Hardware & Technical My X52-pro Just died after....

13 years !!!!

I think I got my money's worth , but I did have the more reliable early one(before MadKatz bought the firm).
So, I have a brand new X-55 Rhino(the one that had USB problems if not connected to a powered hub) sat in its box for 2 years, never used.
Worth using Rhino or time to look online?

*single manly tear during the 21 gun salute funeral*

You might as well just use the Rhino while shopping around for something that fits into your HOTAS budget so if/when the Rhino bites it you can already have something picked out to replace it.

I too have an X52 Pro, also from the pre-MadKatz days. But mine is getting loose/wobbly and I just received my Warthog HOTAS. After spending a evening trying to fly a ship with a simple back-and-forth switch for yaw, I just ordered the Thrustmaster rudder pedals. Needed pedals for my flight sims anyway... :D

My X52 Pro will get gently dissambled, worn parts replaced, or maybe even a entire new gimbal assy and put on the shelf as a backup. It has been my goto flight setup for many, many years.

Spent 3 hours setting up the rhino, and still crashed in to the toaster grill and an NPC coming out :D
I didn't even get a fine, let alone get blown up by station(45M insurance!!!) ,so got away with it.
Boy does it take getting used to a new joystick, half the buttons are different, and I have 2 years of ED muscle memory.
Tomorrow I will be taking out a sidey and learn to fly again :D

You too! :)

I hooked up my WartHog, fired up ED, and realized I didn't know the standard key mappings and I am sitting several jumps away from my home base in my Corvette!

I managed to get him home without incident, but for the next week or so I am flying the AspE while I learn this new rig! :D

I'm a bit more fortunate than you though, in that I only have to unlearn about 4 months of muscle memory...

dognosh: Just in case you are looking at a Warthog HOTAS, I spent two evenings trying to get used to having yaw controlled by a switch. Just couldn't get used to it, as I think yaw should be on a analog axis like a twist stick or pedals. So today I ordered a set of the relatively cheap Thrustmaster pedals. If I can adapt, I will probably upgrade to some more substantial pedals later. Just a FYI...

I was thinking that too, as I get older twisting can get difficult :D

What was the cause of death. My X52 is doing well after a lot of use.
Out of nowhere multiple button presses were being registered by a single keypress on the joystick, throttle is fine.
Post mortem not performed yet, but I did open joystick and all cables were still connected.
I will take it to bits at some time and see how far I get, but it is probably a component failure rather than wiring fail.

You know what ? I prefer the X-55 !!! :D
Took me hours to setup, and am slowly getting comfy with it.
(notice bolt in top right of throttle base. There is also one in bottom left, held with butterfly nuts for quick release from desk if needed)

I really wanted to upgrade to the X56 but I have read so many posts here (and reviews online) about the shortcomings in the quality department that I wasn't ready to risk it.

Glad you are liking it. :)

The X56 has 2 analog buttons, instead of the 2 digital on my X55 and I sorely miss not having them !!!
(In piccy, look for "TGL 1" ,switch is on the left of that,on left of that 2 grey nobs)

I was an x52pro owner, until Feb this year. As a surprise birthday present I was bought a Warthog, my pro going to my youngest for his gaming (although he isn't in to Elite...shame but hey ho!) to get used to the new Hotas and learn a whole new set of bindings (and over two years of muscle memory), I set off on a trip...so far 110k Ly so far - Sol to Colonia to Sag A, sightseeing, back to Colonia for a second AFMU and then on to Beagle Point. Now, I'm thoroughly comfy with the Warthog...I don't even 'feel' that "sh*t which key did what!" kick in at all. I was a dyed in the wool pro man, now... I'm all Hog.. oh..but with the TFRP - tri d to do Yaw with a switch but couldn't get it to sink in! So....if you change hotas - take a trip.. worked for me...heading back to Sol now and hopefully Elite Explorer

I'm all comfy with the Hog now. Added VKB pedals to handle the Yaw duties and felt right at home with this setup. Spending a few nights in a Haz Res might have helped. :)

As the electronics of my x52 pro are still functional, I will disassemble it and see if I can repair/replace worn components and put it on the shelf as a backup.
