have this wrong, but I think you'll be able to buy a licence to salvage, and then cannisters won't be marked "Stolen"

I would argue that no-one should be able to claim ownership of free floating cargo & that it only belongs to you when it's in your ship's hold.
The way I see it, if you jettison cargo then you do it of your own free will. If it's in response to a pirate's demand, you had the option to refuse & then to fight. If you choose to drop cargo you then have the opportunity to attack the pirate as he scoops & is vulnerable, or you can do it to buy time & escape. Either way, you use cargo to buy yourself a chance, so I see it as part of the cost.

If a ship is destroyed or damaged & it's cargo is left floating free then how can anyone claim ownership ? Again, it's part of the cost. I agree there is a 'legal' basis for ownership, but it's not an elegant game mechanism because it unneccessarily criminalises players who scoop cargo that has no apparent owner, & it also leaves open the exploit of using a cargo cannister as 'bait' - Drop a cannister, go cold, wait for someone to scoop it, then scan & attack them for having 'stolen' cargo.

IMHO, the original games got it right - Cargo in space belongs to whoever is strong enough to take it.

Cargo from criminals

I am sure this has been discussed elsewhere, but I am at a loss as to why when you collect cargo from someone who is WANTED that the cargo shows as being stolen. It would be far better to show the cargo as "salvaged".

Maybe at that point you could turn it in at the nearest station for a finders fee, which by rights would be less than if you sold it on the black market. I suppose a good mechanic for this is that if you sell salvaged goods to your "friends" then there is a chance it gets traced back to you, and you get some negative rep with the police or something.

Not a fully formed thought but just frustrated in that that if I spend the time to wipe out a few waves of criminals and then some cop comes by and scans me and instantly attacks - it doesn't seem fair.

So there I was the other day walking down the road just after a bunch of pedestrians had been mown down by a reckless driver and what do I find?
Wallets, purses, cash, mobile phones. Must be my lucky day! ;)

What? You mean it's a crime picking those things up? I thought finders keepers came in with magna carta .....

You could of course dump the illegal cargo before getting scanned. I did this yesterday when I was interdicted by security when I had a 'salvaged' canister of liquor in the cargo bay. The scan was clean and the security Anaconda didn't notice the jettisoned can. If only I hadn't messed up the recovery:(

Haha exactly what I was thinking. +1 to you good sir.

I tried this earlier. Picked up some stolen copper. Ran into 4 federal fighters just outside the station, one of which decided to scan me... Anyway, I may not be in Dahan for a while if anyone's looking for me there...

common law has a definition that If you leave something and some one picks it that's salvaged

if you lose something and some one picks it up then that's theft (if they keep it)

if you eject cargo it should be salvage

if you have cargo ejected when blown up - as you still live its stolen (no matter who collects it unless its you)
