I respectfully disagree. On one hand the airless worlds kept me flying for at least 6 months and even now I enjoy the occasion of landing on any worlds. Plus I do hope that with 2.4 we’ll get that promised update with regard of material coloring, revealing the true nature of the worlds.
When it comes to planets with atmoshere, a whole lot of new variables come into play like different erosion, atmoshpere types and so on – even basic Mars-like worlds will be very-very, well, atmospheric.
However, I do believe the atmospheric landings will be launched with gas giants, as they don’t need to implement surface features with it but can play the largesse of atmospheric features very well
I didn't say airless worlds weren't enjoyable. And the variables you mention can also be expected from airless worlds, and yet we only have deserts with a height maps, not even genuine canyons (= not steep hills), neither caves, etc. I would love a great variety for atmo landings, but from what we have now, I tend to expect either rocks or grass and a height map ; water/ammonia below a random sea level value, or something like this.
