General / Off-Topic Favourite TV shows ? Top 5 .

o7 CMDRs, i have decided to come to off topic on this fine weekend, but not to my usual political/religious topics, far too depressing at the moment, we all like our escapism, hence Elite Dangerous, but what tv shows do we hold in the highest regard, i'm asking people to give a top five, and by tv shows i don't mean things like eastenders and x factor, or reality tv, i mean the serious stuff. I'll kick this off with my number 1: 24-Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, my all time favourite show. and at number 2: Battlestar Galactica-best sci fi ever. 3: Fear the Walking dead. 4: The Walking dead. and it's a tough call but at number 5: Star Trek Voyager. The first two in my list are unmovable, the second two are interchangeable, the last one is more for nostalgia as it was my first star trek, it could easily be replaced by quality shows such as Stargate SG1 or DS9, or even Man in the high castle or House of cards or Breaking Bad. I look forward to seeing what some of you fine CMDRs put in your list.

1) Thunderbirds - original series
Yes, it's a kids show. No I don't care!
2) E.R.
Tiredness, anxiety, blood soaked greens. Accurate medicine. Hospital Drama still not matched by anything else.
3) Star Trek TOS
More than anything else, I wanted to fly the ship. So now, Elite!
4) Supernatural
The car, the guns, the practicality of squashing evil to a classic rock soundtrack.
5) Stranger Things
Well written and brilliantly acted by a talented children's cast. It beats out Breaking Bad, narrowly.

Honourable mentions to X Company, X Files, MASH, Dr. Who, Space 1999, Blake's 7, Kung Fu, UFO, Search, Stingray, and the MCU shows on Netflix.

In no order

1" Babylon 5"
2 "Blake's 7"
3 "The Games" Rest in peace John Clarke
4 "Drop the Dead Donkey" or better yet "Yes Minister"
5 "Made in Canada"

In no particular order

1. Blackadder
2. Red Dwarf
3. Futurama
4. Dr.Who (not a hardcore fan, I prefer new rebooted seasons with Peter Capaldi's Doctor being favorite, but Clara being easily least favorite companion)
5. IT Crowd

It's not easy to pick only 5 though, with so many good shows around. These are the first that popped into my mind, I'm sure I could tweak the list with a bit of thought put into it :)

Really a lot tougher than I first thought. This is in no particular order (although the first season of Stranger Things would be tough to beat for me).

Stranger Things
Breaking Bad
Blake Seven
Father Ted
Dr Who

But there are so many more that are close as well.

I've got to join you there on Stranger Things. That is some awesome story telling right there and easily at the top of my list. Doctor Who would have been on the top of my list but the series, to me, kind of flopped about midway through Matt Smith's final season. I've had a hard time watching it since then ... though I'm hoping the new producers coming aboard next season can breath some new life into the series.

My list:

Stranger Things
Battlestar Galactica (reboot)
Star Trek (TOS and TNG)
Babylon 5
MST3K

Stranger Things is astounding isn't it, considering the age of a lot of the cast the acting is absolutely out of this world (roll on Halloween for season two).

Oh and do try the current series of Dr Who. I really like Capaldi as an actor but I thought last season was poor and 100% agree on the Matt Smith seasons. I'm not sure if it's the new companion or if Capaldi's finally nailed the character but the last few episodes have been getting back on form and really work well.

These are strong lists, i have to agree with the quality of stranger things, but i have never seen Babylon 5 or Farscape, i have seen all the Star Trek's and Stargates, but never Babylon 5 or Farscape. I might have to find make a start on them at some point.

There's a few shows you lot mentioned that I've not seen, but I agree with all the ones that I have. There are so many I'd like to add to this list, but I'll stick to the rules <grin>

Father Ted
Firefly
The Twilight Zone
Fawlty Towers
Monty Python

I'm going to fall into 'show's I'd like to see come back'

1) Horizon from the 1970s. Sensible science people with awful ties talking science to whom they assumed to be an intelligent and interested audience. No celebrities, no dumb rubbish.
2) Equinox. The Channel 4 version of Horizon
3) QED (see above)
4) Edge of Darkness - nuclear conspiracy thriller with Bob Peck. Mini series.
5) Day of the Triffids - John Duttine version

Yes, I am old.

Yes, I am old.

If you had said the Howard Keel version then I would agree that you were old. ;)

As for me since finding ED I don't watch TV. :)

1. The Day Today
2. Band of Brothers
3. Cheers
4. Futurama
5. Blackadder

I never thought of band of brothers, i should have said full tv series instead, because BoB was a TV mini series, it's definitely the best mini series though.

In no particular order:

1. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
2. Breaking Bad
3. The Expanse
4. The X-Files
5. The Twilight Zone (1959-1964)

The Expanse may make my top 5 one day, it's a contender with The 100 and some of the other shows i mentioned, only seen season 1 of the expanse but i'm loving it.

Going by sci-fi tv shows:

1) Star Trek, TOS
2) X-Files
3) Twilight Zone (1960's)
4) Babylon 5
5) Terminator: Sarah Conner Chronicles
...

6) Westworld (2016-)
7) Space: 1999 , season 1(1970s)
8) Dark Matter (2015-)
9) Star Trek: TNG
10) Battlestar Galactica (1970s)
11) Six Million Dollar Man (1970s)
12) Star Trek: DS9
13) UFO (1970s)

I have seen Survivors (1970s) in recent years, but thinking about it afterwards, it's so darn depressing. I really don't know much about the rest of the british shows, Dr. Who, Farscape etc. so someday if I catch up on them..

Oh go on then..

1) Only Fools and Horses
2) Father Ted
3) Firefly
4) Game of Thrones
5) Breaking Bad

But there are so many more...

The Horizons of nowadays does seem to be a little on the Philomena Cunk side. "I'm a famous Celebrity and I'm going to explain to you why this boring subject is important to me, and so join me as I go on a journey of discovery..."

The best Horizons ever has to be "The Pleasure of Finding Things Out" with everyone's favourite physisist, Richard Fyneman.

"Connections" with James Burke was also a fun documentary series.
