Elite VR in 2017

Okay,

I bought the Elite few year ago super cheaply in some steam christmas sale, and it didnt gotten under my skin. Recently, I started playing with idea of trying VR, particulary puttin my smartphone in the cardboard goggles, and thought elite may be excellent candidate for that. I bought Horizons, not-cardboard-cardboard goggles and got into setting up my game. It proved difficult. In-game Side-by-side mode produces only distorted image.

Like this:

So, I spent last week googling the heck out of it, and found out most of the threads, YT tutorials and solutions are from years 2014-15 and not viable today. What fragments I could gather, didnt work out for me.

Option 1: Setting ultra-wide resolution to the game via Nvidia panel, overstretch the game to compensate basically: Didnt tried that out personaly yet, becuase I hear from everywhere its not working anymore, leaving that to the last ditch effort.

Option 2:
SweetFX shaders, that make the game run in good proportions

Issue I: As I said, everything I could find was old, and as such, links to files dead.

Issue II: I found one custom shader files, in one youtube tutorial still working.

While the ratio is corrected, lense effect and barrel distortion in that configuration make everything look like surface of the globe (even the flat holoscreens), so its replacing one problem with other really.

So. Is no one playing Elite in VR these days? And if some of you do, can you share your magic how to do it?

Much appreciated

Elite via cardboard is about as recommended as attaching a Hoover to your genitals and setting it to max.

So are you for it or against?

Rather try to find a cheap DK2 on eBay or something.

OP - really Tor's advice is good but it'd be handy to know your spec to see if it's worth even trying. Did see this the other day, no idea if it's any good.

Yes sirreee, gotta use lower settings :)

I tried TrinusVR while waiting for my Vive.
At best I got 30fps, and the latency was so bad I nearly yacked just launching out of the mailslot, image was utterly squashed.
And I'm the one who does 350KM+ SRV treks in vr for fun.

Lots still play in VR - I doubt many use cardboard though. You'll need at least an Oculus DK2 to enjoy Elite Dangerous in VR, a consumer grade Rift or Vive are recommended for the best experiences.

I´ll definitely consider buying full on VR headset, but before investing into the such device, I want to try it the cheap way.

And regardless of VR aparatus, how do you deal with image distortion in SDS mode?

Okay,

Are you kidding me? Have you been living under a rock? Just look on how active this thread/forum is and even youtube videos.

Though I must say don't bother with gearVR or cardboard VR for ED. If you want to know what it is to play ED in VR you must try with either VIve or rift or DK2 at least.
90% of the people who do try it NEVER go back to normal 2D flat screen anymore!!!!

Once you've installed the drivers for a VR headset, a magic new VR option appears in the 3D options. You just select that and you're good to go.

If you are using some sort of homemade VR then I'm sorry I can't be more of help.

I can definitely see you want to test this.
Especially since peoples responses range from "this is awesome! I'm never taking it off!" to well no words but projectile vomit and some even feel nausea for hours after.
with many steps in between.
Personally I'm in the first group, but you can't really know until you try.
And even me had a period for easing in.

I wanted the same before pre orders for the big two launched and bought an s6 with the gear vr. and yeah that's ok VR, but quite cumbersome.

You can't use a phone protective cover without removing it before using vr.
And then it's an awkward process and, granted I can be a clutz, by i never once didn't drop the phone at least once getting it into the gear.

And heavens forbid someone actually call or text you while using it.
Cause you can't answer until you have taken the whole off and fumbled it apart.
Not to mention it drains battery like you wouldn't believe.

Try cardboard with the actual cardboard apps, a lot of those are great.
But the cheapest way for trying ED in vr is a used dk2 it is directly connected via the same software and runtimes as the cv1 and full 3d head tracking.
The spatial head tracking is truly where the R come into VR.

And if you like it well enough to invest in a production set, you can sell it and get your money back.
Or if you don't like it, the same.

A VR headset comes down to personal choice. I use the HDK2 and I'm very happy with it. Others use Oculus or HTC Vive.

What I would say though is a FULL VR headset is definitely worth it if you play ED a fair bit. ED in VR is AWESOME. It puts you in space, not just looking at space on the screen. I haven't gone back to the monitor since even though the graphics are better. So my recommendation, try a friend's full VR headset. If you like it, save the pennies. May even find second hand one in good condition.

Hi,

I'm the guy who created the first guide you linked too on YouTube :) I'm going to do a follow up video showing how my set-up has evolved.

Basically it involves the following:

The same basic technology of Trinus VR / Moonlight / Nvidia GameStream

But now using EDTracker Pro: http://www.edtracker.co.uk/shop/my-basket/edtracker-pro

Samsung Galaxy S7 and

Homido VR headset: https://www.amazon.co.uk/product-re...pe=all_reviews&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=recent

Better headsets may be available but this has IPD adjustment (distance between eyes), Eye to lens adjustment and offers 2 sets of lens holders, shallow and deep (further increasing the available range between eye and lens in use) which makes it suitable for someone shortsighted like me (-3.0 for reference for all short sighted people out there)

I use
TP-Link AC1900 router https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Networki...105053&sr=1-2&keywords=TP-Link+Archer+C9&th=1
High Gain wireless adaptor (PC to Router): https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL-WN822N-Wireless-Adapter-Version/dp/B00416Q5KI

I use the Routers 5Ghz band which is positioned around 4m behind me, though one internal partition wall (so relatively good signal). In terms of video streaming my set-up is completely wireless.

You can set it all up before mounting the phone in the headset and you're good to go. Set alignment, get it comfy on your head, reset the head tracking and off you go.

When set-up I have 2 wires (1 of which is optional) coming from the headset - power cable to the phone (optional) and USB cable from ED Tracker Pro to front port on PC case (ED Tracker Pro is blue takked to the top of the headset).

It's not the simplest thing to set-up but I get it working within 5 minutes now I know what I'm doing - that's going from a desktop Elite set-up with all necessary apps and programs pre-installed to switching all options to VR and being ready to play. Which is the normal situation once you've done all the initial set-up.

You can actually stream the game in 4K and this should be downsampled to 1440p for the S7, so I'll be testing image quality in this mode compared to 1080p. Although this is strictly for testing IQ, as my GTX970 won't be capable of running the game full time in this resolution. Will start a new thread with a link to the video once it's all done.

If anyone's interested in giving Elite VR a go on the cheap then I believe this a good video (from one of the Lave Radio team) for getting it set up using Trinus.

That said, I'm an Oculus user and it's amazing. REALLY easy to set up and get going (although you can spend some time tweaking to get the most out of it later on).

I've also got a bunch of useful links (mostly for Oculus) in the "Stuff to do with VR" section over here ...
