Empire Rank to King - So What

i-just-can-t-wait-to-be-king.jpg

Said no ED player ever.

Worst. Kings. Ever.

Not even the odd speech.

King of what exaclty....

Ranks are just a veil hiding you from "end game" content in an attempt to slow your progression to give the feeling of

A. Some sort of accomplishment
B. Stretch out what content exist giving the appearance of deeper gameplay

That is all your rank literally means nothing. I

Well, you can declare prima nocte....

And get your parking validated.

But keep in mind these titles, these ranks - they're honorary.

CMDR Soandso is an Admiral in the eyes of the Federal Navy - that is to say, CMDR Soandso is to be given the same respect as any Admiral, but holds no command authority, isn't paid by the Federal Navy, and won't draw a pension. They just respect him.

Likewise, CMDR Soanso holds the honorary title of King in the Empire - meaning he should be given the same level of respect, though he rules over his little Kingdom of 1, and it flies him where ever he wants to go.

But that's really it.

MAYBE, in 4.2 or 5.3, or 9.1 these titles will actually take on some meaning, but for now.. Can I validate your parking, your Royal High Sir?

At the VERY least, traffic control should at least be aware of our titles, and not talk to us like common turds.

I have hopes that the final naval ranks will be required for personal stations/bases later on down the line. Though, I would have preferred they stopped at prince or whatever, as the 'king' title just sounds daft.

Aside from the whole military ranks thing being pointless, other than a ship gating mechanism in-game, I've always wondered why they have mediaeval feudal ranks for the Empire, rather than Roman ones (e.g. Munifex->Evocati->Centurion->Tibune->Legate etc.), which would seem more in keeping with the civilian ranks used?

Calling someone 'King' (or 'Admiral') when they have no responsibilities with rank is also annoying. It's like Bethesda's games where you get to be 'Archmage' or whatever for no real reason.

My clipper is called King Nothing for obvious reasons lol
I'm a metallica fan too so it just fit. Maybe someday top rank will mean something

Oh there's a reason for becoming Archmage - it's usually fairly flimsy, but it's there. At least in Morrowind, if you claimed that title, you did have to put some effort into earning it.

OK. I'll rephrase - becoming Archmage after a few menial tasks. Once you are Archmage though, like King in Elite, you have no responsibilities - no pesky students (or subjects) asking you for things, administrative or functional duties to see to, laws/traditions to uphold, no other 'up-and-coming wizards playing 'dead-men's-shoes' etc. That said, Morrowind was the best of the TES game, I grant you. :)

or.. this will be another crazy condition to get some upcoming fancy ship.. well, not to get it.. just to get rights to buy it :)

Its bizarre really. In most games, when you rank up to the top tier of something, you're rewarded.

In ED, you're asking yourself "what was the point?", other then hoping that one day, you'd be able to buy some insanely powerful ship for 1.5 billion credits. Or a moon.

If you have VA, one (or more) of the HCS voice packs, and EDDI, you'll hear it refer to you as 'your majesty' when you jump into Imp controlled systems.

The frustrating thing for me with all this, is that I like having things to work towards, I like having long term goals.

If a military rankings reward system is ever fleshed I will suddenly be given everything and as such that will be a whole load of content progression/gameplay I've missed out on.

On one hand it's ridiculous that King (and other ranks) are rewarded with squat.

On the other hand, when everyone's at the high ranks there's no point in adding content because everyone's already gone past it, and it then just amounts to giving people stuff for free.

There is no sense of accomplishment or progression for being rewarded for work you did 2.5 years ago. =/

It's as I said before, there should rightly only be 3 ranks:

- Squire (get Courier)
- Knight (Clipper)
- Lord (Cutter)

Anything else is irrelevant, and had there only been three ranks you could keep adding another at the top as content is developed, this way players get to engage with the content.

I guess we are where we are though. =/
