Update 4: In progress
As it says, this thread is about making commanders aware of current and ever changing "Griefer" tactics and trends and how to deal with them based on my own, and others, experience with it.
With so many "WHYYYYY" threads I figured its time to consolidate good advice in one place in an attempt to prepare ourself and others in a positive way to play in OPEN.
Knowledge is 50% of the battle. The rest is skill and luck - IMO.
Wether its a Federal Corvette you Command or a plucky Sidewinder, theres something here for everyone that they can use to try and counter those who, in fairness, are just playing the game the way they find the most fun for them.
I think to start with the basics for the few opening posts is important as I am frankly amazed at some of the most basic things some commanders are not aware of. I myself have been guilty of some of these, which I will go into later in another post.
So with that said, I think ill start with where it all goes wrong for most of you concerned:
THE RADAR
Pay attention to your radar. It sounds so simple. But seriously. Being aware vaugley where your Radar is on your dasboard while poking your nose and flipping through your missions tab is not paying attention to your scanner. Do all that while docked. As a rule of thumb, if you are in SC in a populated zone, you should be watching that radar like a hawk. If you notice A SINGLE hollow icon on that radar and it moves towards you theres 3 things you can to do:
1) Ask yourself:
Am I ready for a fight? If the answer is no lock onto the nearest sytem and hi wake (HI WAKE is the act of locking onto another system and jumping to it. It is the quickest way of escaping most situations) If you do not want to Hi wake, for whatever reason, keep that ship in front of you (dont not let it get behind you) untill youve made sure they are just passing through.Best way to do this is throttle down to ZERO and keep turning while facing him as he moves. This is remarkably effective and you can do this dance for hours with minimal effort. If he keeps trying to get behind you then CONGRATULATIONS youve just ruined his element of suprise and now YOU are in control of the situation.
If its more than one ship and they look like they are both moving towards you, same logic, but be carefull, one can stay in front while the other gets behind. its best to just hi wake out if u notice this happening.
IMPORTANT: be aware that if you decide to high wake, turning your ship to face the destination to jump may expose you by letting the ship get behind you while your FSD charges. In some cases, it MAY be better to drop out of SC, lock onto the sytem and then hi wake. If youre lucky the agressor(s) will arrive too late, assuming they bother to follow you. But better safe than sorry. Remember, you said you were not ready for the fight - so better safe than sorry.
2) Open a line of communication
Again, we forget this is a social game. The mere act of saying hello can completely change our fickle minds about a commander. I have spoken with many, many, many commanders in my travels and many have said they were going to try and interdict me untill we started talking.
Think about it.Worst case scenario, you get no response. Best? Maybe you just made a friend and life just got a tad safer for you in elite.
If they dont respond and keep moving - Go to step one and execute.
IMPORTANT; Be aware of sheep in wolves clothing. Many commanders are sneaky and can lure the more innocent of us with said kind words. Use your judgement, read the situation. If you are not ready for a fight and notice a superior ship approaching and a commander being friendly, always,, always ALWAYS be on your guard. Dont let him get behind you. The only reason a commander wants to get his ships behind yours, is to interdict you. Follow step 1, but keep step 2 in mind as an option.
3)Save and exit.
Before you cry foul and say this is not in the spirit of the game - picture this.
Youve just got back from a 2 week exploratin trip and arrive back in Shinrarta.
Because you are a good student, and read this thread well, you have opted for step 2 (being away from humans has re ignited your compassion and its good to see another commander)
You throttle to Zero..keeping him in front of you at all times
You open a line of commucation:
"Hello, good to see another human, man i have quite the urge for some of those "waters of shinrarta"...IF you know what i mean AMIRITE???"
No response. The FDL moves towards you turning as you turn and appears to want to get behind you.
Again, referring to my teachings, you immediatley go to STEP 1: You ask the question. Am I ready to fight?
HELL NO.
The FDL IS PRETTY CLOSE NOW AND YOURE AFRAID IF YOU TURN TO LOCK ONTO A SYSTEM TO HI WAKE HE CAN GET BEHIND YOU.
But youre also afraid if you drop to normal space and lock on he will fowllow you and blow up your shield less ASP in seconds. Had a you a bigger ship, with better shields, this is a good option, As even if he followed you, you know you can take a few shots before the FSD is charged.
In this case - No way.
BUT you know what you can do? While still in SC with your throttle at Zero, facing this would be commander of robbing you of weeks of data?
Save and Exit. No count down timer needed. Just plop. Your done.
Many will see this as a cheat. I however - really. honestly and firmly, could not care less for those people.
"Yes, FDL person, please. allow me to lower my trousers so i may allow you the pleasure of inserting your plasma into my thrustures!" For no reason, credit or renoun what-so-ever?
Get outta here. Anyway..my mum was calling me and dinner was ready.
Besaide id rather a player did THIS than get wrecked here and be soured by the experience and we lost another commander to this behaviour who shelfs the game (and it does happen).
SO there you go.
While step 3 is my least favourite and I do not encourage it, you can see there are moments where its the lesser of the evil that is combat logging. Which I do not reccomend at all, even in the above scenario.
My next post will go into details about what to try if all the above fails and you find yourself interdicted and ready to be blasted into nothingness.
If anyone else wants to add thier own tips, please, please. PLEASE feel free and remember to keep it basic for now.
What we are trying to do here is lay the foundation with the simple stuff and get more advanced as the thread goes on.
This will be updated daily guys so please always feel like you have a thread to ask for help, post stories and look for solutions also.
Fly safe comanders.
